Jack Johnson Trivia

Post by Ric »

Who was the first person former heavyweight champion Jack Johnson fought after winning the title from Tommy Burns?
Clue: it was an exhibition bout in Vancouver, B.C., March 10, 1909 with a boxer later to achieve much fame in another arena.

Actor Victor MacLaglen?
I read somewhere that he fought an exhibition match with Johnson but I don't remember the date and venue.

I think Johnson was killed in the car crash while on his way to the second Louis/Conn fight. I have a touch of doubt though, because it was reported he was speeding, and the fight was ten days away...so what was his hurry?

Nat Fleischer always contended that the fight with McLaglen was a title fight, on the basis that a heavyweight puts his title on the line everytime he steps into the ring, as there's no way he can engage in over the weight matches. Fleischer still listed some heavyweight matches as exhibtions, though, but said the McLaglen one was not advertised as such.

he had a car race match against Barney Oldfield. I don't know if he had any more than this one, but I guess it counts.

Barney Oldfield and Jack Johnson

Post by joneva »

Funny thing is Barney Oldfield and Jack Johnson were born within a couple of months of each other in 1878 and died within a fw months of each other in 1946.

I think he had a mixed match...boxer vs wrestler in spain, but I don't know the details...I'm sure if he had entered wrestling even for a brief time it would be well known,as his career is pretty well documented, and there's never been any mention of it.

Johnson also tried his hand at bull fighting at least once. I don't know if he got paid for that or not, or whether you would call it a sport...

He also boxed a painter named Arthur Craven.

In answer to one of those trivia questions, it was Sam McVea who worked Johnson's corner in the Willard fight. He was also his chief sparring partner and whipping boy.

You read the recent(2005) book The Great White Hopes:The quest to defeat Jack Johnson by G. Kent
There is like an entire chapter about Victor Mclaglen.
More facts then you probably want to know.

Here is a trivia question to the trivia question.
Whom was it that Jack Johnson was originally supposed to fight in the six round exhibition,
before the boxer was mysteriously called back to Seattle and Victor Mclaglen
took his place?
Clue :Jack Johnson boxed this person twice before and seperated him from some of his gold teeth in an earlier encounter in the ring.
