If you thow out all the "cheese championship" fights for bogus alphabet titles ...
In matches for the real heavyweight championship, Tyson is 3-2 ...with 3 KOs and 2 KOed by
Mikey wasn't the real champ until he beat Spinks....
He defended sucessfully against Bruno and Williams and then got slobberknocked by Buster Douglas a scant 19 months after Spinks ...

Some Prime

The only other time he fought again for the real title Tyson was pulverized by Lewis ......

Not exactly a legendary championship career ...

Joe Louis on the other hand... 26-1 fighting for the championship

Sorry pal Im not buying it.
If Scmheling can KO A young Prime Louis Then how hard is it for you to invision Tyson doing the same.
If Max was a harder puncher & put them together better Louis wouldnt have lasted to the 12.
Tyson early & thats my final answer.

Actually Max Schmeling was a much better fighter than Buster Douglas who one sidedly whacked MiKe Tyson during his "prime"
Max Schmeling is in the Hall of Fame ...I doubt if Buster will ever make it..

Unlike Louis Mike Tyson never reveresed that embarrassing loss ..
For all we know, Buster could have whipped his ass 20 times in a row...

Plus its certainly valid to compare Louis career accomplishments ,,,
The fact that he had a much better career than Tyson indicates that he is better fighter ...

I'll say it again - to believe Tyson ("prime," whatever the f*** that means - the Tyson fans are constantly changing the definition to suit their latest bogus argument - or otherwise) would've beaten Louis anywhere near his prime, you have to believe that Douglas and Holyfield were better fighters than Louis. And there's no way in hell that's true.

Tyson's career repeatedly demonstrates his bully mentality - when he was in the ring with someone who wasn't afraid and who was a complete fighter who didn't crumble at the first few hard shots, he lost.

Tyson: the most overrated fighter of all time.

I'll second everything Erik the Viking wrote..
Tyson never really showed much ability to handle adversity in the ring . When he fell behind in a fight ,he usually just kept right on taking an ass whipping ...the truly great ones can find a way to gut it out when things arn't really going their way..... Hypothetical matchup Joe Louis would be guaranteed to provide Tyson with some serious adversity right from the outset..

Let's see...Louis on a constant basis would throw eight punches at a time while Mike would throw at most his left to the body followed by an uppercut to the chin combination...

My guess is that Mike wouldn't even have time to create an offense because he would be eating so much leather. Then he would make a last dish effort and round four by wildly swinging for the fences and missing.

That would be all the offense Mike would muster. And Jow would KO him in round five. Mike would be knocked down and not really try to get up.

The Douglas that whupped Tyson would, whup Max!
That Douglas was a one fight great champion.
That performance was one of the greatest I have ever seen.
Now I said it earlier, Louis is the better fighter overall.
But a prime Tyson & a prime Louis is what the thread said & I think Tyson would win this one.
If he could get past the 4th round it would be the better boxer in Louis to prevail by ko himself.
But the Tyson of 86 was awesome regardless what happened after.
Tyson wouldnt let Joe get out of there . He study fights like a student & he knew what to do & did it in those days.
Loius was only a multi punch fighter when he got rolling or hurt his opponent.
Other wise he shuffled & followed his rivals around & took unnecessary punches & that would be fatal against a lightning fast puncher like Tyson was. in 86

How can ANYONE reasonably say Louis was a "very slow starter"? That's ridiculous! Louis had many blow-outs of top guys. He had first-round knockouts of top guys like Max Schmeling, Tami Maurelio, and Buddy Baer. He was definitely not a slow starter. Louis and Tyson were similar fighters. Tyson had a better chin, but Louis had the advantage in several key areas. Louis had a height and reach advantage with that ram-rod jab, and could use it to pick Tyson apart. Louis had much more heart and toughness than Tyson, who has fallen apart mentally at nearly every serious test. Louis had superior stamina to Tyson, who has never had the stamina to fight hard all the way through twelve rounds, let alone fifteen. I think Louis might have to come back from some shaky moments early, but he would gradually and clinically break Tyson down for a knockout around rounds seven through nine.

rockyjoe...you've got it nailed. you have tyson staying longer than i would but your points are all perfectly made. SLOW STARTER!!!!right...and jake lamotta had a glass jaw.

one addition. joe could turn that terrific left jab of his into a left hook in midflight and a murderous left hook it was.

better fighter in every category.
