Have you thought for one minute that Powell has his say here and there to assist the trainer ??

Perhaps due to the trainers inexperience or - simply due to a fight perhaps not going to plan and there needing to be a Plan B which the assistant trainer in the corner may bring with his insight.

There are many good trainers - absolute fantastic at all of the technical stuff - however they may not be good talkers and as such someone else in the corner who can talk sense is a good thing.

Another trail of thought is - perhaps the trainer has said to Powell - "I am not getting through to him - have a word will you??" :TU:[/quote]

In response to Spuds quote above
Am sorry but it just seems like he does it in a lot of fights or I would'nt have bothered to post this topic!!!

And I don't think a trainer would normally ask him to speak. Normally a trainer would have another guy assisting him who would give some input!

If your employed to do cuts then do cuts!!! Paddy Byrne is heralded as one of the best and I know for a fact he does not interupt the trainer! He is good at his job because he does what is required of him and he has been all over the world because of it! Mikkel Kessler etc

I have given you very good reasoning why someone in the corner other than the trainer would say something.

Another thing which you havn't thought of - most corners know exactly who is in charge and everyone normally knows exactly what their place is in the scheme of things - and thus no one normally takes offence when someone is saying something to the fighter as most will realise it may help!!!

I honestly believe you have a problem with Dean - what is it ?? - whilst we are here just so you dont think I am too far up his arse - I have a problem with him too - its the promotional firm he works for - never have liked them too much :TU:

And as for cutsmen - there are 2 in particular who were top notch - one still is they are Mick "The Rub" Williamson and Denni Mancini!!! - whilst Mick goes about his business - he occasionally has a word here and there!!! mainly to reassure the fighter!!!

As for Powell - never once seen over talk the trainer - he watches and listens and then if there is an opportunity he states his case - thats normally when the ring announcer states "corner 10 seconds" - seriously watch when he is next in the corner you will then see if I am correct!!!

I don't think Dean Powell is a good trainer because sometimes I find he talks s**t and He shouldn't be in Amir Khan's corner when Freddie Roach is in Khan's corner.

As a matchmaker he is very poor. Ingle and FTM's matchmaker is better than him.

Please I am trying not to sound personal!
I eat sleep and breathe boxing! I have a problem in I think he gets too involved in a corner, end off!
I know he was asked to leave a corner in fight, I will go as far as saying it was a scottish fighters corner! The trainer was asked if he could help in the corner, the trainer said fine if he wants to but when the break came he had to much to say for this coach and was asked to leave. Part of my comment comes from this but mainly from my experience of watching him on telly.

My comments come from years of watching/involvment with boxing!
Don't get me wrong I know of others who do it but to me he has been the most obvious! & this has caused this break in silence! I have an opinion, I hope it is constructive and try not to make it sound personal, I try to go straight to the point! And if I decide to comment on other points/topics you will notice this!

To be fair, i think Dean's getting a rough ride on here.
He does have a wealth of experience working with big name boxer's in big fights. . you can't deny that, and that sort of experience is very reassuring to some trainers.
I personally have worked with him and as an inexperienced cornerman, learned a few things. He is one of the best at bandaging hands and i did learn that off him.
He does sometimes seem to take over in the corners but that may be because things are not going well, or maybe the head trainer doesn't communicate well enough? Or sometimes maybe just the fact that he gets carried away with what's happening in the fight!!
But to be honest, if it was THAT big a problem, surely the trainer/boxer wouldn't have him in the corner the next time?

I do remember during one fight that was televised, they would cut to the corner just prior to the round restarting and it was dean who would be saying something..but for the previous 50 seconds of the break he hadn't been saying a word. Just how things can come across really i suppose.

Have to say though, Jimmy Tibbs and Jim Evans are two of my favourites as they don't say anything to the boxer, but as the round is in progress may give a little advice to the trainer.

Spud wrote:My beef concerning Powell is what he stated in his interview with Shaggy - it seems that has now been cleared up.

As a cornerman - he is outstanding - when he says something to a fighter during a fight its seems it is always relevant and needs to be stated.

Powell's knowledge of the sport and how things works can only be rivalled by very few people.

Excellent trainer and you have to say an excellent matchmaker.

at the end of the day powell is a 10% man and is only looking out for him self. ??
you might say he is outstanding as a cornerman but i think he should never be let near a corner. (because he has never boxed in his life) so how can he know what a fighter is feeling.it.s like me reading up on how to drive. until ive done the test im not aloud to drive. ive met powell many times over the years and ive found him to be very rude.one time he toataly blanked me in a gym i was training at.then another time (when i had a fight comming up) he greeted me like a long lost brother.at the end of the day you cant treate people like that.(you treate people the way you.d like to be treated.) ive noticed that he.s only nice to you when he wants something ??? ie 10%

I dont think more than one person talking in the corner is a bad thing, nor is it uncommon.

Watch Hagler v Mugabi. You have Mickey Duff, George Francis and a Priest all talking to Mugabi.

I have known Dean since he 1st came to london, dean is a grafter and learnt from many guys, he watches fights and learns from them, and if he thinks there is a way that would help the fighter, he will speak to the trainer 1st and ask if its ok to assist with comments, (something you miss) and will add when needed, I have done the same thing as well, sometimes I have assisted in the corner, the boxer gets a cut, and his trainer has asked me to do the cuts!!!, so I know exactly what Dean does..

Dean appears to me to be a first class Helper, he knows boxing , he has assisted many who know more , and obviously learnt from them , regarding trainer well, like i said first class helper , probably a important one, but helper just the same , he has not got the runs on the board has a trainer that others have .

Regarding taking over in corners well thats a hard one, i used to assist a guy regular, and always ended up taking over in the corner, the reason for that was even though the guy was a top trainer , in important fights he just lost it, and the more important the fight the more tongue tied he got. Dunno what it was , I guess his nerves just took over, nobody noticed except his most experienced fighters. So on fight night in effect he became my assistant for his lads and they experienced ones let him know they wanted me there ,always in a nice way off course

On the other hand i have assisted other corners , and been told they liked me in the corner because i done my job and shut my mouth, never opened it on the apron just passed comments down on the floor, and even then shut up unless i knew the trainer wanted my opinion.

Myself has a trainer , i would always take a assistant who 's advice i trusted but on the apron , ONE VOICE ONLY, MINE.

Its conjective , different strokes and all that . but i'm sure the likes off Roach if he feels Dean is over stepping the mark will say so, and others would'nt have him back either.

So i guess over all he must be doing something right he is working at the higher level off the game , and would'nt be doing that if he did'nt have knoledge

you might say he is outstanding as a cornerman but i think he should never be let near a corner. (because he has never boxed in his life) so how can he know what a fighter is feeling.

It never did Angelo Dundee any harm. Or Terry Edwards.

A coach / trainer should be judged on their ability to coach, not what they achieved in the sport themselves. Some excel with no experience as a participant, others were great themselves but can't coach for toffee. To me a passion for the sport, an open mind and ears, and learning from those that have been there can go a long way towards overcoming a lack of personal experience.

I don't see the point of this thread - it's fairly commonplace to have a cornerman who tries his best to motivate and advise a fighter between rounds, there are plenty of cornermen who are not lead trainers who do this.

Can't be bothered to read every post, but I would like to say, from what i've seen of Powell as a cornerman, he's excellent.

When Herol Graham was abandoned on his comeback after an average result and then matched matched with prospect Chris Johnson, Dean Powell was simply brilliant at reassuring Graham. Just the odd comment or bit of advice at the right time helped Herol to a superb result.

My favourite Graham performance in his career. Did Glyn Rhodes abandon him??? I cannot remember that. I remember Glyn being very much anti his comeback and telling him to retire, but I also thought he said he would never let him down and be involved - just to make sure he will not get hurt.

Definitely one of Graham's best nights...written off, then turns back the clock in fine style.

I seem to remember Rhodes saying he wouldn't be a part of Graham's comeback anymore after the previous win, which didn't look good at the time, but Rhodes was back when Graham boxed Brewer for the world title.

what im trying to get at is if you have never boxed and your fighter comes back to the corner at the end of the round and say he.s been taking some heavy shots how would you know how that fighters feeling ????
for me thats what.s dangerus as a non fighter would say carry on where an ex fighter would know that the fighter has nothing left ??

also enzo calaghe-roy hilder never boxed :D
