Lets hope this is another example of FW, Amir, his family et al choosing a good up and coming trainer (rather than an established one) who they believe can take Amir to the next level. Until we see his next few fights we won't know much more, but it should be interesting to hear the changes Khan thinks he is making in style and how he puts them into practice (or doesn't) in the ring.

It obviously has escaped your attention, but Khan has already left a good up and coming trainer, over what was allegedly nothing to do with training technique.

I'm not bothered about what you have 'allegedly' heard about why he left, all I was saying is he's now left Harrison (FACT). He needs to find another trainer (FACT) and his new trainer should be judged on Amir's performance in his next few fights rather than the shit that people were writing earlier in this post i.e. he'll fight like an amateur being trained by a Cuban who guided Kindelan!!

Jorge Rubio was never an official Trainer for Gamboa. Gamboa just went to Rubio's gym every once in a while for fight preparations. Gamboa trains at a few different Gyms under a few different Trainers, but he likes Rubio's gym a lot. From what I understand, Gamboa always got good sparring at Rubio's gym and says he's learned a LOT from Jorge. Not to mention, Gamboa pays his sparring partners VERY well. Something like $45-$60 Per Round. From what I remember though, Jorge never actually cornered Gamboa in a fight. I could be wrong though. Jorge is definitely doing something right because Gamboa is a repeat customer and has plans of coming back in the future.

Jorge was going to have one of his best fighters fly over from America to help Amir train & spar but Amir's camp was being pretty cheap about it. Jorge's fighter was willing to cover his own Plane Ticket and Passport, but the offer from Khan's camp was ridiculous. They weren't even willing to Pay $500 a week. The fighter had an offer to fight on a televised ESPN Bout in a few weeks and he turned it down for what looks like now probably nothing.

Which may be a good thing considering that Gamboa is coming in for the same type of criticisms as Amir since turning pro i.e. poor defence, low hands, getting put down.

During one of the Olympics, might of been 1996, but most likely the one in 2000. Jorge was sent to Mexico to train Mexican Fighters to help prepare for the Olympics. While he was in Mexico, he basically examined the situation, and found a way to sneak into America after he finished up his business in Mexico. When he got into America, he obviously got picked up pretty fast, he got expedited (Is that the word I'm looking for?) to Miami and he was allowed to stay. When a Cuban touches American Soil they pretty much all the time are allowed to stay. He's been in America for anywhere between 8-12 Years now, so no he did not have anything to do with that fixed Khan Kindelan Finale. I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure Jorge was training Kindelan in the earlier to middle stages of Kindelan's Career. He was history by the 2004 Olympics. One fun little fact about Jorge is that he has over 180 Amateur Fights himself, all in Cuba though. He never fought outside his homeland.


Now he's doing great. He owns his own gym in Miami, he has 4 Up and Coming top notch prospects that train under him full time, along with many many other fighters who train under him full time, he also has fighters who pass in every once in a while like Yuriorkis Gamboa, Richard Abril, Joey Hernandez, Juan Arroyo (Only recently), etc..


Jorge working with Khan is obviously the biggest step up in Jorge's History as a Coach, but it's not like he has nothing else going for him if for some reason it doesn't work out with Khan. Although I think it will work out just fine. Jorge is one of the best in the game. He's great at teaching just about everything, just look at what Khan said in that YouTube Video put up a couple posts in front of me. From Hand Speed to Hand Wrapping, the guy's the real deal. He's not one of these come and go Cuban Amateur Coaches, he's been in the game a VERY long time. And it's not like he has no experience with Pro's, the past 3-4 Years that's been his main focus. People like Gamboa come and go at his gym though. If you want to see some up and coming success stories that completely rely on Jorge as a coach, go to the BoxRec Fighter Database, and look up these 4 Active names: Antwone Smith, John Jackson, Angelo Santana, & Ricardo Hernandez. A few years from now I know for a fact atleast 3 probably all 4 of these guys will be world champions. For those wondering, right now while Jorge is away with Khan his gym in America is being held down by a few Assistant Coaches & Trainers.

I read an article that says Rubio trains Gamboa, but since then I've seen someone say that Gamboa trains at various gyms, and Rubio's is one of them (which Gamboa really likes training at).

Breidis Prescott just beat Richard Abril on ESPN 2. Richard Abril gets a decent amount of training from Jorge Rubio. (Amir Khan's new trainer.) Although Jorge Rubio wasn't in Richard Abril's Corner for the Abril vs. Prescott fight, Jorge was in Abril's Corner for the fight before this. (Against Marty Robbins.) Jorge Rubio was in Antwone Smith's Corner in the Co-Main Event that night though.

Why was Rubio clapping when Khan was cold clocked?

Anyway, nice info from Ron C in this thread, and with that in mind, I can only assume Rubio thought Prescott was made for Khan.

I'm also thinking that maybe Warren advised differently than taking on Prescott, but was over ruled some what by the Khan camp.

Just a thought.
