It's the principle.

Why couldn't Hennessey and Froch have just accepted any deal that was presented to them? Seems really short sighted to me. Giving away the rights for free would have benefited them so much more than this.

If they were to approach ITV and offer them the fight for free now, would ITV even be interested?

Yes, until it came to next time they were negotiating and ITV knew they could get it for free if they just held out.

There's nothing to justify a PPV, Froch although an exciting and hungry fighter who holds a "world" title isn't well known enough to the armchair fan(which is who the vast majority of PPV buyers are) and even Taylor despite being the former middleweight champion is hardly known to the British public. This is a good fight for us boxing fans but Froch and Hennessy are trying to sell this as some kind of "superfight" when it isn't, it just won't appeal to the armchair fans who are more likely to be in bed or go out on the town than pay £15 to watch somebody who they have never heard of.

I'm not talking about armchair fans. I'm talking about the supposed hard core, who have been screaming at the tops of their voices that that WANT this match so much, and that it's a disgrace that it isn't on TV.

Yet, I wondered, how many would be willing to pay? And you answered no.

And here is the problem.

You're not willing to pay, and neither ITV nor Mick Hennessy nor Carl Froch are philanthropists. They’re in boxing to MAKE MONEY, not top provide some altruistic entertainment product to sports fans.

It's dumbfounding to me that there are LOADS of people here willing to have Hennessy and Froch give away his product/work for free, but NOBODY saying "hey, if it's a choice between not seeing it at all or relying on a stream of very questionable quality and stability, and seeing it but paying, I'd be willing to fork out some cash".

That says something on two levels: one, just how much you all REALLY care; and two, on a more profound level, that people just haven't got a clue about life.

THIS, I suppose, is why people want lower taxes AND better public services.

MH would earn more through sponsership by giving away the fight to SKY/Setanta than having it on a stream.
He would struggle to give away food to the starving
This highlights the man's ineptitude.
Froch has been kept waiting all this time, finally got his shot which he won in style and now we are having Junior Witter all over again.
Say what you want about FW but he pays his boys well gets them on tv and also would never be forced into taking such a risky first defence away from home.
A promoter should be there to look after his man

Yes but we've had good sources saying that both ITV and Setanta made offers to Hennessy to show the fight Live and have been turned down by Hennessy as they were not close to the £300,000 he valued the TV Rights.

For ITV its all about how much Advertising revenue a fight like this would generate at 3am in the morning which wouldn't be much and for SETANTA it'd be all about how many New Subscribers they'd gain by showing it. Both companies have obviously done their Budget for what they could afford to spend based on this and made offers to Hennessy.

I just don't see this as a superfight unlike what Hennessy and Froch are making out. Its a good fight but thats about it, Jermain Taylor hardly pulled any tree's up at middleweight and now has 2 losses and no real track record at Supermiddle apart from a faded Lacy!

Setanta subscriptions can now be cancelled by e-mail (used to be postal only).

I wonder if a few mails to the address detailed on this page might see some action?

No his 1st Defence could have been in Nottingham on April 25th against EDISON MIRANDA who was available for that date and looking for a big fight plus wouldn't have cost too much money eaither.

This would be an exciting fight for as long as it lasted and would have done well at 10pm on ITV1.

Agree with that, surely other names too could have come into consideration, such as Jeff Lacy, a man well known to the british public and we could compare what Calzaghe did to him to how Froch performed against the man.

I agree with the first statement here!! Knocking out Miranda would have sent a ruthless message out..I think it's maximum risk and mini reward for Taylor!! :(

@ Carbo, if it was the same price (£9.95) on TV I would pay for it. I'd probably have to hold my nose whilst handing over my details but I would pay. 100%

Maybe Froch will start to feel he has been a little over-eager to get over to America and try and break the American market too soon? We will see after the taylor fight I suppose. It's gone from a brave move into looking like a bit of a daft move in terms of business sense.

I honestly don't see why people would pay that much for what is literally, an internet stream.

I'll try and avoid the results and catch a free "repeat" the next day

When the dust settles and if Froch is WBC champion having spanked Taylor in his own backyard he will be essentially five years ahead of Joe Calzaghe.

He could have signed for allegedly, picked up the vacated WBO belt and been defending it against good earnest nobodies for five years. He'd have been on telly, he'd have earnt well for minimised risks.

But he would never have known how good he was.

Mick H could be said to have failed to deliver the coverage this shot merits but he's delivered Froch, belatedly, a shot at an in-prime household name who is eager to win.

Mandatory granted.

But still. Froch has the chance to have a more meaningful career than Calzaghe which he may not be good enough to do, but he has a chance to try.

Lest we forget - we often didn't see the big-American fights live in the supposed - good old days.

And if in say 1989 we'd been offered the chance to see Benn v Barkley on our computers for the price of 4 pints - about £3.40 back then....we'd have said, "where do I park mi 'overboard'"

Im not a journalist but if he were to attend that fight and then talk about it on setanta or bbc then woulnt that be a journalistic capacity. When hes not working i suspect he gets invited to a lot of shows so he becomes aware of prosepects and things like that.
