Alexis Arguello vs Sal Torres
Great pic of a real female warrior, Lily Rodriguez. The older sister of kickboxing legend, Benny "The Jet" Urquidez, Lily passed away suddenly last year, at age 59. She was an accomplished martial artist, who went from kick boxing to become an early pioneer in female boxing. Last week, the WBHOF honored Lily Rodriguez at our first ever "Women In Boxing" luncheon. Also honored were Jackie Kallen & the greatest female boxer ever, Lucia Rijker, who ended Lily's career with a first round KO.kikibalt wrote:

I was surprised watching that fight how things turned out when he fought Gaby Canizales.
I wonder wether Ritchie was having trouble making weight going into that fight or what.
He just didnt look right.
Gaby hit him with alot of big shots.
Of course he collapsed afterwards.
Thank God he came through that.

Lilly Rodriguez was inducted into the "California Boxing Hall of Fame" a few years back, as was her brother Blinky.
Thanks Rick for correcting me on that, I knew there was a brother some where in there, Benny is the one I heard more about.Rick Farris wrote:Frank-kikibalt wrote:Rick,

Blinky was Lily's husband. He was Benny's brother-in-law. Today, William "Blinky" Rodriguez, is a gang mediator in the San Fernanado Valley. He and Lilly, had an 18-year-old son murdered in a gang drive-by shooting. Much like the son of Bobby Chacon. William met Lily when he was just a teen, they fell in love and married. She was older, and the marriage worked. By the way, in his own right, Blinky was a world class light-heavy kick boxer, he beat the crap out of Bill "Superfoot" Wallace, only to be robbed of a decision.

There was a time when women boxing was a joke, however, true fighters such as Lily Rodriguez and Lucia Rijker, have changed the minds of quite a few, including myself. When they are bad, they are bad, but when they are good, they can be great. All they ask is a chance.
I'm for giving anybody a chance who has the courage to get in the ring and fight.

Richie was dead at the weight by the time he fought a fired-up Canizales, and Padilla messed up when he didn't stop it after the third knockdown (he didn't have to under the rules but Richie was finished). The bantamweight division was hot in the 80's. Canizales, who fought like a mini-Duran, held the title just a couple of months.kikibalt wrote:Pug,Expug wrote:Sandoval was a real nice fighter.kikibalt wrote:

I always thought that Richie was the better fighter of the two Sandoval brothers, I do believe he had trouble making 118, his long time trainer Tony Cerda aways had his fighters fighting 8-10 lbs below what they should have been fighting.
The sad thing is that Richie only Received 17k for the Canizales fight.
Richie's brother Albert "Superfly" is been inducted into the CBHOF in June,
it will be the first time in 20 years that I have seeen them.
