australian heavyweight title. has no value!
australian heavyweight title. has no value!
who wants it???? who wants to fight for it???? no one. no challengers. its a fuckin disgrace. old time fighters would turn in their graves. the top 5 wont fight eachother. they all chase shadows for $$.
the australian heavyweight title has become meaningless. i think kali holds it. if he dies before me, perhaps i can steal it from round his waist.. cause no one will challenge him for it!!!! he'll die with it on!!!!

I have written about this before. Once a fighter wins a regional title he has to relinquish the national title. In the past Jimmy Carruthers held the Australian, Empire and World Bantamweight belts at the same time. Similarly, when Lionel Rose defended his World Bantamweight title against Alan Rudkin he claimed Rudkin's Empire title.
Now if you hold a higher title you cannot hold your national title. It is ridiculous.

What have the truly local (not Kali) heavies to be afraid of? Apart from Mark and Solo, who may be looking for bigger fish, I don't understand a reluctance to fight. I would even like those two to get it the top end mix. It also needs to be bourne in mind that there are only 10-15 guys in the whole division who would be known to most of us. It would be good to see the ones who are there mix it up a little.ra2006 wrote:Big Bob does still hold it. I am presuming that he will have to make a defence by October.
But agreed. I think it is disgraceful when the top 5 are not facing off to eachother.

We have a similar situation here in Canada. The highest rated contender, Frenchie Bergeron, is taking it easy with his career and shows no interest in the national title. Of course, he's a Queebecker so our national title means little to him anyway. The present title holder is Ray Olubowale aka "Mount Kilimanjaro" whose record stands at 5-2-1. National titles have lost their value in the sea of alphabet soup "world" titles and "junior intercontinental" belts.
So will Bergeron now challenge Santa Claus, sorry, Patrice Heureux for the Quebec title?Cap wrote:We have a similar situation here in Canada. When I was boxing most pro boxers and footballers had other jobs. Many were garbagemen. Don't laugh. At the time I speak of, garbagemen ran long distances alongside the truck, picked up bins weighting anything up to 50 pounds and lifted them to empty them into the truck. This way you got roadwork and weightlifting and got paid for it. Firefighters have a fitness regimen they have to keep up. It could mesh well with boxing.
I used to do the same thing for a while doing kerbside paper collection. Excellent for fitness.Brute wrote:When I was boxing most pro boxers and footballers had other jobs. Many were garbagemen. I was a binman for awhile and that is one tough job! How they did it in the days before the wheelie bin is a mystery. First month, I could not get out of bed in the morning because my body would seized up!Brute wrote:When I was boxing most pro boxers and footballers had other jobs. Many were garbagemen. Don't laugh. Re: australian heavyweight title. has no value!
Just noticed that Nathan Briggs came in at 231.5 pounds for his fight last night against Fitzgerald. That was his lightest in a long time. Could the "Nasty Boy" be getting serious at last?
Re: australian heavyweight title. has no value!
dont you mean against Kirby? He won by UD as well. I see the Browns also both won on a different card (promoted by their old man).
But lets be honest, Nathan's ship sailed a long time ago. He was only 4 pounds heavier for is fight against Leapai, and we know how that went. I hope he does get serious, for his sake. But even being serious, he will now no long amount to anything more than a gatekepper to the better aussie fighters. Not that thats a bad thing.

I think Briggs is a good fighter, he might be fragile under pressure but he has good fast hands
and a decent dig. Kirby is a tough guy - I think Australian heavyweight boxing is in good shape.
You have a fair few heavyweight fighters in your rating system and they get to fight each other.
Wilson and Big Bob will be hanging them up soon I suppose and Kali Meehan will be fighting more
in the states and Europe.
De Mori has beaten Ed Mahone and for someone with 14 fights thats a good result, and you have the
likes of Pechey, Tomlinson, Kirby, Hoppa etc who can make for decent small hall fights in the future. I think
the heavyweight division in Australia is pretty healthy.
Will Pitt, Radzic and Behan turn over?

Re: australian heavyweight title. has no value!
You seem to know the Aussie heavyweights pretty well for a bloke whose location says South Korea!?!
Re: australian heavyweight title. has no value!
I doubt that there would be many heavyweights in South Korea. Do they show Fox fights over there?
Re: australian heavyweight title. has no value!
According to Boxrec the top heavy in South Korea is Yong Sung Kim, who is 37 years old, 5'9" tall, has won 6 of 11 fights and started out in 1988 as a lightweight.
Maybe we don't have that much of a problem as we think.
I had better get off this subject before some Australian promoter decides to get Yong out here to fight Hopoate.

I am English and am going back to Korea in a few weeks but I do keep abreast of the Australian
scene and know it quite well.
It is suprising how many Aussie heavyweight fights you get to see on youtube
I'm really impressed
with Leapai - he is a solid block of a man who can go places. I think there is a decent strength in depth as
regards heavyweights and I think it will just get better or lets put it this way - I hope it does.
Anyway - here is the best amateur prospect in Australia though he is getting on a bit!
