U.S. Championships - June 2009
U.S. Championships - June 2009
The U.S. Championships will be held in Denver, CO and the tournament is tentatively scheduled for June 2009.
Re: U.S. Championships - June 2009
well i'll be there 141 open...............i'm in the semi's of the ny metro i won my quaterfinal match saturday
Re: U.S. Championships - June 2009
Metro has one huge tournament for juniors, novice and open that takes several months to complete. They have to have it done prior to the NY Golden Gloves, which takes another 3 or 4 months to complete.
Re: U.S. Championships - June 2009
They have a few boxers so it takes a little while.
Re: U.S. Championships - June 2009
I'll be there myself also in the 141 division open
Re: U.S. Championships - June 2009
Does anybody have any inside info on what week in June it will be? 8)
Re: U.S. Championships - June 2009
Jamal James?..............I actually beat the kid you fought in the finals of platinum gloves
Re: U.S. Championships - June 2009
I haven't heard anything yet. I'm hoping that they put it in the second half of the month. They do need to coordinate it with the National Junior Olympic tournament. They could hold both tournaments at the same time, but if not then they need to make sure they don't conflict. They really need to have enough time for the LBC and Regional tournaments to be conducted after the National Golden Gloves are completed. I guess that could be done by the end of May, but there wouldn't be any rest for the boxers before the nationals if they are held in early June.skinnyman wrote:Does anybody have any inside info on what week in June it will be? 8)
I know that hosting 2 tournaments at the same venue can make it difficult, but in some ways it is a blessing. Coaches don't have to choose between conflicting tournaments and they save money by traveling to one locations and having more boxers compete.
Re: U.S. Championships - June 2009
It would have to be two separate tournaments in the same place at the same time. That would mean an approximate total of 500 some boxers. Don't have enough officials for that kind of event; don't have enough computers for electronic scoring.
Re: U.S. Championships - June 2009
No, they could hold the J.O.'s during the day and the US CHP in the evening. I'm sure we can find enough officials.boxmel wrote:It would have to be two separate tournaments in the same place at the same time. That would mean an approximate total of 500 some boxers. I don't mind having the tournaments held on separate dates/locations, but it does make it difficult for some coaches. This is especially true if they are only a week or two apart. Coaches that have limited vacation time can't always do both. Some coaches have enough time, but need at least a few weeks back home in between tournaments.
Re: U.S. Championships - June 2009
Dennis, in both tournaments you have to have double sessions. It would be impossible to box 350 or so Open boxers in 6 days in one session only unless you had double brackets with an "A" and a "B" champion. Same for the JOs - there are generally double sessions through the quarterfinals. Level 2 and above officials are much like coaches in that they have to take time off and mostly pay their own way.No, they could hold the J.O.'s during the day and the US CHP in the evening. Re: U.S. Championships - June 2009
Even more reason for them to host both tournaments together. Officials and coaches only have to miss work for 1 instead of 2 tournaments and only have to pay the expenses once instead of twice.boxmel wrote:Dennis, in both tournaments you have to have double sessions. One session or two does not make a difference in the number of boxers who can compete in a particular weight class in a set number of days. Boxers can only box once a day!!! They have two sessions to cut down on the length of each session. They can have 3 or 4 rings and have 3 sessions if necessary. 11:00 am (lasts until about 1 pm); 3:00 pm (til 5 pm) and a 7:00 pm (til 9 pm). Everyone can get breaks and eat meals. Sounds good to me.
Re: U.S. Championships - June 2009
I think it sounds good to have them both at the same time from a coach's and athlete's standpoint. However it doesn't leave any time for sightseeing in the host city.
Re: U.S. Championships - June 2009
Most coaches wouldn't have more than a handful of boxers. They might have a day or two with nobody boxing or only boxing in the morning or evening session. Should have a little time to see some sights in Denver.

I loved Denver. Really nice city. Probably the cleanest downtown I've ever scene. LoDo (downtown area) was nice, caught a show at Red Rock Ampitheater. . .went to Coors Field and caught a game. Plenty to do around there.Kolya wrote:Dennis wrote:Most coaches wouldn't have more than a handful of boxers. Ok, let me issue my disclaimer here, everyone-I'm from the general Rocky Mountain area. The reason I joke about Denver or Salt Lake City is because everyone in Montana will joke about the surrounding states. I know there's plenty of delightful things to do in Denver and SLC. Well....maybe not SLC, but Denver and CS at least.

March to June 2009 is going to be very busy. The West Michigan Golden Gloves and East Michigan Golden Gloves then the Michigan Golden Gloves in April. The National Golden Gloves in early May. The Michigan Senior Open Tournament in mid May. The Great Lakes Regional Championships and finally the U.S. Championships in June. Wow. It will be very busy. Oh, I forgot, the Michigan Junior Olympics, the Region 5 J.O. tourney and the National Junior Olympics. Yes, busy indeed.
Re: U.S. Championships - June 2009
I heard yesterday that the U.S. Championships, Women's Nationals AND national JOs may all be held at the same time in Denver. Wonder where all the officials and computer techs are coming from, if this is true.
Re: U.S. Championships - June 2009
If true Mel, I wonder how many sessions a day they will have and how many rings. They might also extend the tournament a day or two and stagger the days of competition. It could be a real circus, but it also makes life easier for some coaches.
The one thing I like about it is that I would be able to watch some of the womens and JO bouts. If they are held on different dates and locations, I probably won't go to the Women's Championships or the National J.O. Championships.

Held at the same time - NOT at the same place. Can't interfer with the AIBA testing at the men's championships. If true Mel, I wonder how many sessions a day they will have and how many rings. Re: U.S. Championships - June 2009
Held at the same time, but not the same place? Will they be in the same city, but just different venues? Same venue, but different rooms?
Re: U.S. Championships - June 2009
Since I don't know any concrete details and am just speculating - yes, depending on where in Denver the Championships will be held - I would guess they would try for the same venue, different rooms. I can 99% guarantee they will not put the Womens and JO championships in the same room as the men's becuse of AIBA testing (now, watch then do that!).Held at the same time, but not the same place? Will they be in the same city, but just different venues? Same venue, but different rooms?
