Ali had a real soft spot for Joe Bugner. When Ali was exiled, they used to spar together in the States and the Brit always insisted Ali be paid.REAL_DEAL wrote:i like the bit where parkison basically called joe bugner a bum and ali defended him.
In the book, Muhammad Ali's Greatest Fight by Howard Bingham and Max Wallace, it was revealed Ali was so skint he tried to sell a portable radio to Bugner, saying "It's just what you need, Joe!"
Parky made a big mistake in challenging Ali's religious beliefs on the show. He later admitted he deserved the tirade that followed. Ali's conversion to Islam was, of course, no passing phase.

In the context of 70's heavyweights, Bugner wasn't talented. His main asset was durability. He had the durability to stay upright against the leading heavies of the day, but, sadly, rarely came to win.Hardhitters11 wrote:Bugner was a talented fighter and Ali recognised that...
Ali just liked Bugner. There were very few white heavies Ali didn't like (he liked Quarry, too). It was his black rivals he despised.

I have always been a bit of a closet Bugner fan and felt we never saw what he was capable of.
He beat the likes of London and Cooper and faired well enough against Ali and Frazier so he definately had talent...
Even in his later days when he was well past it he did ok against some younger heavyweights and even beat a few.
