I think countries send in applications for the spots. I think they just felt that these countries boxing federations could use the encouragement. Last time they went to Iran and Afghanistan, so its nice to see some chances for small countries that are not currently war-torn.
Shiba has been around a while.

You must represent a country, not be an independent. Cuba has already filled those weight classes. Besides, word is that Lara escaped last week and is in Mexico.

I heard the same about Lara. I also heard Rigondeaux was going to escape (again) but got cold feet at the last minute (again).JMac wrote:Why?Venceremos wrote:in this olympic wildcard invitation they must have invited Cubans Guillermo Rigondeaux and Erislandi Lara as independent participants...

In 1980, the Olympics received a lot of independent participants in Moscow... easier for Lara if he is in Mexico nowJMac wrote:Why?Venceremos wrote:in this olympic wildcard invitation they must have invited Cubans Guillermo Rigondeaux and Erislandi Lara as independent participants...

What is easier? Professional boxing or independent Beijing representation? I'd assume he wouldn't be fit or sharp for the latter.Venceremos wrote:In 1980, the Olympics received a lot of independent participants in Moscow... easier for Lara if he is in Mexico nowJMac wrote:Why?Venceremos wrote:in this olympic wildcard invitation they must have invited Cubans Guillermo Rigondeaux and Erislandi Lara as independent participants...

Re: 2 Olympic Invitations
Btw Moses actully has lived in Canada since age 6 and only has 10 FIGHTS!!! His biggest accomplishment is making it to the semis of the Ringside Novice World Championships in 2005.
