Mayweather interview

Post by tonyevs »

Not sure if everybody here has read this.
Mayweather interview

I hope he does stay retired - maybe other present and future greats will take a leaf from him and do the same. Why work so hard for the money if you can`t enjoy it? its fantastic if he really has generated 1billion dollars by the end of the year :o

On the racism by HBO - typical Mayweather.
Why is it that the race-card gets played when the truth is that the boxers style doesn`t excite like their white/hispanic/asian counterparts .. Witter played the same thing recently :(

Don't act like there is no race card to be played. It's a lot more covert than you might realise.

Ask yourself one question: Is racism obsolete in the entertainment business and sport of boxing? If the answer is no, then don't criticise Mayweather for using the race card.

Sad, pathetic, what an ass!!!

HBO were in love with Taylor before Pavlik destroyed him and will be in the future, Miranda was lauded also...its like an Ali G 'is it cos I iz black' scetch...no Floyd, your style doesnt interest the man on the street, Pavlik puts bums on seats.

Mayweather could have a stinkfest when the opponent accepted the defeat so didnt push the issue, we respect that quality but im sick of the race card being used by anyone who thinks they havnt got the 'respect' they deserve

Oh, and isnt 'money' Mayweather rich thanks to HBO's millions?? If he thought they were racist then leave, its not like hes in the cottonfields is it??

yeah pure nonsense.

HBO put him on a big contract virtually right from the beginning.

he was earning millions a fight way back at the start of his title reign.

i've got quite a few floyd fights with HBO commentary and he gets praised.

george foreman is virtually creaming his pants during the corrales fight.

I always find it strange when people say "playing the race card" its like a blanket statement that excuses all racism

I once read a article from 1959 where the columnist said "Dr King Jr continued to play the race card today at a rally in Dallas"

As a consequence, when ever i see someone write "playing the race card" i immediately think "your a horrible bigot"

so there we go.

Bingo mate.

It's a typically British thing. Don't like things to be talked about in the open as if it doesn't exist.

I think there is a bit of race in boxing but not as much as floyd makes out. Its a simple fact though that a White champion will sell allot of tickets because they are few and far to come by. Look at Pavlik, Gatti, Hatton, Wlad, Vitali - all massive sellers in a very short space of time. Hopkins, Mayweather, Winky Wright took a long time to breakthrough to the big time and Hopkins especially was pretty exciting before he hit 35+, Mayweather was much more exciting before he left 140. At 147 he was just too small to be able to get away with exciting (exchanging). How many of Mayweathers fights were dull affairs though? Baldomir, Castillo 2 and Delahoya were the worst but aside from those most had quite a high excitement level.

Exciting fighters usually sell well regardless of race and these days most black fighters value defense and not being hit more than the top white fighters and this may lose some.

Gatti was entertaining, but so are allot of British title bouts in the same journeymen style. Mitchell-Johansen, Gomez-Johanson, Gomez-Arthur - all amazing fights, drifts off on a tangent, I wonder if Khan-Murray will be as good

Personally I love watching Mayweather fight but many prefer British title fight level brawls.

Obviously im not from the 'hood' so I could be a little confused but last I checked this wasnt 1959 America and as Hitman said, Mayweather hasnt been desciminated against(wont bother to repeat his educated points)

I do agree that racism still exists but our Arab friends are the brunt of that now...but thats leaving the topic in hand.

What racism has Mayweather suffered????????????

Aside from not getting recognition at 130lbs and only getting a $1million a fight 'slave contract' not much.

I suppose hes just bitter he doesn't get the same appreciation that sluggers get.

I love how people who are not involved in boxing in any way have such strong opinions that there isn't so much racism as some say....

Thats like me saying the Nicaraguan coffee bean price crisis isn't quite as bad as its made out to be (Actually, I have no fornicating idea, but i do like to have opinions)

What a totally ignorant statement .. what racism exactly brings you to this statement?
The point is that some people - for whatever reason they do not recieve what they think they deserve pull the `because i`m black/asian/welsh/woman/gay or whatever insecurity they may harbour .. when reality is they just aren`t what they think.

It's the chip on the shoulder routine which everyone (no matter what race) plays when they think everyone owes them something.

Mayweather is an excellent fighter who I have enjoyed watching especially when he was at 130lbs but he's just not as exciting as Pacquiao, Morales, Barrera, Gatti, Pavlik etc.

For a dislikeable guy who doesn't endear himself to the (less privileged) public and a guy who is not that exciting, mayweather has done very well. People don't warm to 'Money' because he is a prick not because he is black.

The most successful boxers of th e80s and 90s were all black.

Okay then. But do you think HBO have been racist in their treatment of Mayweather Jr? When, and in what way?

I think there are two polar opposites going on here - most people would accept that racism still exists in the entertainment business and boxing (albeit to a lesser degree than in the past). However, that doesn't mean that everyone who uses the 'race card' is justified in doing so. In fact you could argue the opposite in that those who use the 'race card' indiscriminantly actually damage those who have valid claims regarding racism, as it creates a 'boy who cried wolf' situation.
As far as Mayweather's concerned I find it hard to believe that he's been detrimentally affected by racism given the money he's made from the sport and the way the networks were happy for him to select opponents at certain points in his career.
However, I think there are fighters out there who will undoubtedly have experienced racism - and while white fighters undoubtedly seem to be lauded disproportionally I think it's only right to point out that not all of those who experience racism will be black. I would imagine there are Latino and Asian fighters with similar stories.
I think it's probably worth stating that a lot of it is down to money rather than overt racism - simply put, some fighters are easier to market than others. For example, there are now a wealth of reasonably talented Eastern Europeans throughout the professional game, but they're very difficult to market to a Western audience bar the likes of Klitschko.
I also don't recall Chavez ever earning what the likes of Mayweather have earned and I'm sure that was in part due to choices like not learning English, not being based in the States etc. Was that racism or economics?

A billionaire by the end of the year? I don't even think Floyd will become a billionaire at any stage during his life, even with all the so-called shrewd investments he's made.

Tiger Woods receives something ridiculous like £100,000,000 per year from Nike. Woods is the only sports personality billionaire. Financially, Floyd is not in the same league as Woods.

On retirement, I know its selfish, but I want to see Floyd box more. He's only 31 & because he has trained for so long now, he's a young 31. He's always kept himself in condition. I think Floyd saying he was going to earn $50,000,000 for De La Hoya 2 is an exaggeration. I reckon if he was offered that, he would not turn that figure down. I mean, if Floyd was offered $50,000,000, WTF was Oscar going to make from the rematch because there's no way any current fighter gets parity over Oscar?

On the o0ther side, I admire Floyd for walking away (if its permanent) when he's at his peak. He stated he wants to have all his faculties about him, watch his children grow up, live his life, etc. This is good & although a lot of us fans always want to see more & more great fighters carry on, retiring at the top of your game is a great way to leave boxing.

The £1billion claim was the most interesting 1. If you look at all his purchases (plane/houses etc) it adds up to around £100million, yet he probably 'only made' £100million in the ring (or far less). So he either hasnt been paying his taxes or hes made some unbelievable investments (and the stock market plummeted this year). If he hasnt been paying his taxes expect him back in the ring in the next 2 years but if he has made £1billion (I doubt it) would he really want to put in gruelling 12 round war against Cotto for a 1/50th of his fortune?
