I used to be a sprinter at an athletics club before i moved to London but i've always enjoyed track and field in a similar way to boxing. I had a discussion about this on some other site once. There is an elemental fascination in 'pure' sports which can't be matched by others where equipment is involved. So being the best in weightlifting, running, jumping, swimming and fighting just means more.
When the apocalypse comes and we're back to a caveman existence Phil Taylor's way with the arrows or Tiger Woods ability to chip onto the green aren't going to help them one bit.

Regarding Flo-Jo, I was reading that the wind meter showed zero for the 100m race, but only thirty feet away at the long jump, and at the same time the reading was 4.7.

However, the mark was submitted and ratified.

I think she eventually ended up owning something like 6 or 7 of the womens fastest 100m times.

She was never proven a cheat, and was tested numerous times during 1988, and even went on record inviting to be tested at any time.

Maybe she was just ahead of the game when it came to drug testing.

Wasn't she married to a guy who was convicted of supplying performance enhancing drugs.

Like Johnson, Flo Jo went from a finalist in races, to beating people by 7-8 meters, it was ridiculously obvious she was done up to the nines with steroids.

And her 10.49 was windy. It was set at the Yankee trials where it was windy as you like but her run registered as zero wind. Something went wrong.

No-no, Flo-Jo wasn't clean. Clearly. But, if you think about it, even other doped atheletes never came close. People talk about Ben Johnson's Seoul 100 as being startling, like something from a different century, but I believe Flo-Jo's was even more so.

I mean, with all the advances in training, nutrition knowledge, harder tracks, better clothing, and better drugs, they still can't get within a 10th of a second -- a big distance in sprinting.

flo jo tends to get forgotten nowadays.

I think, like boxing, track and field is for the most part an individual and purist form of sport, a man against the track and his opponents, toiling against the pain of the mind and of the body to overcome distance and time against his fellow man, so really not that dissimilar to the discipline required of boxers. Both are exceptionally brutal and demanding in their own way.

Yes that's exactly it. You could hear a pin drop before some of these Olympic track finals. So many pairs of eyes watching an individual about to try and perform at their best. That is serious pressure on one pair of shoulders.

I was actually equalled 6years later and broken in Berlin 20years later. Sounds impressive but Owens only knocked .1 off a secon off the old record and there was a little matter of a world war going on and the fact you needed to break the record then by a whole .1 of a second, now you can shave .01 off the record to break it.
