I gotta go with the great Henry Armtrong...But the great Willie Pep's record could eclipse Henry's...

Can't believe Moore is leading in this poll.
If you know your boxing history it's hard to not put Greb clearly at #1, although I can understand arguments for Armstrong.
Definitely not Marciano.

- Really now, who's "record" is the one most discussed?dempseyfire wrote:Can't believe Moore is leading in this poll.

Rocky hands down, Robby next.
Since greatest not defined, I can make a case for Young Stribling, though I'm kinda partial to Carnera and Langford for personal reasons, and how come no Jimmy Wilde, eh? Is it British or Welsh bias rearing up?
Well, at any rate, welcome to democracy 101 where the monied elite, the highly educated and the unwashed illiterati merge to vote for consensus. Of course, I didn't vote for such a nebulas title when Robby is the consensus best fighter ever. In a logical world it should properly follow that he'd have the greatest record.
At any rate, no flies on the 'ol Mongoose who is another favorite of mine, so what's not to like?
Re: Greatest Record
I sort of like the current reading having voted for Moore. He's a working man's hero....He was the consummate KO artist, but yet experienced the feeling himself. He came back from the grave with Durelle, and his career lasted as long as just about anyone...even managed to keep improving as he seemingly past what should have been his prime. He ducked no one and was ALWAYS competitive. He may well be the last of his kind.
His overall story is pretty compelling
However with that said,Greb, Armstrong and maybe Pep are "the kind" I'm talkin' about. They are all from that material of which I speak.
49 and 0 is great. But I don't see the list of challenges (not to mention challengers) as distinguished.
If you are looking for perfection.....Vinyl is the answer....The 49 and 0 of the upholstery world
If you are searching for elegance in excellence.....I'd choose leather....It's got flaws....and it's been there.....but nothing really beats it.

Re: Greatest Record
Not the greatest, but I think JC Chavez's title fight record is vastly underrated.
Re: Greatest Record
I voted for Moore, toughest era overall excellent busy record - fought everyone, beating most - longevity and most KO's... tough one to beat.

and there are many others yet!

Re: Greatest Record
Greb beat more HOF fighters than Moore, was busier than Moore (and lost less) so I don't see how you can say it was a tougher era. And the fact that he couldn't manage one win over his arch-nemesis, Ezzard Charles (who has a greater record than Moore IMO) . . .I just don't possibly see how he can be #1 or rated over Greb.jimglen wrote:I voted for Moore, toughest era overall excellent busy record - fought everyone, beating most - longevity and most KO's... tough one to beat.

Re: Greatest Record
I am surprised at the results so far. I thought it would be between Langford and Greb with Charles as the number 3.

Re: Greatest Record
Right, and I'm saying the middleweight/light HW/small heavyweight 'division' (all these guys fought each other regardless of weight) of the late teens and early 20s was a deeper era than the middle/light heavyweight division of the 1940s, especially when you look at exactly who Moore and Greb fought. Greb fought more hall of famers and overall a deeper, tougher group and came out better than Moore did.jimglen wrote:toughest era
Re: Greatest Record
archie moores because not many boxers in this modern age is going to have as many fights as he had KO's people who do have that many fights now are usually journey men not LH champ and HW title challenger
Re: Greatest Record
Ezzard Charles. His quality/quantity ratio is one of the highest.
Re: Greatest Record
As mentioned above Charles, Langford and Greb have the best resumes.
Re: Greatest Record
I just have to go with Robinson because of all of the greats he beat.
Re: Greatest Record
Like most things in boxing, being undefeated has more to do with careful matchmaking and timing.
I am still shocked that records like Greb's and Langford's have only 2 votes each.

Re: Greatest Record
I was just going to say, two votes for Greb. One mine, presumably the other from DempseyFire. Frankly, I find that astonishing.
Re: Greatest Record
I voted for Greb also based on the list offered.

It just comes down to only being able to pick one.
