Boxrec can be wrong (sorry, Shep). They have 100 fights for Monzon, for example, when every other source has 101 (60 by knockout), and Monzon is hardly a fighter from the dark ages. Let's just say Carnera was better than most people believe. Carnera climbing off the floor repeatedly against a vicious-hitting Joe Louis proves he was all fighter.
Like Louis, Foreman was also a monster, a surly monster, then a cuddly monster but, either way, a monster. The right hand he landed to the back of the head on a falling Gerry Cooney in 1990 could have killed Cooney.

No, it's not that. I'm like everybody else, some things you get right, some things you don't. One big hitter that really fascinates me, who didn't even fight for the title, was Elmer 'Violent' Ray, who had an unbeaten run of more than 50 fights, beat Jersey Joe Walcott and Ezzard Charles, but never got a title shot. According to the stats, which can only be approximate, he knocked out 70 of 86 people he beat (lost about 13). He's a bit mysterious, seems to have been born in Putnam County, Florida in either 1910 or 1911, and might have died in Los Angeles in the 1980s.

Just his nickname says everything, In those days nicknames were borne out of pure ability.

There is a well told story of a 150lb Charley Burley putting the 200lb Elmer`Violent`Ray to sleep during a heated sparring session in 1944 or 45.

Sure, but sparring stories are a bit like fishing stories. It might have been absolutely true, might have been just another boxing 'incident' that grew out of all proportion the more it was told and retold. Or was a complete fantasy. And there are plenty of those in boxing to keep us all guessing for as long as we like. Who knows. Burley was exceptionally talented - think that's beyond dispute. How good Ray was is another matter, but he wasn't bad to get a decision over Walcott in a fight that someone described as 'as close as your breath'.

Agreed .. but Violent Ray must have made a real impression on Burley because he forever called his pet dogs Elmer after the incident .. or alleged incident
