Not to sound negative, but this happens every time a new superstar comes along in the 100m. People start raving about him and then the next one comes along. Not saying Bolt is not special, but when he packs it in someone new will come through. Always happens.

of course they will, but its been many many years since a (clean) sprinter was head and shoulders above any other competitor...

Greene was head and shoulders above and didnt test positive but he looked suspicous

Bolt is also a LONG way ahead of the comp, even if the 2 other fastest men of all time ran PBs he'd still be a margin ahead (he probably could have gone 9.60ish), which has never happened before (excluding Ben Johnson)

There is also the possibility that this is a natural athlete

To be fair - I don't think Powell or especially Gay had the greatest preperation for the Olympics. Not saying Bolt isn't still a class apart, but I'm sure we might have had him running it hard all the way through.

Bolt's preparation has hardly been perfect, that was only the 9th competitive 100m he'd ever run. I love the way he eased up, who has ever done that in a 100m final, let alone still break the world record. Also, there wasn't even a following wind, in the perfect conditions, going flat out for the whole distance, who knows what he'll be able to run?

Isn't it weird how boxing people often like track and field too? Even the commentators (John Rawling, Mike Costello). I love it too.

I've been trying to think of a performance that is something like it and the only one I can think of is when Seb Coe ran 1.41.73, basically on his own and setting a record that lasted for more than 15 years.

Bolt could have ran 9.50.

Absolutely incredible. Seems like a really nice, good-humoured fella too.

Agree Ian, it's just such a shame you can hear so many people mentioning steroids with no real basis to do so.

I thought that too, but my mate who is a little more qualified to judge than me, reckons that although he thinks in a couple of years he will be able to - that specific run wouldn't have shaved 0.19 of a second had he run too the line. It might have been a sub 9.6 run, but not much more according to him.

I think its comparable to Johnston's 200 metre world record in terms of margin of win etc... plus when Butch Reynolds got the 400 metre record (if he was clean), a record that I think lasted for 12 years - that was an impressive race. Especially as Butch was WAY down after 200 metres.

I think there is no doubt Bolt is clean

YEs probably another 0.1 off if he ran to the line and dipped, but if he had 2.0 metre tail wind (there was no wind) it would probably be 9.5

Butch tested positive and got banned didnt he???

Yes he did, although I don't think it was for a performing enhancing aid (if memory serves me)... his record stood and this was around the time of the Ben Johnson stuff.

For me that showed we all watched something special, Johnson has won everything, and he was beside himself watching Bolt today, he turned to Jackson and didn't quite know what to say.

As for Bolt being 'clean'? i have no doubt he is, you just don't do that kind of thing if you've cheated. that cheek when 10 metres from the line was just a celebration of talent for me, he's just one of the most talented athletes out there.

made everyone in the world smile watching it, thats special

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=mo6pHs0-3bQ

I think Johnson was as amazed as the rest of the world due to what he had just witnessed.

It was unbelievable.

The only thing I will say about Bolt is that I hope he really tries to smash the 100m record this season and doesn't drag it out for financial gain by breaking it by just a little each time and picking up a large prize at each Grand Prix.

In athletics they often seem to have this one peak season when everything clicks and they literally break WRs for fun - then almost inevitable get an injury, have a spell out and are never quite the same and never hit those amazing heights.

I remember Steve Cram going through this 15 day period when he was breaking everything in sight - never did it again and the injuries came. There are other examples too.

So if Bolt really wants to leave a mark I hope he runs a 100m this season aboslutely flat out to see just how fast he can go at this point in his career.

Yes, I was thinking the same thing Ian, a lot of people on here seem to have knowledge of track and field, I was obsessed with athletics as a youngster, and knew every single runner there was at the olympics and world championships.

I think, like boxing, track and field is for the most part and individual and purist form of sport, a man against the track and his opponents, toiling against the pain of the mind and of the body to overcome distance and time against his fellow man, so really not that dissimilar to the discipline required of boxers. Both are exceptionally brutal and demanding in their own way.

I think Saiid Ouita did something similar to that Ian, they worked out that he would have beaten Seb Coe by 14 meters just 10 years after Coe's world record.

Some of the distance runs by the kenyan steeplechasers were just incredible as well back in the 80's and 90's.

Interesting, and yet a lot of boxing purists disagree that modern boxers are better (than ones from yesteryear) due to evolution in sport. Track and field is the one sport that measures the ability of athletes from now and from yesteryear. Thats a whole different discussion though.

Great run by Bolt, immense.

Well as great an achievement as he has done - Did Phelps win the 100 metre Butterfly?

The most exceptional run by a human ever has to be Florence Griffith-Joyner's 10.49. I mean, it was the equivalent of a man running 9.5 flat. Just think: Marion Jones was a tall, tall woman in the bolt mode, absolutely dominant in woman’s sprinting for years, doped to the eyeballs (and is now in jail for that), yet she couldn't get close. And Flo-jo did this, what, 20 years ago?

The other runner that truly astounds me is Haille Gabresellesse (Sp -- from now on it's HG). He seemed to be able to float across the track. What amazed me, though, is that he would average 63 or 65 seconds or so for 25 laps of the track. I don't know if any of you can remember back to the last term of the school year, when athletics was PE, but 400 meters was always the one to avoid. Did anyone manage to run one single 400 meters in less than 65 seconds? Did even the best in your class manage it? I just can't fathom how HG did it. I really can't. I mean, it’s only 32 seconds per 200, and a porker like me wouldn’t feel bad with a 30 second 200. (I have to pace myself  ).

As an aside, does anyone remember when he was racing against a Kenyan -- maybe Paul Turgat, not sure -- in a World Championship, and they literally sprinted side by side for the last 200 meters in the most incredible finish I've ever seen? I really can't remember, and would love it if somebody could confirm.

If Flo Jo was clean, then I'll beat Bolt next week.

And her 10.49 was windy. It was set at the Yankee trials where it was windy as you like but her run registered as zero wind. Something went wrong.

No-no, Flo-Jo wasn't clean. Clearly. But, if you think about it, even other doped atheletes never came close. People talk about Ben Johnson's Seoul 100 as being startling, like something from a different century, but I believe Flo-Jo's was even more so.

I mean, with all the advances in training, nutrition knowledge, harder tracks, better clothing, and better drugs, they still can't get within a 10th of a second -- a big distance in sprinting.

The thing is, Flo Jo herself never got within a tenth of this that same season, even on other wind assisted runs. That's how windy her 10.49 was. But you're right, it's absolutely mental that Marion Jones, roided to the teeth, couldn't take it down.

Regarding Flo-Jo, I was reading that the wind meter showed zero for the 100m race, but only thirty feet away at the long jump, and at the same time the reading was 4.7.

However, the mark was submitted and ratified.

I think she eventually ended up owning something like 6 or 7 of the womens fastest 100m times.

She was never proven a cheat, and was tested numerous times during 1988, and even went on record inviting to be tested at any time.

Maybe she was just ahead of the game when it came to drug testing.

Think you're on the right lines there James, I've always been hooked on the track events myself, 100m up to 15000...there's something elemental about running and boxing/fighting - go back 30000 years and you no doubt had the local fastest man and the hardest men in the area, known by everyone.
Most of the golds we've been pulling in this year mean bugger all to me, to be honest. Trampoline champion, for instance?!

You wonder when the final 100m record will be broken, I mean it has to stop somewhere. 100m in 5 secs anyone??
