Is 21 too late to start boxing? I had a go at 15 but it didnt last long so i wouldnt call it past experience. i would like to start for the fitness and to learn a self defence. Alot of boxers start at a very young age and i was worried im past it now. I read glencoffe johnson started at 20 just to lose weight, obviously im not aiming that high :D Thanks for any replies :TU:

I think there was a heavyweight in this year's English ABAs, "Mighty" Joe Young, who I think boxed for Repton, who was in his mid 30s. So I'd say it's not too late for you.

21 is no where near too late... there are alot of boxers start at a late age, so dont think your too old to start because your not...

Good luck bruv.

Oh are you planning on fighting or just doing it for the fitness?

Your at a slight disadvantage, with those who started at 10, but don't hold back. You will fight in the novice divsion for awhile, then move to open. While your skills may not be as good as someone who has boxed since birth, things even out over time. However I will say this, I have seen guys with great skills lose to guys who were in great condition. Conditioning wins fights, don't ever forget that.

Commitment and natural ability, two things that will take you along way regardless of age.

I thought at 21 you had to automatically turn "open". You can't fight 16 year old novice fighters at that age.

There is a novice division 17-34 years old. 11 fights or less.

I know in Scotland you could box amateur up to 35.

As myself and a few of my friends were forced to quit then.

But yes I knew a guy who started at 32 and although he couldn't fight after 35 still goes to the gym and trains with the kids and he's nearly 50

35 and over? Do they still require a CAT scan and full cardiogram for 36 and over. This is where most older boxers have the challenge. It's un "F"in believably costly and no insurance co is going to pay for you to have that so you can box. :-? I still spar with most of my boxers and I'm 50 yrs and still cranking.
