just how embarrassing, ashamed and disgusted with
yourself you can feel.

I dread to imagine what the HW champion of the
world would feel when he was beaten in the first
round, with all that pressure.

Often walking to the ring is one of the hardest things
a fighter can do.....after losing inside 1 at such a high
level being seen is much worse.....so wearing a disguise
is no disgrace...I wish i had a good enough disguise in
the past.

But the fights I cited are the fights most people judge his career by...And the historical context in which they occurred is accurate...

I agree. It's also hard to get up for an old Patterson when you nearly shutout a younger version. The only fight where he really looked in really great shape in '72 was the Quarry rematch. And plus he did well enough in '72 to be named Fighter of the Year, going 6-0. But it caught up to him with Norton, and he had to get himself back into really great shape to win the rematch. Then he had probably his best year in '74.

I remember watching Ali-Quarry Two on the Wide World Of Sports as a kid...Ali showed a lot of compassion to Quarry in that fight when he beckoned the ref to stop the fight with one hand as he hit him with the other hand on the ropes... My friends and I used to imitate him to the point of writing boxing related poetry to one another a la Ali in typing class...

I remember when he fought Mathis he weighed 227 which was a lot for him then... SI said it looked like "two blimps meeting in the ring"

That's why I take umbrage when granberry say Remick or Hauser or Mailer informed my views...I lived in that era...
