Yep you got that one in one - my personal opinion is that it will be Punch Promotions.
I am far from sold on these fighter-run promotional outfits to be honest - they serve their purpose whilst the fighter is active (giving the draw card fighter a bigger slice of the pie) but how many last after the figure head fighter's retirement date?

Lennox had Lion Promotions, Naz had Prince Promotions, Klitschkos have K2, Roy Jones has Square Ring Inc - how many of these have gone on to become successful promtional outfits with interests above and beyond their figurehead fighter?

Golden Boy is the exception that proves the rule in my eyes.

Will Punch Promotions extend much beyond the ring life of Ricky Hatton? I am dubious to say the least.

I would like to see Gavin's career guided by a team with more experience in developing fighers to be honest.

Can I ask a controversial question ?
Who within Punch Promotions holds a Promotor's licence ?
Isn't this precisely why Dennis Hobson got involved ?
Isn't this why they can only do joint promotions ?

Hello Mr Beagle,

Now I am not so sure about this - you have to have a licence for so long or put on certain types of shows or something like that to put on World titles - theres some sort of funny rule like that.

I remember another promoter having a similar type of problem in the early days.

Perhaps Boxing Tw*t can help us on that one.

Short clips of Frankie on the pads and some mock sparring with an unfit looking reporter:

Didn't I read something about Hatton himself going for a licence? I could be way off...

Either that, or he wont actually be staging any shows himself perhaps? Won't he 'employ' a promoter to stage the event, (or really the undercard), as with Naz-Hearn and Audley-Harding?

Exactly - until Hatton has the ticks in the boxes for the various rules on putting on a world championship show and title fights - we will see "In association with".

Why would a boxer sign for any Promotional outfit, that does not hold a Promotors licence and always has to stage a show "in conjunction with" another firm ?
Why not just sign for the other firm in the first place ??!!
Why give an outfit a share of your hard earned purse for doing ....... fornicate all ?
This is why I asked the "controversial" question in the first place.
Naz rented Barry Hearn's licence.
Hitman rented Hobson's licence.
Precisely why no boxer ever signed to Naz's firm - other than Naz himself.
Precisely why no boxer should ever sign to Hitman's firm - other than Ricky himself.

Can you actually have two promotional firms of the same name legally? or is there some kind of copyright thing (kind of like there is with certain bands)... there is a small US outfit called Punch Promotions.... just wandering if there could be a potential legal dispute if they go it alone?

I thought it obvious - the promotional outfit has to do all the work - but by joint promoter you can take half or even more without the worry of the backroom jobs and in addition putting the undercard together.

There are loads of reasons why a boxer will do it the Lennox, Naz, Hatton and soon to be Haye way!!!

This is one boxer in my opinion who'll be a bust as a pro.

He has a really good amateur style and he might do allright
in the domestic scene but when he steps up in class as a pro
he'll get devoured - simple as that.

I'm really not convinced about Frankie Gavin as a pro though he
may win the gold medal in a few months time - hasn't got it to
become a world champion as a professional fighter.

It's not about having the mental strength or anything, it's more of a style thing. If that's what you mean, then I agree with you. I think his style is too one dimensional - like a lot of British fighters.

No - Its purely a style thing, his style for me isn't conclusive to being a successful pro - personally I think all these promoters throwing money at Gavin to turn pro are mad GF!

And another one as well - David Price won't even get a British title (if he turns pro that is) - as soon as he fights a puncher he'll get knocked out! :TU:

Now I admit that I am biased in my views - just check my location for starters..

That said I dont think Frankie is gonna be another Peter Richardson.

Yes, I agree that his style has been perfectly honed for the amateur point scoring system, but you cant become world champ on a whim by flapping your arms and hoping for the best. He is world champ because of his natural ability and hard work/dedication to the sport.

I have watched Gavin spar up close and his subtle skills are amongst the very best I have ever seen. He is that good.

Frankie is huge for the weight, he just an amazing boxing brain, perfect judgement of distance and timing, great speed of hand and a really effective southpaw stance to boot.

Whilst I wouldnt say he is a shoe in as a future pro world champ, I would say that with the right coach, right team behind him and time to adjust to the pro code he will sell tickets, win fights and dazzle with his skill.

I aint ruling out a world title either - just depends on how well he can adapt to the pros.

C'mon Frankie - bring home the Gold from Beijing and show the doubters what you are all about! :TU:

I know what you mean though - you dont look at Frankie's style/build and think - "get this kid out of the vest and he is gonna tear it up, Nigel Benn style"

I think he will need time to adapt and adjust to pro boxing - but as far as innate boxing ability and a 'boxing brain' go, the kid has just got it in spades.

Here's hoping I am right anyway!

Spud - re my earlier post, I think you've misunderstood what I was saying.
If Gavin signs for Punch Promotions, and then only fights on bills "in association with" he will have two Promotors to pay out of his purse.
If "in asociation with" is Golden Boy, and they are interested, why not just sign for them, and only pay one Promotor out of his purse ?
My post was aimed at boxers signing FOR a Promotional Company, such as Gavin, not boxers BECOMING a Promotional Company, like Hatton et al.
I'm not daft enough to think any boxer no matter at what level, doesn't have the need for a Promotor !

I have it on good authority that Hatton Snr and Hatton Jnr have successfully applied for, and obtained a Promotors licence.
Can anyone confirm this ?

It's way too early to outright condemn him as a failure, and completely unfair I feel. But we are seeing these days, a lot of English fighters being unable to mix it at a high level of boxing. I personally think it's down to the current amateur sport not preparing our youngsters well enough for the pro game. David Haye and Carl Froch both had professional styles in the amateurs and managed to win things. Our current top amateurs have 100% amateur styles, and that usually means their chin is out to dry. Amir Khan is the most obvious example. He however, has great physical athleticism to help him.

I don't, Gavin is fighting at the highest level as an amateur and has forged a style which will do him no good over 12 rounds against a bombs away Mexican in the pro ranks.

The lad is being hyped as a future great - which I don't think he is - Khan has good power and you could see why he was going to do well as a pro - Gavin doesn't have that power- I don't see this guy making any big waves as a pro.

How many really good amateurs do we have to see crash and burn as pros before we realise that the two sports are very different and what works in one code does not work in another - case in point is Big Aud! :TU:
