I do think Calzaghe is getting overly pilloried here.
He beat Hopkins a man who went on to beat Pavlik and clearly wasn't a shot fighter when he fought Calzaghe. Joe also beat Lacy, who I thought would beat him, and put on a masterclass when doing it. He also beat a much unheralded kessler who should go on to better things...
Okay, Calzaghe can't be compared to Monzon and Hagler. BUT judging by the careers of many top fighters of the last 10-15 years, carefully selecting your opponents at the weight division and time in their career that suits you best is par for the course.

A passed it boxer is a passed it boxer. Regardless of how good he still is.Ezzard wrote:I do think Calzaghe is getting overly pilloried here.

That is why Calzaghe does not get credit for his "win" against Hopkins, let alone the fact that mant had Hopkins winning anyway. In a proper Spectators eyes, it was nothing more than a draw.
Re: Top 100 ATG - My Personal List
Calzaghe will always get stick for not rematching his closest fights(by the way the underrated Reid made Calzaghe look like a fool long before Hopkins did) yet giving the man who made him look like a prime Mike Tyson a rematch was ok.

- Such silly nonesuch. Reid made himself a spoiler and couldn't be bothered to do more than pose and use his strength and experience to frustrate the offense of Joe.banjo wrote:Calzaghe will always get stick for not rematching his closest fights(by the way the underrated Reid made Calzaghe look like a fool long before Hopkins did) yet giving the man who made him look like a prime Mike Tyson a rematch was ok.
Nobody to pay to see a stinker like that and who can blame Joe for not wanting to endure the stink again?
Gotta fight for it to get the win, not crawl around on all fours yelping about your pirate for half the fight like Mr. Popkins The Executioner was doing after opening up Joe with a headbutt.

Hopkins is still considered to be one of the best fighters in the world. He was also champion at the time.observer1 wrote:A passed it boxer is a passed it boxer. Regardless of how good he still is.Ezzard wrote:I do think Calzaghe is getting overly pilloried here.

If you are willing to apply the same logic to Roy Jones career then fair enough but otherwise it's unfair.
