Moses lost in the Trinidad qualifier to Argentine Diego Chaves 12-2. I think it's good they give two places to countries that otherwise never will have an olympic boxer. I wonder though what makes these boxers more deserving than others from small nations who didn't qualify.

Sorry, didn't see your second comment. I see we ask the same question. Why do these guys beat others to it? I guess it's a lottery. They look for small countries with no chance of qualifying and just pick one boxer. But sure there must have been someone who did better in losing?

I think countries send in applications for the spots. I think they just felt that these countries boxing federations could use the encouragement. Last time they went to Iran and Afghanistan, so its nice to see some chances for small countries that are not currently war-torn.

Shiba has been around a while.

What would be wrong with Afghan born Arash Usmanee of Canada, he fought hard at the Worlds and lost in his qualifiying bout by 1 point to # 5 ranked Yakup Kilic of Turkey. He was flat in Trinidad and was unfortunatly on the tough side of the draw in Guatemala, this kid has had nothing but bad luck!

I knew it would be a long shot but i was thinking christopher downs could have gotten one of them. Since last time the selections were an Iraqi and Afghani, him being a war vet., i thought he would have n outside shot at it. I knew it wouldnt come about but it was wishful thinking

I understand the idea of given 2 places to countries who wouldn't qualify a boxer through the usual channel, but there must be a way to pick two guys who at least won one fight at the qualifiers

Not a lot of those in the Americas, but there must be several in Europe Asia and Africa.

Why?
You must represent a country, not be an independent. Cuba has already filled those weight classes. Besides, word is that Lara escaped last week and is in Mexico.

I heard the same about Lara. I also heard Rigondeaux was going to escape (again) but got cold feet at the last minute (again).

In 1980, the Olympics received a lot of independent participants in Moscow... easier for Lara if he is in Mexico now

What is easier? Professional boxing or independent Beijing representation? I'd assume he wouldn't be fit or sharp for the latter.

The whole point of these invitations is too keep up the tradition of the olympic games being a global event. If they invited Lara and Rigondeux then they would just have another pair of Cubans, thus defeating the whole purpose of the selection.

Possibly due to the boycott? They needed to fill up spots?

Btw Moses actully has lived in Canada since age 6 and only has 10 FIGHTS!!! His biggest accomplishment is making it to the semis of the Ringside Novice World Championships in 2005.
