Artie Powell + Jim Powell

Post by shell09 »

Hi. I know this may not appear important but the record of boxer Artie Powell (198525) is dreadfully inacurate. Surely you can get it right as he only fought ninety odd years ago. :-?

Seriously, the major faults are the fights against Percy Young on the 23rd April 1915 and that against Danny Brownlee on 15th October 1914. Boxrec has him losing by points when he actually won both these fight on points.

I would also like to know what is required to have other fights added to Artie Powell's record. The fights I have documentation on are;

v Alf Bromwich - Won Pts 20 at Cessnock NSW

v Reg Delaney - Won Pts 20 at Cessnock NSW - Referee Jack McBlane

v Jack Kerrigan - Won KO 6 - Referee Les Corbett

v Phil Guthrie - Won Pts 6 - Referee Fred Baker

v Stan Campion - Won Pts 6 - Referee Fred Baker

v Billy Yates - Lost SD ? at Woolongong NSW - Referee Dan O'Connell

As you can see, with these fights alone Artie Powell's record changes from a losing 3-6 to a winning 10-5.

He fought out of Ern McQuillan's Gym if that helps but unfortunately I can't find any more than the documentation that was passed down through the generations.

Did I add that the "documentation" are newspapper cutouts from the related period. The exact dates are missing and the paper is old and brown.... although the results and accompanying comments can not be mistaken.

Finally also would like to advise that Jim Powell (242362) fought out a four round draw with Merv Todd at Parramatta on 5th June 1941.

Thankyou very much. It's one thing to have results missing but it's another to have results incorrect, especially multiple errors.

Artie Powell fought against Australian champions Herb McCoy and Tommy Uren but they weren't title fights. I can refer to a site that verifies Artie Powells winning record.

Very disappointing that nothing has been done.

Artie Powell fought in one of the greatest eras of Australian boxing yet his record is shamefully incorrect.

Could someone please do the right thing and make an effort to have it fixed.

I doubt it will happen if Aussie researchers Graham Dicker & Mike Attree can't locate the articles on microfilm to back-up your claim.

Would original articles from The Sydney Morning Herald be acceptable?

I have copied them onto sites such as Photobucket, the articles clearly indicating Artie Powell's record of being at least 12-4, not the 3-6 as seen on this site. I would be prepared to make it as easy as possible for those that have the job of researching these types of records, even if it means I have to travel and produce the papers in person.

While I acknowledge that records of boxers a century ago don't hold much interest to the vast majority, it would be much appreciated by those that hold him dear in our hearts.

I would like to add that Artie Powell does belong to one of Australia's great boxing families. Both his uncles (George and Ned) were champions of their era while Artie's son Jim held his own with distinction.

George Powell was the very first man to win the Australian Lightweight Title, defeating Young John King by KO after their first fight was declared a draw after going 51 rounds. He also went 20 rounds with Young Griffo after dropping 5kgs to make the featherweight limit. The Sydney Herald reported him as being "one of the best featherweights the world ever saw."

Ned Powell was one of the finest bareknuckle fighters Australia ever produced before going on to second and train heavyweight champion "The Black Prince" Peter Jackson for some of his bouts in Sydney.

Artie's son Jim held a record of 16-3 before going off to New Guinea as part of Australia's 2nd Pioneer 2nd Battalion division that fought the Japanesse. During service he fought IAS bouts and remained undefeated until the end of the war. Unfortunately Boxrec only has two of his professional bouts listed.

Please inform me if the copied articles would be acceptable. I can highlight the areas which give all the required information and forward it when requested. Thanks.

ANTON, I thought that I'd just send the article relating to one of the fights that is already listed before sending off everything.

The fight is Artie Powell v Percy Young 23 April 1915. Should the article be enough proof to have the result changed correctly, I'll start on the rest of them.

Thanks

I noticed that the result hadn't been changed so I checked the e-mail I sent you and realized that it hadn't gone through correctly so I've sent it through to you again.

Sorry about the stuff around. Know that I appreciate your help.

By the way, if you click on the e-mail's link you can also view some of the other articles that were downloaded including some old pictures and photos of past champions.

Just thought you may be interested.
