'One of the best in the business'?!
Cutmen, right. when did you EVER hear them referred to by any kind of commentator, without that 'one of the best...' line being trotted out. they are ALL 'experienced', and all pretty much on a level with their peers. I am wondering if, somewhere in the world, there is a cutman who is merely 'pretty good at his job' or 'not bad'. or even heaven forbid a poor one. imagine that from a commentator, 'fighter x has a bad cut there he'll have to have a lot of work done in the corner which is a shame, because his cutman y is known NOT to be one of the best in the business, inexperienced and he's got the hands of a retarded German rapist'
at least 500 man points for anyone who can recall any kind of commentary suggesting that a cutman was anything less than a battlefield surgeon who could stop the bleeding from anything below a 9mm bullet wound.

Re: 'One of the best in the business'?!
80% of a cutsmans job is down to lady luck, the other 20% is made up of the cutsmans skill, experience, the referees tolerence, whether its the house fighter cut or not, etc etc...
Re: 'One of the best in the business'?!
I don't know of one said before hand, but I can remember one or two instances when Jim Watt said when the fighter is in the corner "just what is the cutsman doing pouring water on the cut"! But cannot remember a specific cutsman being labelled average before he got to work.
Re: 'One of the best in the business'?!
Am I right in saying the top 2 are Mick Williamson and Benny King.

I remember some high-profile American fighters having jokers in the corner. Didn't have a clue. The guys who looked after Jones Jnr against Calzaghe?
Re: 'One of the best in the business'?!
i dont think Barrera had one for the Khan fight
think it was his Brother or mate that was in corner
Dont think it would have mattered anyway to be honest as cut was horrific

What was the fight where it looked like the cutsman was trying to put a piece of string in the cut? Very weird. Also Tysons corner against Douglas was inept - think it was Rory Holloway who was using some sort of ballon to control the swelling near Tysons eye..
Re: 'One of the best in the business'?!
Yeah, i was going to mention the Tyson Douglas fight. I think it was either a condom or a rubber glove full of water. That definitely received a negative commment or two.

v Bruno, Aaron Snowell had a rubber glove (or what looked like one) full of water and was rubbing it against his eye. Some of the most inept corner work I've ever seen was from that guy......Tyson's had some useless pudenda in his corner......Bright etc.
Re: 'One of the best in the business'?!
I remember the commentators on Setanta (or maybe HBO) commenting on how surprised they were that Kesslers cutman was not using an 'enswell' on his eye when it started swelling in his fight against Calzaghe. They may have said that it was amteurish?
Re: 'One of the best in the business'?!
Ive had kids with cuts that needed 28 stitches after winning a Fight, Home Fighter Then taken a Kid away got a Nick really, started getting on top and the Ref stopping it. Giving me a knowing look when He did.

Anyone know howe cutman start off? Are these guys usually trainers as well?
I just can't imagine how you'd discover that you had a special talent for it, other than out of necessity if the fighter can't afford one and you're the only guy in the corner.
How did Williamson, Mancini, Bodak, Diaz etc... get their big breaks?

I couldn't believe it when the Barrera corner didn't put any grease on his cut. It would have stopped the bleeding better than the inept swabbing they employed, may have allowed Barrera to see enough to KO Khan, and won me so much money..
jesus christ, and now the easy money from haye fight gone, f**k boxing betting.
Sorry, digressed there. No, can't remember a cutsman with a dodgy reputation, what is the percentage of fighters who actually have a prescribed 'cutsman' as opposed to generic 'cornerman'?

Re: 'One of the best in the business'?!
one of the best in the biz is a boxing cliche, for sure
Re: 'One of the best in the business'?!
One of the best cutsman has to be Joe Souza, the job he did on Vitali against Lennox was impressive considering the depth and positioning of the cut.
Re: 'One of the best in the business'?!
The best cutsmen don't get their due credit. Danny Holland was widely regarded as the best domestic cutsman for years but who remembers him now?
Re: 'One of the best in the business'?!
Tyson's corner was shocking. Did not even have the basic equipment hence the awful eye.TerribleTerry wrote:What was the fight where it looked like the cutsman was trying to put a piece of string in the cut? Very weird. If i am correct, they used ice in a rubber glove to put on Tyson's eye
Re: 'One of the best in the business'?!
The best cutsman in the business are Williamson and Diaz imo.
There is several fights where the cutsman has been criticised, one of which is Miranda's fights, but I can't for the life of me remember the actual opponent or date.

John Rawling comes immediately to mind for that line. Maybe we should have a thread for catch phrases?

Bennie, Danny taught me a lot, was a wonderfull man. Always giving good advice
Re: 'One of the best in the business'?!
McCrorys name just reminds me of a tale of someone asociated with Him.
DD Had this Kid going for his 1st Title,20mins to go and the Guy asks if He can prepare Him I say yes so He takes Him in the Toilet. One minute later theres screams, I rush in and the Kid cant see, He is Blind. I ask the American Coach what He had mixed with the vaseline, He says Newskin, what thats supposed to do I dont know
.The guy is Shitting Himself 15 mins to go before we go on and a blind Fighter on our Hands. Luckily I had plenty with me the best eyewash there is !/1000 Adrenalin 5 mins we were ready to go the Kid won and my thoughts on American Trainers had just changed for ever

Vitalis cutman in the Lewis fight made the cut much worse. he looked terrified when vitali got up from his stool to complain about the stoppage
