I retract my statement that says Lawton will outpoint Gethin. I somehow got Lawton and Limmond mixed up. I think Gethin outpoints Lawton, or even stops him late on but I feel he would get beat off Limmond. I am sorry for the confusion, pal.

still a decent fight in my eyes I pick Gethin but can see the argument the other way

I see Gethin as being a bit like Pavlik his punches might not look like all that much 'on the tv' but at ground level or taking them in the face for 8 rounds is a different matter

I've had a look for odds on this fight but can't find any.

Maybe they'll be posted tomorrow.

If anyone can/does find any, I'd appreciate a link, ta.

Big-punching Bloxwich brickie Martin Gethin defends his English lightweight title against classy Stoke man Scott Lawton on the Carl Froch world title bill in Nottingham tonight in a 10-rounder.
Gethin, youngest of three boxing brothers, returns to the city where he scored a huge (domestically) four-round stoppage of Sheffield's previously unbeaten John Fewkes in September to lift the English belt. The 25-year-old Gethin walked into Fewkes and took all the fight out of him with body punches to stretch his unbeaten record to 16 fights (one draw). Gethin really shook up the domestic lightweight scene and a win over the tall, neat-boxing Lawton would get him closer to a mooted shot at Amir Khan.
Lawton has already been in with Khan for the Commonwealth lightweight title and barely threw a punch before Scottish referee Victor Loughlin rescued everyone in the fourth round. That defeat came last year, and in Nottingham, since when the 32-year-old Lawton has reeled off four sharp wins. He will view this as a chance to erase the stigma of his Khan 'showing' and has the skills to build up decent lead against the slow-starting Gethin but lack of power is a real bugbear for Lawton and separates the two. Gethin, once he warms up, wears his opponents down, hurts them. Prior to his stunning win over Fewkes, the Black Country man also despatched Bradford's flashy and dangerous Nadeem Siddique in seven rounds, and Siddique was 22-0 going in.
Gethin is on a roll, gunning for Khan, who also fights tonight in London against Dublin's little-known Oisin Fagan, and punching hard. Khan, incidentally, halted Martin's elder brother, Steve, in three rounds in Glasgow in 2005.
It might be close, but Gethin catches up with Lawton enough to take a decision.

I wouldn't call Gethin "big-punching" even though he stopped Siddique and Fewkes - he wore Siddique down and took him out when he was out of gas and Fewkes' corner pulled him out for not being interested, after he did nothing against Gethin.

Fewkes won the first two rounds very easily too, before he did nothing and was retired. I can only recall Gethin landing a barrage of head-shots toward the end of the third - he didn't get wore down by Gethin, he just got pulled out for not being arsed.

i started doubting gethin, thinking about dioufy's posts :(

Lawton did an excellent, really excellent job defensively IMO. he moved a lot and when gethin cut the distance did a great job of blocking shots. my mate was saying gethin just needed to throw more- possibly true- but i think credit goes to Lawton whose defence was discouraging Gethin from letting his hands go too much.

You're welcome. :D

The cuts rule does need changing but Lawton would have won on points anyway, IMO.

Why is the cut rule not universal for goodness sake. I felt like throwing my kebab at the TV on that one.

Good shout, Ian. I thought Gethin would win with something to spare. What a win for Scott Lawton.

John Fewkes vs Lawton in Stoke or Sheffield would shift some tickets.

Yep, good call. Lawton has upset the form book and is back in the mix again.

That's the thing with boxing, one minute almost everyone's writing you off but one good win and you're back in demand again!

I hope Lawton gets to make a defence his title at the Kings Hall, Stoke. Scott should have buried a few demons since the Khan loss with this win.

Yeah it sounds like Lawton was winning comfortably at the time of the stoppage, so the shit cuts rule didn't effect the result, but the shit cuts rule is....... shit. It's a simple case of using common sense IMO, if the cut had have gone the other way in the fight then Gethin would have been awarded the fight despite being behind which is nonsensical!

Yes, would be a small hall classic, for atmosphere at least. Fewkes needs a sharpener in the new year first.

Lawton deserves a British title shot, or at very least an elim.

While Lawton has already been exposed at domestic title level, this win is deserving of another shot

Good call Ian.

Although that elbow robbed gethin of a late ko.... which certainly didn't look like occuring !

I was at the Khan v Lawton & Gethin v Fewkes fights and that is what i based my judegment on... but in fairness, Gethin had zero spite in him. At times he was smiling at Lawton, when he should have been trying to kick his backside.

Well done Lawton.

I'm sorry I made you doubt Gethin, Counter-Puncher. I just didn't see what most people saw when he beat Siddique and Fewkes. I expected him to come undone, although I expected against higher skilled and ranked fighters than Lawton.

heh, you were proved right though. I find in a lot if fights I can see strong arguments either way, not many where I think absolutely that I am convinced one party will win, and well-thought our arguments on sites like this often give me pause to consider my opinion. often leads to a sterrible fence-sitting habit sadly :-? someone on here made the good point before the fight that as Lawton wasn't going to be out-sped like vs khan (and i would add, outmuscled like vs Thaxton) he would be more confident and able to produce his boxing

like i said though fair play to him he had exactly the right tactics and showed a lot of skill. if you look at the way Gethin moves it's odds-on you'll think about exploiting it and moving a lot yourself.

Martin, I am sure, will be back. many will see Lawton's move and cover tactics as the blueprint to beat him (and also I would add John Murray who's similar), some however will lack the skill or desire to do so, and we'll see him in some good fights.
