Styles make fights and I think this one will be a cracker.
I think a peak Calzaghe would old man him out of it, a bit like Kessler, and prob school him a bit.
Fighting now it will be close but I still think JC would be too clever for him
I'd pick Kessler to beat Pavlik as well

I know I'm a Calzaghe fan so you guys might take this the wrong way but Pavlik's come forward and relying on his strength style Is made for Joe.

He does thrive on come forward pressure fighters.

Taylor In the rematch found him very easy to outjab as well.

Kelly needs guys to stand In front on him In a trading match.

And joes tendancy to be a charlie big boll*cks is made for pavliks right hand. One things for sure, if Pavlik rocks joe its unlikely he'll be let off the hook. I'd love to see it, but as a calzaghe aid I'd be swerving that one in favour of a vetran send off in Cardiff. Can you imagine, 55,000 brits packed in to the millenium stadium for Calzaghes swansong only for the ghost to spoil the party!

Mind you, with regards to this fight, I don't think anyone thought that anyway. I hope Pavlik takes on Abraham before he leaves 160, because I see that as a decent fight. Abraham has the same attributes as Lockett (Punch, chin), but they're proven at a higher level. He's also better at the fundamentals. It'd be great to see Pavlik fight the other dangerous 160lb'er before he steps up (if that's his intention)

I'll also go on record now and say that if Pavlik is one of the 2 fights Calzaghe has left (if he plans on that many), I expect Calzaghe to win. Not in a Lacyesque blow-out, but certainly by similar margins to the Kessler fight.
I'm not sure the current version of Calzaghe beats Pavlik. Joe's in decline, Pavlik's in the ascendancy and the right hand Joe's always been susceptible to could be a deciding factor in the fight. He might not get up as quickly as he did from BHop's right. Anyway, I'd prefer Kelly to stay at 160 for some time and fight Abraham, as you mention. Joe can bow out against someone else on the seniors tour (RJ, Tarver or Johnson). I've lost a bit of interest in Calzaghe.
Very dodgy fight for Joe taking on Pavlik. Your suggestions for who Joe should fight next sound about right, but Tarver would be a difficult one IMO. Yes Pavlik should fight Abraham before moving up to SMW, one heck of a fight that would be. I remember Abraham fighting on with a broken jaw, very tough fighter. How about Pavlik v Kessler sometime next year.

I could see the result of this one as soon as the fight was announced. Lockett is good at his level, which definately isnt World class. Pavlik, although he shows certain weaknesses in defense is going to be a tough nut for anyone to crack. You had to feel for Lockett, he was out of his depth and getting hurt badly. For a fighter who doesnt love the sport, I think its going to be hard for Lockett to come back from this one. Pavlik on the other hand cant go wrong. The fans love him and he will have huge success. A two weight champion at least.

Pavlik v Kessler would be a great one for next year, Waylon. In the meantime, Pavlik cleans up at 160 and beats Abraham - which won't be easy. Abraham fought on and beat Miranda with a broken jaw and their re-match is coming up soon at a catchweight, I think, of 166. Another good one for the future would be Pavlik v Froch, if Carl establishes himself at world class. Two big bangers who come to fight.

I was embarrassed for Lockett to be honest. Outclassed in every single department there not one positive aspect to take from this.

It was like a grown man against a 9 year old. Pavlik is good but not as good as Lockett made him look.

I think people are mistaken in thinking Lockett was so bad, for me it was a case of Pavlik being so good. He's very underrated as a technical boxer and his jab controlled the fight, the range, set up that booming right hand of his and he even used it as a defensive deterrent when Lockett tried to come forward. I also think his body shots played a bigger part then what he was given credit for, the first Lockett knockdown was more to do with that big right hand to the body then the head shots Gary was taking.
Pavlik also looked massive compared to Gary. Kelly previous opponents Jermaine Taylor and Edison Miranda were middleweights who were really super-middleweights where Lockett was a former light-middleweight. So Pavlik's size was even more of an advantage.
So this does make me wonder how effective Pavlik would be if he goes up in the divisions and challenges bigger and heavier type of opponents. When he fought Taylor at 166lbs his power didn't look effective as it did at 160lbs. But if he stays at 160lbs I would imagine he has the beating of any middleweight that is put in front of him.
Chris_23 if you reading this then big respect for getting behind your man. At least Gary went out on his shield.

Pavlik was aloud to control the fight at range, I don't remember Lockett making one attempt to get inside of Pavlik. Standing in perfect range of Pavlik (also meaning Kelly could easily step back away from his shots) was suicide. He must have known it was futile once he landed a big shot on Pavlik, saw no reaction, and was met by about 4 shots coming back with interest that he was unable to get out of the way of.

Pavlik showed a great array of punches and that he'll keep punching til you fall down but Lockett was a perfect opponent to look good against. Gary had obviously never felt power like it and whilst i'm all for Brits trying to prove themselves against the best, they still need to somewhat prove their worth.

I really like Pavlik's style & attitude and i think he's on the cusp of being a huge star so i really don't want him to be derailed by an about-to-retire Calzaghe. I have no doubt that the Joe that beat Kessler also finds a way to beat Pavlik too after a very similar tough time of it early. I think the perfect route is to leave Joe to fight RJJ and Pavlik to take a final MW fight against AA then moving up against the likes of Froch & Kessler.
I think Pavlik v either of those would be can't miss events.

Fcuk Off Teddy you Bell End!! Lockett came up short at Eite World level, but to abuse him like that is uncalled for IMO. There are plenty of fights at British/Euro level for Lockett that at the very worst he'd be competitive in. He's got a win over Ryan Rhodes the current British Champion FFS

It's posts like that that give boxing forums a bad name....even worse name

Teddy is being harsh. Lockett's face was getting pummeled by every shot. He admitted he couldn't see the shots coming. Just because Pavlik can sometimes look a tad slow or one dimensional, doesn't mean he isn't an absolute killer.

Pavlik is an improving fighter. He's proven something new, in each of his last 4 or 5 fights pre Lockett.

Gary is potentially as good as guys like Zertuche. However, because of how his career was developed, he didn't learn how to truly look after himself in there and didn't last very long at all.

I don't know if Lockett was "trying to look hard", but I do think he looked incredibly nervous whilst Pavlik seemed very relax during the announcements. I thought Pavlik would win in about five with Lockett maybe having one or two moments before going down. I've seen worse one sided world title fights, Naseem Hamed v Said Lawal for example. Does no-one think Gary made a bit of an effort to throw punches back at the start of the third round before he went down for the final time?

Lockett gave it his best shot I suppose, he didn't lose his nerve, but he never had a chance did he. I was hoping he'd put on a better show than that, but it was a horrible mismatch in the end, leaving me wondering why the hell I got up at 2am to watch it!

At least we saw the birth of a superstar - Juan M Lopez looks an awesome talent. Less fights that Kev Mitchell, but can you imagine what he'd do to him? X rated.

He should of made an effort from the start not when it was nearly over.

he did okay for the first 30 odd seconds, then pavlik realsied he was quicker, in range sooner, hit harder and was an all round better fighter. From that point on the ebating commenced and I dont think any ammount of "effort" couldve stopped it. Gary kept getting up I suppose, but how easy is it to sit at home and whinge, would love to see how some of you guys would react when in the ring with a p4p puncher knowing after 60 seconds there was no chance of you winning, carry on for another 7 minutes would you?

British, C/Wealth and Euro titles are the way forward for Gary if he wants to continue in the sport. McDermott, Duddy, Elcock, Barker, Smigga, Macklin, Matvienko etc.

I can only imagine how horrible the beating would have been if it was Duddy in there like it was supposed to be.

He wouldn't have taken a knee like Gary did. He'd have just stood there and got mangled.
