AIBA Youth World Championships - 2008
Re: AIBA Youth World Championships - 2008
Luis Arias just won by RSC in the 2nd round. I don't know what happened in Traon Bynum's bout with the Cuban. I missed it on AIBA's site and they don't have it posted in the results page yet.

Re: AIBA Youth World Championships - 2008
I didn´t see too many bouts yesterday as I had some of my boxers fighting. However I saw two US boxers. 60 kg lost to the cuban, he was strong but got outboxed. The americans are too slow on their feet and get hit too easy against fast movers.
The 69 kg Errol Spence won a hardfought bout against a good colombian. The fight was very close despite the 11-4 score. The american was rocked twice in the last round and looked tired.
The scoring hasn´t been good. They are hardly scoring bodyshots (unless you´re a mexican powerpuncher) and it´s too low in general.

Same crap that happened in Beijing. The system needs to and will go before London 2012.locoxelbox wrote:The scoring hasn´t been good. They are hardly scoring bodyshots and it´s too low in general.

The system needs to go bye-bye before the start of 2009. Hurry up AIBA and implement the new system!JMac wrote:Same crap that happened in Beijing. Re: AIBA Youth World Championships - 2008
Is it the system? Or the people using the system? The computer only does what the user tells it to do. Maybe having the individual score and throwing out the high and low scores will work better.Same crap that happened in Beijing. The system needs to and will go before London 2012.
Re: AIBA Youth World Championships - 2008
It's both the system and the people pushing buttons and if maybe using the individual, with highs and lows tossed out might make it better but I don't like how the "system" has changed the style of boxing. They also need to get rid of the evaluation used to critique the judges. That is a big part of the problem on the international level.boxmel wrote:Is it the system? Or the people using the system? Re: AIBA Youth World Championships - 2008
I agree its both and that the evaluation is at fault too. Let's have individual judges scores and they can be added to get the total score so if they want to keep open scoring they can. I don't think they should, but that is another issue.
The scores should be very high as you could potentially get 5 points for 1 punch that lands. You would also get 1 point if only one judge can see the punch land. The scores should be like 65-50, 110-88, and other high numbers. How does that sound? I'm sure some wouldn't like it.

Yes - it definitely sucks.
Why in the world would you want scores like that? And how would you configure a computer scoring system to differentiate in who sees how many punches in order to assign a points number?
I have a GREAT suggestion. Why don't we just wait and see what AIBA comes up with in its newer, better system. Sigh.

Re: AIBA Youth World Championships - 2008
My system would have each judge being independent and all 5 judges scores being added together for the score shown on the screen. So if the red corner lands a punch and all 5 see it land, then the score goes up by 5 points. An altnernative would be to have each judges score shown separately and then have a total score. It is an idea.
Re: AIBA Youth World Championships - 2008
Joshua Berrelleza lost 5-11 today.
Re: AIBA Youth World Championships - 2008
Roscoe Hill lost 12-15. A good showing, but not quite enough.
Re: AIBA Youth World Championships - 2008
Kevin Rivers lost 11-12 today to a boxer from Belarus.
Re: AIBA Youth World Championships - 2008
Our two big guys won. Nick Kisner defeated the Czech boxer 10-4 and Joey Dawejko defeated the Virgin Islands boxer 16-4. These two could realistically medal.
Re: AIBA Youth World Championships - 2008

This is what I thought at the beginning of the tourney. I stand by that belief. 5 guys left so I would say we will be lucky to get 3, but I'm still hoping for 4 or 5.Dennis wrote:I don't think those are boxing powerhouses so I think Joey has an easy draw. The US boxers that get easy draws need to take advantage of it and come back with medals. Maybe a couple of the guys with tough draws can medal too. 4 or 5 medals would be great. We will probably be lucky to get 3.JMac wrote:ISV is US Virgin Islands
BIH , I 'm not 100% sure but I think it is Bosnia/Herzegovina

Re: AIBA Youth World Championships - 2008
Sorry Dennis but your system would be catastrophic. It's based on competent/non corrupt judges. Here in Mexico one judge has already been left out because he was caught making signs to other judges about the standing of the bout. Yesterday when I was working the corner I could see how the nearest judge was leaning backwards after each potential punch to see if it was scored (there is a small monitor near each corner, so the coaches can see the scoring). The judges highest concern is that they get a good score on the statistics so they can be in the finals, specially those from the eastern bloc countries who bring a lot of presents for other judges/AIBA officials, etc.Dennis wrote:I agree its both and that the evaluation is at fault too. On another note this tournament hasn´t been good to USA. They lost their three first bouts yesterday. At least their two heavy guys later. The cubans haven´t done well either. Already four boxers out of the tournament.

A definite improvement! I remember the days when this didn't happen at all - ever. Here in Mexico one judge has already been left out because he was caught making signs to other judges about the standing of the bout.
Just out of curiosity, locoxelbox, do you see anything that could be done differently with our boxers to make them better with computer scoring at the international level? Does it look like a cloning of our Beijing open boxers? Would be interested in your comments.

That is one of the biggest prolems and the same thing happened in Beijing and every world championship I have been to (9). That is why they need to get rid of the judges evaluation at the same time as the scoring system.
Loco, when you get in the corner, just turn the monitor towards you more so the judge can't see it when he leans back.

Not true. I've seen lots of judges get the boot during world tournaments under Chowdhry. Sometimes they were caught cheating and he wanted to send a message to officials to fear him or he didn't like who they had as a winner in certain bouts.

Guess we, the public, just didn't know about these actions.....???? Or maybe I wasn't as aware of the politics/mechanics as I am now.Not true.
