Anyone watched the HBO version of Hopkins/Calzaghe?

Post by Mensa07 »

I've got a theory the HBO broadcast was pro-Joe and has led to the majority of American fans also believing Joe won clearly. While the Sultana broadcast was less pro-Joe, and has led to a lot more (the majority?) UK fans seeing either a much, much closer fight or as I did a Hopkins win.

I BET you all those flurries, where to my eyes Joe missed a lot, were shouted up and scored as clean punches by the HBO commentary and also on Ledermans card.

I'm intrigued to watch it anyway just to see if the impression I get coming away from the fight is still the same as it was watching it on Setanta. Has anyone seen it, is there much anti-Hopkins / pro-Joe from Kellerman & co ?

I have seen the Setanta broadcast 5 times and JC always wins - by 2 - 3 rounds.

I watched it on Setanta and thought Joe won. But it was a really ugly fight.

I've seen the HBO one and it's very unlively (so when Hopkins knocked him down, for example, it kind of didn't mean anything), and pro-Joe. More pro-Joe than the Setanta, and the Setanta was pro-Joe. They just weren't calling the clean sneak shots Hopkins was landing.

Well, Hopkins has screwed up some HBO big investments. Trinidad, DLH etc. HBO show his fights but aren't in love with him. Also, the Yanks dislike the negativity of it all.

It's nothing new for HBO to be like that. Check out Taylor v Spinks (the most unprofessional commentary I've ever witnessed) and Pavlik v Taylor II (why they allowed Steward to commentate is beyond me).

It's a shame, as I prefer getting the HBO versions of fights than the Setanta versions. But if they are pro Joe on it, like people have said, I won't bother.

I don't get why the American commentators are so monotone. Why don't they hire people who get excited about boxing?

Why do you think they keep Kellerman and Lederman. They suck at everything else other than shouting.

I hardly bother listening to the commentary anymore, the only commentator worth listening to is Jim Watt as the rest of them just babble on about nothing and seem to talk just for the sake of it.

Lederman sounds like Dom Jolly when he answers his big phone.

I didn't know how to spell it so I Googled, hoping for a correction. I wasn't given one. No need to call me a clown. :(

Dosnt matter what channel we watch it on. The people that matter(judges) watch it live. If we judge a fight through the comentators eyes then we dont really watch the fight then do we.
