Barrea leaves GBP.
Barrera, Golden Boy split!
After a successful five year relationship, Golden Boy Promotions and former world champion Marco Antonio Barrera have amicably agreed to end their association with each other with Barrera having been released from his promotional contract and agreeing to give up his position as a partner in Golden Boy Promotions. "Marco is ready to move in new direction with respect to his boxing career," said Golden Boy President Oscar de la Hoya. "We respect him and want to honor his decision to make a change. We wish him the best of luck and look forward to the prospects of working with him again in the future." Barrera stated, "While I have a great respect for Oscar de la Hoya and Golden Boy Promotions, I have decided that I wanted to take a new path with respect to my boxing career. I am pleased that we will move forward as friends."

Re: Barrea leaves GBP.
Anyone know anything about him turning down Alex Arthur recently?
Anway, Barrera leaving GBP may have been on the cards a while. He wasn't happy with the scoring of the JMM fight.
I think Fernando Montiel and (possibly) Jhonny Gonzalez left GBP unhappy about how their careers were being handled.

Re: Barrea leaves GBP.
He has retired, but they all say that.
I was reading that the deal to fight Arthur was very close, and Barrera was coming out of retirement to take the fight. He was going to come over to Scotland for it too.
Surprise surprise it fell through.
I wonder if it will be back on the cards now he is a free agent.

i think he's changed his mind on it.jackthehat wrote:i thought Barrera had retired???????
i was disappointed with his effort against pac.
i know pac is difficult to fight and packs a punch.
but he still let himself down with his effort i thought. :(

He wanted to fight the winner of JMM and Casa. Although that may have fallen through now.hitman_hatton1 wrote:i think he's changed his mind on it.jackthehat wrote:i thought Barrera had retired???????

Re: Barrea leaves GBP.
I don't think this has anything to do with him fighting - more to do with him being a partner in the business.
His departure means there's a vacancy - now I wonder who might get that ............

Re: Barrea leaves GBP.
Why the hell would he fight Alex Arthur?
Re: Barrea leaves GBP.
I hope he comes out of retirement and gets to fight the winner of JMM and Casamayor. The lightweight class then would be a spectacle to see. Casamayor, pacquiao, guzman, juan diaz, jmm,......so many possible great match-ups. Morales may even think of coming out of retirement too. Great for boxing.
Re: Barrea leaves GBP.
Last I hear Morales was coming out of retirement.
Re: Barrea leaves GBP.
Humberto Soto as well.cardy wrote:I hope he comes out of retirement and gets to fight the winner of JMM and Casamayor. The lightweight class then would be a spectacle to see. I can't remember why the Valero fight didn't come off. It possibly had something to do with Valero only being licensed to fight in Texas.
Re: Barrea leaves GBP.
Easy fight for Pacman. Guzman handled him well so Manny should.
Re: Barrea leaves GBP.
I don't think the Guzman fight was a true reflection of Soto's qualities. Guzman just had that horrid defensive style that some fighters can't handle. Even Alexis Arguello could get outslicked, once by a guy who wasn't supposed to be in the same league.
Soto is naturally bigger than Pac, better schooled, and a naturally bigger man. Should be a tough one for Manny & I'm hoping there is an upset.
However, if Manny drops the WBC super feather belt, I think Soto will fight Lorenzo again, this time for the WBC belt outright.
I think Soto can grow naturally into lightweight - I hope the big fight happens - and maybe become another Castillo, ie hard hitting, well schooled, tall pressure fighter and WBC champ.

Re: Barrea leaves GBP.
I don't think Soto is definately fighting Pacquaio - just technically he would be LAST year... note the date.
Pacquiao is moving up to Lightweight - Soto is going to win the WBC Super Feather title.

There are recent articles about it. I just did a quick Google search to get one. Obviously I got an old one.stujones wrote:I don't think Soto is definately fighting Pacquaio - just technically he would be LAST year... note the date.

I don't think they need someone to leave to create one of their 'positions'....twenty six wrote:I don't think this has anything to do with him fighting - more to do with him being a partner in the business.

They dole out bullshit 'partnerships' left, right and centre in their various 'companies' - Golden Boy East, West, blah, blah....
I suppose you think your mate Haye is in with a shout? Next stop Golden Boy London....
Their strategy won't work in boxing. It's not a sport that boasts many sucessful partnerships is it. Ego's will always get in the way. Everyone has their own needs, opinions and agendas.

Re: Barrea leaves GBP.
First of all Haye is not my mate.
Secondly, you're way off the mark in my opinion.
Patrners have to be capital investors - not everyone can create the level of investment required.
This is not a partnership in any of the subsidiary Companies, it's in the controlling Company.
Even big boys like Golden Boy need capital injection from time to time - maybe Berrera wouldn't write the cheque out !

I can tell you one thing: Golden Boy does not need Barrera's money! It's all an ego thing that partnership bull...
Barrera, Mosley, Hopkins, Schaefer and of course ODLH.... To name just some.
That many egos... never going to gel. There will be fall outs galore.
Next stop: Oscar and Pete Buckley go into partnership - Golden Boy Birmingham.
Oscar: 'This is a very exciting time for us. We are going to place an emphasis on developing and attracting a new breed of journeymen. With Peter's expertise we cannot go wrong."

What axe is it you have to grind, Maelstrom ?
I neither love nor am I acquainted with Haymaker.
The new Promotion Company hasn't even put a show on yet - so how could anyone judge it ?
This thread has nothing to do with Haymaker - stick to the subject.

Re: Barrea leaves GBP.
Haye's promises are getting a bit boring. Don't know who he's fighting, don't know if those 2 amateur kids he "signed" are actually going pro. Obviously takes a lot of sorting out, but listening to all this bragging is getting a bit boring. We want to see him announce an opponent, so we can start looking forward to something. Haye's attitude was great through the Macc build up/fight/post fight, but let's see the next stage happen.
What was this thread about, again?

End of August an announcement will be made, 'Barn. We're almost there.

I know, I just want something to happen though. Haye can talk like that when we know what's happening & it'll be more exciting.
I think Wlad v Thompson may have put me in a deep depression.

The first two shows are shaping up nicely.
