I think Johnson was killed in the car crash while on his way to the second Louis/Conn fight. I have a touch of doubt though, because it was reported he was speeding, and the fight was ten days away...so what was his hurry?
Nat Fleischer always contended that the fight with McLaglen was a title fight, on the basis that a heavyweight puts his title on the line everytime he steps into the ring, as there's no way he can engage in over the weight matches. Fleischer still listed some heavyweight matches as exhibtions, though, but said the McLaglen one was not advertised as such.

Barney Oldfield and Jack Johnson
Funny thing is Barney Oldfield and Jack Johnson were born within a couple of months of each other in 1878 and died within a fw months of each other in 1946.
