Johnny Nelson should stop fighting and keep talking
I know its been mentioned on here before but Johnny really is an excellent pundit .
On Ringside last night he was knowledgeable and articulate plus really enthusiastic about the upcoming fights .
I was really enjoying hearing him speak and was getting irritated when Derek Williams kept butting in .
Now if we could just persuade him to stop boring us to death with those diabolical 'fights' of his !!!!

you like ottke but not nelson bennie? would have thought there were plenty of similarities in style mate?
good point though he is excellent most of the time, articulate clear and concise even if I dont agree with everything he says.
Poor old derek comes accross as a lovely chap but struggles to get his potin accross at times, in fact the oipposite to Johnny. Still prefer him to pieper though whom I find most negative.

Nelson - says it like it is and adds insight
Williams - states the bleeding obvious, whilst looking vaguely into the middle distance
Piper - says that every upcoming SKY fight (particularly PPV) is the next coming of Hagler-Hearns. Stuck record
I like McGuigan and Watt, though. Dempsey's just doing a job.

I only took up boxing a few months ago (not particularly seriously either) but it's made me appreciate fighters like Nelson more and more in terms of the skill and tactical know-how which is required by their defensive styles. While iIdo agree fights involving defensive boxers can be very fustrating to watch they should be given their due. Nelsons style is what allows him to still be fighting at his age and commentate without slurring his words.

Warren is always pretty smart with Nelson, always ensures there is a decent ticket seller or two on the undercard because he knows Nelson wont sell shit on his own....
people literally start leaving during his fights... he practically cleared York hall the night he fought Vassilev.
luckily on that occasion Martin Power/Peter Haymer and Stev Murray were on the card so it was jam packed all night until the main event.
When he fought Jones in Derby they made sure they had Damon Hague on the undercard to sell tickets
*** dont get me wrong though, as a gentleman and as a boxer he is first class... just boring as hell most of the time

Williams is OK.007 wrote:Derek Williams is a cr@p pundit, never anything decent to say. Agreed Nelson is very good at it I think we'll see him on the sky team once he hangs up his gloves - then he can truly call himself 'the entertainer'.
I would prefer it if he could look at the person he's talking to though.

I have always had the impression that the team really respect Derek Williams, he may not be the best talker but I think he does his research well. Its not often you get the big lads talking about the likes of Kevin Mitchell. I think he is a definate proffesional at his job and he is definately improving as a talker.
I agree with the views, Nelson is a natural talker and I do think he should call it a day now boxing wise - the big fights are not going to come and he might jeopordise his future career if he gets brutally KO'd by a lesser fighter - remember Sky used to use a lot of Crawford Ashley, but after he lost to Klemensten he's really been used in that capacity - same with Thompson after the Sellers defeat.
What ever happend to Sky using Billy Schwer, he announced on a ringside show that he was now a member of the sky team - but he's hardly ever on.

Well this doesn't tell the whole story - I think your refering to when he beat Vassilev at short notice for the WBF heavyweight belt when his fight with??Napoloean Togue or something like that fell through the week of the fight.Chris the fighter wrote:I think that Nelson should be a little grateful to Warren there was a time in the mid 90's when he was fighting obscue heavyweights for the WBF strap.
I think AUldey was turning pro and Nelson thought a pay-day and a fight at heavyweight wouldn't do him in any harm.
He immediatley abidcated from the belt and went back to 190. He fought, and was robbed, against some good heavyweights in his time.
