What is the lowdown on Thanksgiving? We have Christmas and a big turkey then, but no Thanksgiving.
From Wikipedia....
Thanksgiving, also known as Thanksgiving Day, is a harvest festival. Traditionally, it is a time to give thanks for the harvest and express gratitude in general. It is primarily a North American holiday which has generally become a national secular holiday with religious origins.
The dates and whereabouts of the first Thanksgiving celebration are a topic of modest contention. Though the earliest attested Thanksgiving celebration was on September 8, 1565 in what is now Saint Augustine, Florida[1][2], the traditional "first Thanksgiving" is venerated as having occurred at the site of Plymouth Plantation, in 1621.
Today, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the second Monday of October in Canada and on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States. Thanksgiving dinner is held on this day, usually as a gathering of family members.

Bennie, a traditional Thanksgiving dinner consists of a Roasted turkey with stuffing, usually made from corn bread, sausage, spices and a wide variety of ingredients, most housewives have their own family recipe. It is usually served with mashed potatoes, more stuffing, a vegetable side dish such as asparagus, green beens or some greens, candied yams, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie and lots of giblet gravy.
It varies a little depending on where you are in the country. Here in California and the the southwest United States, we have to have tamales with our dinner, and usually some type of salsa or red sauce. In New Orleans they might spice it up as well, and serve some red beans and rice, and their choice of pie is sweet potato and/or pecan. Good stuff. At Roger's house they have a turkey Lasagna smothered in Italian gravy, with side of turkey sausage.
There are some people that prefer a standing rib roast or a baked ham, but most of us save that for Christmas.
The meal is usually preceded by a prayer of thanksgiving for all that has taken place in the last year. As the father and patriarch of my tribe, it's my job, I fumble my way through it. Thanksgiving has it's roots in Judeo-Christian religion but officially it is designated as a secular holiday.
It's my favorite holiday. No expectations, no stress, just family and a good time
Happy Thanksgiving!!
