I've seen about fifteen of his fights & I've yet to see any tactics employed between the ropes. I know he can be quite effective with that (almost backhanded if you know what I mean) southpaw jab, but when he does try & box in a fight he looks like he's concentrating so hard on punching straight it makes his head stick straight up in the air like a target & his legs are always so far apart he looks like he's about to throw a pelvic thrust rather than a punch.

Not trying to start a flame war, just wondering if there was actual footage of the boy boxing in a bout rather than sparring.
as far as i have seen Valero's boxing skills in-ring are strictly linked to his footwork. if he is on his toes he looks great, if flatfooted he looks, umm well a bit flatfooted, its where the 'awkward clubfighter caveman' type comments come from. as for the jab he looks a lot better when he starts out with it and tries to impose with it to the body before swinging for the fences. basic stuff i know but with the macho image not something he's always done. i fully expect him to box much more when he's matched with people commensurate to his own talent levels.

Apart from the fragile over hyped amir Khan result - can anybody give me another guy Prescott has fought of any significance to base their opinion that Breidis beating Valero?

Valero, it is true, has feasted on easy touches, but has lately stepped up his opposition and still been as effective.

Morales and Barrera have raved Valero .. some praise indeed coming off two such class acts me thinks
Prescott was brought in as an opponent with a misleading record .. by a guy who knew him well and was hoping to build up his new star pupil .. as we know Breidis didn`t read the script :KO:

i dont think he is, i dont rate him below top 20 lightweight, ive only seen him in his last 3 fights and he looked shite, apart from sparking khan

however, there is no denying he can punch, is KO ratio cant be disputed

If we forget about rating him for a second, quite a few people on here believe that he will beat Valero. I think that is overstating his abilities.

i see it as a 50/50 fight because they can both BANG its defo a who lands first fight, and with prescott being the naturally bigger guy there is a good chance he could win

i wouldnt like to have a bet on this fight

Do you still think a recorded KO means the guy was cold-cocked?

no, but it could mean that

generally means they have been dropped and cant contiune, not just pitter patter ref stops fight

how do interpret it, KO's are a lot harder to achieve than tko, thats a fact

No it isn't, all a KO on the record means is that the guy's taken a knee for the count or chosen not to beat the count, the referee's overseeing of which is different between countries. If a guy is knocked out cold it is more likely to be waved off without a count so they can get medical help in...and called a TKO. You generally see more KO's recorded in South America etc because they're more likely to administer a count to someone who doesn't look like they want to beat it.

You can't say a fighter with more KO's on his record always hits harder than one with more TKO's. Even if some punching machine came along who puts all of his opponents to sleep, if the fight is stopped without a count it's a TKO, not a KO.

True, a KO does mean they've been dropped but most KO's result from a fighter consciously staying down for the count (rising at 9 etc to look like they wanted to beat the count, but the ref counting 10) etc rather than being put down hard and visibly being unable to beat the count, in which case it is often waved off without a count.

i take your point re outcold & getting a TKO win (if thats true, and i have no reason to doubt you), but generally a KO win when purely looking at records does give a better indication of their power

like your buddy khan, he has a rediculas amount of stoppage wins but the majority being TKO when the ref jumps in, but he is no puncher (well not like his record indicates), where as Prescott seems to phyiscally stop the majoirty of his oppenants opposed to the ref stopping them

Yes but there are just as many examples of punchers whose opponents stagger up on jelly legs after they are dropped for the ref to wave it off as a TKO, doesn't mean they were dropped any less hard than some guys who would just stay down for the count.

In the case of Breidis Prescott, the 0-5 turkeys he was recording KO's against in Colombia were all cut from the same cloth and were undoubtedly the types who would take a few shots initially and just not want any more, leading them to stay down for a full count. The ref counts in these cases because it was highly likely the first and only knockdown for nearly all of them and so they deserve a count.

This happens a lot with guys recording KO's in some African or South American backwater, and it really doesn't give any sort of indication that Prescott punches harder than Valero.

Sigh, there's still no way you can say that because those KO's were against scrubs who took one shot and then took the full count because they didn't want any more, it has NO BEARING on his power in relation to Valero, I'm sure if Valero fought those same guys in Colombia the proceedings would have gone exactly the same, ie, Valero hits scrub, scrub goes down, says 'F**k this!' takes the full count, and MAGIC... it is recorded as a KO.

God, you can tell I'm bored at work to be arguing this for so long.

we dont know the scrubs Prescott KO'd got hit and decided enough was enough, cause we havent seen his fights

yes, but it's more likely that they weren't.

There are so many fighters, like Prescott, who scored all these recorded KO's in deepest darkest Random Continent against guys for whom fighting wasn't their vocation, and then came to the US or UK, stepped it up and revealed they weren't the beast their record suggested. Hence ol' Breidis failing to put a dent in a guy marmalised in one round by the light hitting Lamont Peterson, or the amateurish Richard Abril, who was on the back foot taking shots all night.

That the referee administered a count to all these guys really isn't the difference between Prescott and Valero, and saying 'Oh but they could have all been like the Khan KO' is beside the point as it's conjecture, the fact here is that most recorded KO's are decisions by the opponent (in this case, inept fighters) to stay down for a count and has more bearing on the willingness of opponent/practices of the referee than punching power.

Even if all of Prescott's early opponents WERE blown away in violent fashion, look at their bloody records for God's sake. Valero, apart from just looking at him fight and seeing that he hits harder, has blown away arguably a better class of competition, most of them in 1 round. I could give a lot of other reasons why Valero is naturally a world above Prescott in terms of power but I can't be arsed.

Can anyone else give me a hand here?

Have a good weekend

lol, that isn't right either, as if Prescott somehow KO'd Valero it still doesn't prove he hits harder than Edwin! :TU:

like i said we need to get them both on one of those punch machines, its the only way

cause the weakest of the PUNCHERS could land first and the one who takes the shot may have a glass jaw, so again this would necessarily prove the other can PUNCH

those punch machines are questionable.

I prefer to use the argument that Valero has stopped everyone he faced, including toughnuts Cassiani, Mosquera and a couple of rock hard Japanese guys. These guys are not scrubs. While Prescott couldn't even stop the guy that feather puncher Lamont Peterson blew out in a matter of seconds, someone way below the calibre of guys Valero has been mincing in one round.

If we dissect their records and look to their opponents, we`ll see that of the ones with winning records, apart from Khan  .. Prescott hasn`t scored any early stoppages .. and the only stoppage he did score of the 4 with the winning records was Jose Augustin Feria who was 11-0-1 at the time .. in the 9th, but Feria`s record only shows he too had a seriously misleading record :witzend:

Where as valero`s record, still built up and padded with the usual types, has proved his firepower is legit by blowing away legit guys with winning records.
