..i think this means most impressive to the boxing world and the general public, which at one time weren't as far apart as they are now.

so....corbett beating sullivan should be considered. corbett wasn't given much of a chance against the powerfull sullivan, so in addition to scoring a big upset he ushered in a style of boxing that hadn't been seen before, at least in this division. big front page headlines all across the country.

I don't think that Tyson's KO of Spinks was even his best KO, as Spinks was terrified & offered nothing in return.

--- Lot of latitude in "most impressive performance." Quite a few walk out one punch KOs out there like Rocky Juarez had a few years back.

I look for either massive underdog against top quality or quality to quality which was Tyson/Spinks. Myth about Spink's terror. He throws several 1-2s that are smothered or slipped, however, his first right hand, the Jinx landed on Tyson in the opening seconds. He couldn't keep Tyson off him and the right uppercut straight up the gut that dropped Spinks for the first time in history probably does so to most fighters. That the 2nd right uppercut comes so close to the first KD, perfect timing as Spinks ducks into it and goodnight Irene.

Nobody but Tyson can do that to Spinks who had credentials out the yazoo.

Most recently Pavlik/Popkins. Pop moults out of his shell, steps inside Kelley's power range to give punching angles and out at will a thing of beauty. Best technical performance of his career, age 43, very impressive against top shelf prime champ and I don't care for Popkins a bit. That kind of masterclass, a term much watered down, ain't subjective, it's obvious. Minor technical flaw in lack of power, so watch Manny/Oscar for the improved encore.

Ad Wolgast KO Battling Nelson in a toe to toe Marquez/Vasquez type of battle over 40+ rounds. Wolgast knocking out a block of iron like Nelson so late and looking like a panther doing, top of the mark.

Could a case be made for Louis-Schmeling 2? I certainly think so. Even more so when you think it was USA-Germany, 1938, given the political climate at the time of the two countries. Both guys must have been under immense 0pressure to win.

If ever there was a bout where fighters literally had the weight of their respective countries upon their shoulders I feel this was it!

Louis done the business, plain & simple & avenged an earlier loss to Max!

Corrales-Castillo I is close if Castillo doesn't spit his mouth piece all over the place which leaves room for debate.

I've never thought that the mouthpiece spit tainted the great performance all that much. He lost a point for it. It bought him maybe five seconds. It's still totally unbelievable that he fought back to get the knockout.

One I like to nominate is Leonard-Duran I. Both performances.
It was astonishingly arrogant of the skilled boxer to try to out-macho the renowned brawler, yet he damn near pulled it off. Great slugfest. Duran is pushed quite hard, digs deep, barely pulls out the win.

I can't agree with that assessment. Spinks was a very special fighter at 175 but he has few credentials with the big men which is why he avoided any live fighter in his fights after Holmes. He wanted that pay day and wasn't sure he would be able to take any of the other contenders or belt holders. Tyson did it in style but this was not a live fight...and certainly nowhere near being of the greatest performances in the history of the sport.

There's been alot of impressive fights, but for my money, as far as the most impressive performance I have ever seen on film, may just be the one sided nature of Dempsey-Willard. Never have I seen a fight go down like that, where a champion was so easily destroyed. The only thing that comes close, in my mind, was Julio Cesar Chavez take apart Greg Haugen inside of five rounds, and Haugen was no push over and the reigning champion.
