In many ways yes they are treated disgracefully although I think Lennox Lewis doesn't get as much stick as the others but the one that really gets me is the criticism that Naz gets, forget what he's done outside the ring and look at what he did in it. He beat every featherweight title holder - Robinson, Johnson, Vazquez and Soto he beat other fighters who have held legit titles like McCullough, Bungu, Kelley(and don't even try and tell me Kelley was shot FFS he lost one fight up until Naz and he was still considered good enough for Barrera and Morales years later) Ingle and Medina and his only loss came against a great fighter, in hindsight he could have easily been a champion at Bantam or Super Bantam given that he wasn't a large featherweight. You won't find another British fighter with a slate with as many quality fighters on other than Lennox Lewis.

As for Hatton, he's exceeded my expectations of him. I still remember that night I was ridiculed by all my mates after betting a fortune on Hatton getting blown away in 3 rounds by Tszyu, I never thought he was capable of it. Yes you can say he didn't fight this fighter and he didn't fight that one but virtually every boxer suffers that accusation and I actually think if he'd been developed better in the early days by putting him in with opponents who he would have had to use his brain to beat rather than rely on outmuscling them he'd have been a far better fighter today.

He should retire IMO, he'll never be any better than he is now, his box office drawing power must have taken a dent following that defeat and he's unlikely to be able to motivate himself for other fights against the likes of Bradley or Torres and could easily end up losing to them because of it. He's still young at 30, he's set up for life and has a family to care for so I don't see the point in him carrying on really, sure there's pride but that's when you end up with fighters like Julio Cesar Chavez who ended up struggling with and losing to fighters who would have been blown away in his prime.

Ricky Hatton does not deserve all of this sh*t going on!!

I am surprised people are not stating what a credit he is to the sport - no matter what you critics say - he did an awful lot when the sport was on its knees looking for a star to celebrate!!
2 elite prime fighter he fought and he got stretched both times.

Sht happens.

He is a hardworking lad, but not the elite fighter he makes out, no shame in it , just admit it!

Not my kind of fighter, but he has done well.
Whether you are correct or not!!!

He still did an immense amount for British Boxing - IMMENSE!!!

True, but does that make him above constructive criticism, Spud?

At last - a question worthy of some debate!!

Of course not mate!!

Ricky Hatton is like anyone of us - he deserves his flack just as much as we do!! - however I am just wondering what would have happened if Ricky had beaten Pacman this weekend - a lot of people prior to the fight happening had it as a possible close fight - just because of the result he is getting sh*t - there is distastful photos on the net - distastful comments concerning those photos - his girlfriend is taking sh*t and I do not think he is deserving of that sh*t.

You mention constructive criticism - now if people chose to discuss where Hatton went wrong with regards his performance then fine they are entitled to their opinions - OF COURSE THEY ARE - however what is happening here is a public "personality" etc etc assassination of Hatton and I do not think he deserves it when he has done so much for boxing in this country!!!

My opinions are honest ones on this matter - I could easily be bitter and twisted as I honestly believe Ricky and his team did not treat Fight Academy too well when they jumped over to Golden Boy - when the Mayweather fight was going to happen anyhow regardless of who Ricky was being promoted by - but people will also have their opinions on that too - they are entitled to them.

Overall though - I will repeat Ricky Hatton has achieved an a lot in boxing and he should be proud of those achievements and I think it will take a very special boxer indeed to gain anywhere near the support Hatton managed to get.

agreed spud from another thread but relevant i posted:

i think Ricky should retire, if only so i can come onhere talk boxing without some c*nt hijacking the thread aobut how ricky hatton tortured their cat or similar. twats.
Honestly half the time youd think we were talking about Mugabe.

kinell..

The bloke has been a great champ who has fallen short agains the very best no shame in that, lots of fighters have done that through the ages, he has been an ambassador for the sport while others have pissed it up the wall, beaten their wives, behaved like gansters, got drugged up or plainly gave in the first time they got beat etc etc, he has represented the British with a smile, not taken himself too seriously and endeared himself to people wherever he has gone.

He has always trained liked a devil and given it his best as he could , get off the mans case.

We should be proud of what a short stocky manc managed to do with his fistic career not slating him.

Thanks for the memories, the fights ive been priviliged to attend including that great night against Zoo and the good times Ricky .............history will remember you more kindly than a bunch of no mark fools on the internet most of whom would piss there beds at the thought of taking on the best men in the square circle.

Now its time to retire mate
Amen brother peace.

Yes.

There is no point being naive about this. We are, after all, fans of a sport in which the aim IS to knock a man out.

There was nothing accidental about this, nor was it unpredictable.

With all these "funny songs" and "comedy nights" and "madchester barmy army" etc, with their football songs, people seem almost to forget that this isn't WWE, this is professional boxing.

What i hate is a fighter biggin himself up to be the worlds best( hatton, froch, haye, hamed and khan and none of them having proved it,you have to beat the best available contenders to prove that,i have no problem listening to fighters mouthing off if they have done it,until then they should keep it shut as far as i'm concerned.Yes be confident, but don't take the p##s out of us,anyway real boxing fans don't fall for most of it,it's mainly the general public who believe such crap, and it's them that buy the tickets to see the shows.

hamed beat bungu, vazquez, kelly, johnson, medina, mccullough, ingle, robinson

ok he was terrible vs barrera, but how can you not say those above guys aren't some of the best contenders around? all of them held world title belts and many had big reputations even if some weren't at their best

rookie champ froch has beaten the best "available contenders". Inkin wasn't available so he beat Pascal. Taylor finally became available and Froch ran the bastit over!

Terry D wrote:Oh, I agree with those defending Hatton, he did a lot for British boxing, and his wins over Tszyu and Castillo more than make up for missing the superfight with Bradley. Although not fighting Sharmba Mitchell could come back to haunt him...

..or maybe not.

When making a casserole you can only use the ingredients to hand, and Ricky made a fine casserole.
Ricky's been tremendously successful and i think he's shown how important the personality side of the sport can be - as well as the fighting itself - in having a high profile. He seemed to be on fumes for a number of his post Tszyu fights so for him to have had the PPV successes he's had and the sellout crowds is an achievement in itself.

seems like his achilles heel was always a southpaw right hook, and i reckon sharmbah mitchell and judah would have been nightmares.

as to manny pacquiao - he hasn't done shit! never beat a top light welterweight in his prime! he can fight bradley and holt, or piss off!

Look at what he did when he lost his first fight at elite level, in his prime, at such a young age, he retired without telling anyone, even to this day!!!

Criticism is something Naz brought upon himself. He was an extremely talented boxer with the guns to back up his boasts and was riding on a high for several years before he finally stepped up to 'elite' level and got 'owned'. A true champion would have tried to bounce back, but Naz burrowed himself away never to be seen again (except against that Spaniard). His ego could not take the loss. His ego could not accept he was not, and never would be, the VERY best, an elite level fighter, something he had always boasted to be. A rematch with Barrera was on the cards but he wanted no part of it, nor did he want Morales or Marquez. That has tainted his career, and he only has himself to blame for it.

I never said he was great, I said look at the opposition who he beat but from the way people go on you'd have thought he fought nothing but bums for his entire career. Yes he did avoid Marquez, he didn't fight Morales but tell me how many other world class fighters in the history of boxing didn't fight somebody somewhere along the line? Yes he got comprehensively beaten by Barrera and never recovered from which is rightly why he will never be an all time great but based on his list of opponents he puts the likes of Calzaghe and Hatton to shame even though he isn't anywhere near as decent a human being as those two are.

hatton's had a better career for me.

hatton has fought his shares of guys on a par or better than the likes of kelley, soto, johnson, mccullough, ingle etc.

and beat tszyu and castillo on top of that.

and didn't piss off after a defeat.

hamed also missed out on decent fighters like gainer, espinosa, norwood.

and never fought marquez (a mandatory) and morales.

morales would have been the obvious fight to build towards after the barrera defeat.

not interested. :shame:

We hate it when our friends become successful.
Oh, look at those clothes,

And such a video, Well, it's really laughable,
Ah hahahaha etc.
We hate it when our friends become successful,
And if they're northern
That makes it even worse and
If we can destroy them
You bet your life we will destroy them.
If we can hurt them, well,
We may well.
It's really laughable,
Ah hahahaha etc.
You see, it should have been me.
It could have been me.
Everybody knows, everybody says so.
They say, "Oh, you have loads of songs,
So many songs,
More songs than they can stand --
Verse, chorus, middle eighth break"
Just listen,
"La la la etc."
