Lol, Joe would easily beat Pavlik, but he Is more deserving than Jones, who fought a washed up Welterweight recently. Is better to fight someone fresh and who's a champ at least.
Wants paydays to retire on now and apparently Pavlik Isn't a big draw yet.

So in Enzo's opinion Pavlik isnt as deserving as Roy Jones?
Well i agree, ask the paying public who they would rather see, Calzaghe vs Jones or Pavlik and 90% will go for the guy they have head of, Jones
Once again we get another pointless thread from some tiresome prole unable to understand the world away from internet forums
Pavlik has knocked out Miranda, Taylor, decisioned Taylor and smashed Lockett - all on live British television. People know about him. He's the Yanks brightest hope at present, and we're not talking about another Jeff Lacy. He's proven himself against guys better than Robin Reid and Syd Vanderpool.
Jones, meanwhile, though once a great, has beaten fornicate all recently and done it on a mainly non-TV, casino stage. Trinidad was a seniors tour 'megafight', while Hanshaw and Ajamu were watched by those in attendance and few else. Jones has been irrelevent as a top force since Tarver sparked him in 04'. Jones would have been a bigger name opponent if Calzaghe had taken a chance and fought him in 2001. Nowadays, a win over Jones means even less than beating Hopkins, Lacy and Kessler.
Also, what's the opinion of the paying public got to do with whether a fighter is deserving of a shot or not? What sort of fucked up logic is that? Is Joe Bugner more deserving of a shot at the heavyweight title because people know him? I also think you screwed up your percentages. 90% would rather see Jones/Calzaghe than Pavlik/Calzaghe? Dream on. Maybe in 2001 they would, but not now. British boxing's supposed to be on a bit of a resurgence, isn't it? We're seeing more US fights on TV now than we were during Jones' prime, and people are aware of how good Pavlik is because his fights are shown. We've even got the Gary Lockett revenge line for the Welsh fans who don't give a damn who Joe fights.
Pavlik headlines against Gary fooking Lockett for Christ's sake, live on HBO! He's not important? He's not a draw? Bullshit.

Because they are the people buying the tickets or PPV....... Boxing promotion lives in the real world and not this fantasy world of internet forums. Why try and market to the whinging old women here and not to the 57 million other people in the UK?forcefraser wrote:
Utter shite. Why ask 90% of the paying public anything???? Why not ask boxing fans??? Ask any boxing fan worth his salt which fight they would rather see Calzaghe v Pavlik or Calzaghe v 40 year old Roy past his prime Jones. Only a fool would opt for the Jones fight.
What? you mean like the bunch of whinging cretins that post on here?Ask any boxing fan worth his salt
Maybe so, maybe not, but thats hardly the pointPavlik, Froch, Abraham and Bute would all be much tougher and more dangerous fights for Calzaghe than Jones.
You are aware that Calzaghe is a professional boxer right, he does this for money, thats the reason he isnt wearing a vest in thereCalzaghe is purely after a big pay day against a one time legend. He admits himself that it is about the money. I can tell you now that a Calzaghe v Jones fight would be a 12 round point affair with no one coming close to a knockout. I dont`t think any of the other 4 mentioned above would go the distance. Therein lies the difference.
Dreadful post, utterly dreadful

OK, ill explain it to you again
Calzaghe, a professional prize fighter, will be fighting Jones because that fight will net him the most money, then he will retire with all his faculties intact and live a long and happy life.
You can bang on all day about who has beaten who and who said what but the facts are Joe is going after the biggest money fight he can get and then retire
got that?
Re: More Enzo Calzaghe bollocks (Pavlik/Calzaghe)
KG, statistically over the last 12, 18 or 24 months Kelly has sold more PPV buys than RJJ. RJJ has appeared on one HBO PPV (against Trinidad. It did really badly). Pavlik v Taylor 2 did more buys (I believe a respectable 350,000). I think Pavlik v Taylor 1 wasn't PPV. So to say it's about PPV isn't correct.
As I mentioned in a previous thread. Joe stated in his autobiography, published in 2006, that "RJJ is a has-been fighter". Now suddenly he's worthy. I'll probably go, but only to see RJJ in probably his last major fight to say I've seen him fight. Pavlik is the linear middleweight champion of the world and probably in the top 10 P4P list of most journalists. RJJ isn't even in the top 30 and doesn't hold a world title and is at least 6 years past his best.
I don't have too much of a problem Joe facing RJJ, provided Team Calzaghe are honest and credit Kelly as a genuine threat. But what Enzo's stated in the press release/interview is pure cod shite.

KG won't get all that. He seems to miss the point about relevence and PPV buys. Pavlik has proven he's a big draw, both in terms of selling tickets and PPV buys. He's active, interesting and the best in his weight class. Jones is none of these. He also hasn't done big PPV numbers for yonks. The Trinidad fight was a disaster - as expected. He's never been a big ticket seller, either. Great fighter, sure, but let's stop pretending he's Mike Tyson. The general sporting public don't know a Roy Jones from a Kelly Pavlik and it's as simple as that. At least Pavlik is being shown nowadays, though - at least he's in the spotlight, front over of Ring mag, and the kind of guy you can show highlight reels from 2007 rather than 1997.Emerson Poncey Name Ghent wrote:KG, statistically over the last 12, 18 or 24 months Kelly has sold more PPV buys than RJJ. Yes the press release is pure crap, but they always are and what fighter has ever said he isnt fighting so and so because he is a genuine threat?
Calzaghe isnt fighting Pavlik, get over it and try and move on with your lives...

Joe will make more money by fighting Jones but his '0' is going to go.
Re: More Enzo Calzaghe bollocks (Pavlik/Calzaghe)
HBO care about one thing; $$$$$. Calzaghe is a HBO fighter. RJJ isn't really. Kelly is. This may have to be shown on Showtime, especially as Greenburgh detests RJJ with a passion because of his antics in the late 90s and early 00s. If so, there won't be anywhere near as much money on the table and, as mentioned above, PPV buys were bad for Trinidad v RJJ.
Tickets for Hopkins v Calzaghe were bad, wasn't sold out and held at T & M Centre so shit money for venue.
Tickets for Pavlik Taylor 1 & 2 were sell outs and the second fight was held at the MGM Grand so great money for venue.
Ticket sales for Trinidad v RJJ were bad. Venue wasn't sold out and held at MSG. Crap money for venue.

I know, people on a boxing forum discussing a fight they would rather see, what a bunch of losers. I may come on here in the future with the sole purpose of telling everybody they are pointless whingers. But then what would I be coming on here to pointlessly whinge about pointless whingers?Calzaghe isnt fighting Pavlik, get over it and try and move on with your lives...
Re: More Enzo Calzaghe bollocks (Pavlik/Calzaghe)
The Calzaghes are taking the easier option that also rewards them with more money, I suppose I can see their logic, but to say Pavlik is undeserving is utter drivel (I don't need to list all of JC's past 'deserving' oppo's) when KP's the man at Middleweight and is P4P ranked. Is RJJ even a top 5 Light Heavy at the moment?? RJJ is certainly not anywhere near the P4P rankings.
Enzo can try and justify the fight anyway he wants, it's clear that the 39 y/o RJJ is the easier option of the 2. Clinton Woods was the last person that RJJ stopped nearly 6 years ago and Roys workrate is not there anymore, it makes him the ideal oppo for Joe. Where as Pavlik is a fit, young, exciting BIG punching Middleweight who would come at Joe for the full 12. As I said ealier I can see why JC and Enzo are taking the RJJ option over Pavlik, but don't expect a pat on the back from the fans for it. JC wants to ensure that he retires undefeated and that IMO is why he's choosing a very faded RJJ over the young sensation

Re: More Enzo Calzaghe bollocks (Pavlik/Calzaghe)
Welly welly welly welly welly wely well!!
I think the only suprise here is that people are in the slightest bit suprised by the decision, Joe and his career all over.
Let him retire with his 0 in tact, the way fights are being made these fighters are not scared to lose, big matches are being made, the undefeated record is meaning less and less.
Joe is a sad relic of an era which saw Boxing become more and more marginalised, lets move on the new era, it should be enthralling.

Re: More Enzo Calzaghe bollocks (Pavlik/Calzaghe)
Joe has only beat one elite fighter for me in their prime - Mikkel Kessler.
Re: More Enzo Calzaghe bollocks (Pavlik/Calzaghe)
Yep, and I do think Kessler has a way to go to prove himself elite. Kessler was in no P4P top ten list when they fought.Dioufy wrote:Joe has only beat one elite fighter for me in their prime - Mikkel Kessler.
I do think he is the goods though, I would expect him to destroy Froch.
Re: More Enzo Calzaghe bollocks (Pavlik/Calzaghe)
I would as well, and I would give him a chance v Pavlik too.
Re: More Enzo Calzaghe bollocks (Pavlik/Calzaghe)
Whats this only beat one elite fighter in his prime horseshit coming from.
Out of the current crop of fighters only Pac, MAB and Morales have beaten more than 1 fighter in their prime.
Using the same logic you apply to JC:
De La Hoya - beat Quartey (not elite) Vargas (not elite)
Hopkins - beat no-one (in his weight class) you would class as elite.
I can go on and on
JC has fought bums (as have many others), however he has beaten a number of very credible challengers which many people view as ordinary using that wonderful thing called hindsight.
Lacy, Hopkins, Kessler, Reid, Woodhall, Brewer, Mitchell and Eubank all very good wins.
People at least try (even through gritted teeth) to provide a balanced argument.
PS. For the record Joe should fight Pavlik rather than Jones - however on the same token should not be ridiculed for not doing so especially at this stage of his career

Joe Calzaghe has been massive favourite in all his fights aprt for Lacy, and he was evens for that - he's done great but come on mate, it's not like his took on the best available.
Re: More Enzo Calzaghe bollocks (Pavlik/Calzaghe)
So who did he not fight.
Ottke - you would have said 'light puncher' no chance bla bla bla
Beyer - glass jaw
Mundine - do me a favour.
In and around his weight he has in the main fought the best guys available amongst admittedly some awful fighters.
Listen, do you honestly think anyone else has sat down compliled a list of top 10 fighters and fought them all - bullshit
Take off the I hate JC specs

PS. Why do most respected magazines and websites have JC as top 3/4 pfp??????

Re: More Enzo Calzaghe bollocks (Pavlik/Calzaghe)
Smoke and mirrors. Lacy was a hot prospect and a good win. Kessler was undefeated, in his prime and Joe's biggest win. Hopkins was a good opponent, but shit performance. Reid was beaten by Malinga, then Calzaghe decides to fight him. Mitchell was beaten by Ottke, then Calzaghe decides to fight him. Brewer was sparked by Echols, then Calzaghe decides to fight him. Woodhall was beaten by Beyer, then Calzaghe decides to fight him. It's the story of Joe's career unfortunately. It's as though Joe didn't realise that those 20-odd WBO title defences meant f-all until only a couple of years ago when he beat Lacy. Since then, it's been great. Lacy, Kessler and Hopkins is a good run (forget Manfredo, a final homage to his WBO title days) but still doesn't compare with the greats.Wrists wrote:

I don't hate Calzaghe - I have never cheered so loud before when Michael Buffer said "And from the wonderful town of Newbridge, Wales", so your assumption is wrong. I however feel that Joe should've unified a lot of fights before Lacy and then should've moved up. And could you imagine Calzaghe v Jones Junior in 2004/5 - fornicate me, talk about special.
Re: More Enzo Calzaghe bollocks (Pavlik/Calzaghe)
Greats as in Hagler, hearns etc etc - no your right
The next level below definitely.
Makes me laugh that out three best guys, Calzaghe, hatton and Khan get such a slating on here.
Yet we positively get all vexed over Froch, Witter, Murray etc etc
Sad british trait
