i still don't see the equation 'pac takes 600 punches to stop Diaz, pac can take 100 punches to stop cotto', i can't see how it works. maybe i am being too simplistic and it requires some ace forum equivocator to explain it to me.

The amount of punches doesnt really matter , it can come down to one solid perfectly thrown punch to a Boxers Chin and hes gone. And if he lands one like the Hatton finisher then i cant see Cotto Taking it
you never know though thats the beauty of boxing :TU:

Pac will just bounce about and throw loads of leather and give it his all as usuall

I don't think ive ever been so giddy about a fight since Oscar v Tito, may the best man win, they are both proven GREAT fighters and nice chaps out of the ring! Good luck to the pair of them :TU:

Manny has everything going for him, he has such momentum in his career and looks spectacular.
But I suspect, if Cotto can slow Pacquiao at all, it's over.
Against Clottey, Cotto had a nasty cut and Clottey gives his opponents plenty to think about. I think it was a better performance than some have said.
I believe Cotto is in charge of his training camp. . Is this right? If so, it don't sound like a smart idea.

Cotto by stoppage R4/5.

I would normally go with Cotto in this fight. I think the natural accustomed weight advantage and strength should be the decisive factor. But as always there are deeper entrenched confidence factors at play here. I think the Margarito fight was a massive dent for Cotto given the Puerto/Mexican competitive streak. Is he up for the challenge or banking on the dollars that such a high profile matchup entails?

We should expect anything but I think that Cotto may wake up and prove something of himself in a weight category that should be beyond the brilliant Pacman.

I think this is one fight too far for Pac. Cotto by stoppage in the seventh.

People are assuming Cotto is shot, based on getting mauled by Margarito and his plaster of Paris bandages, and his struggle with Clottey.

Cotto showed to me he had plenty left against Clottey, he sustained a horrific cut early in the fight, and was in against a very big, powerful and dangerous guy, and changed his tactics to box to a decision win in very difficult circumstances.

There's always the chance of a cut recurring of course, but barring that, I think Cotto is going to be too big, and too clever to allow Pacman to dominate like some are assuming. He'll circle him, throwing to the body and jabbing to keep Pacman at bay and will punish Pacman as he darts into range.

I think Pacman is probably tough enough and determined enough to last the distance, even with the size disadvantage, but think it will be a pretty wide decision for Cotto.

Pacquiao for me, too quick. My one concern is actually shown in the Hatton vs Pacquiao fight. I remain convinced that Ricky hurt Manny, Cotto is alot stronger than Ricky.

Clottey is a strong bugger, but is slow and his workrate isn't great. Cotto didn't convince me against him, many thought he shouldn't have had the decision.

I think Pacquiao will just bombared him with speed and sharp punches. I have the feeling he will stun Cotto and either stop him late or then settle for a points win. He will not "lose it" like Clottey did.

Cotto has better accuracy and strength than Hatton, so obviously its no forgone conclusion. I think the only way he wins is by stoppage.

for the life of me i can't see how people can be so confident in Pac stopping Cotto when pac's power above 135- hell, he had to bounce 690 punches of lightweight sitting duck target David Diaz to stop him- is, as yet, unproven. let me say again Diaz is tough but (a) about 20lbs lighter than Cotto and (b) shot and (c) not as defensively accomplished as cotto

but apparently according to some pac will stop cotto quicker than he stopped Diaz. :-?

even with the argument that Pac not having to drain to 135 or below makes him much better (which i kindof agree with but only kindof...) i still don't see the equation 'pac takes 600 punches to stop Diaz, pac can take 100 punches to stop cotto', i can't see how it works. maybe i am being too simplistic and it requires some ace forum equivocator to explain it to me.

oh and the pac not having to drain argument works both ways, surely? IE, he no longer has the advantage of bullying people naturally 10lbs or whatever smaller...?

and yeah, cotto had some problems with judah, but i have seen some totally stupid sheet talked about how that might relate to cotto-pac ('pac is like judah but with more power and a better chin' being only one of the more ridiculous statements, IMO), when IMO Pac's power AND chin are simply unproven above 135lbs.

then there is cotto. took some hellacious whacks from mosley over 12 rounds. yet somehow to some its a foregone conclusion that pac can stop him where the much bigger mosley- a man with one pucnh stoppages over not one but TWO full 154lbers- didn't even come close.

how the hell anyone can be totally confident, in the way Pac's chin matches Cotto's punch, and the way Pac's punch supposedly wrecks Cotto's chin, how anyone can be 100% confident on that, is beyond me.

hell, i can see pac winning, but to call it as anything but a really close fight in which probably 4 outcomes are entirely viable, to me I just can't see it

anyway so, today and for the last couple of days, my final until i make another prediction is Cotto stops him. my reasoning being, umm, pac's never took a pun ch from any fullgrown welter, cott is much better boxer and slightly better defensively than given credit for, and blah bla blah

mostly i see Cotto's jab messing with pac's timing and rythmn and pushing him back. of course, it's not the first time i have expected a much bigger welter to do that to Pac so who knows.....?
I've gone back and forth on who I think will win this too!!

One thing I will say is that the odds are ridiculous. Last time I saw odds this out for a close fight I made a killing betting on BHop against Pavlik. Something like 4-1!!??? Amazing looking back.

I've just stuck a few quid on Cotto at 5-2 on Betfair, because I think that is great value!!

And also, seeing as they're both Arum fighters, a couple of quid on a draw at 60-1 just in case the best possible case scenario happens for Bob

You can say Pacquiao's power at 147 is unproven, but at Lightweight???? Ricky Hatton might tell you a bit differently.

I aint sure why people are so against a Pac Man stoppage. This isn't Rocky Marciano he is up against. Cotto has been hit and hurt on several occasions. Its not just the Margarito fight, or "weight drained" against Torres. He's been hurt another 2 Welterweight title fights, he can be hurt and he can be hurt by smaller men.

Pacquiao might not have been "proven" puncher at 147. It doesn't mean to say he won't be.

It's a tough one to call - Cotto could really hurt Manny if he lands clean, but to me there's a real question about Cotto these days, one hell of a brave fighter, but has he been in a few too many wars? There is A LOT of wear and tear on the Puerto Rican.
I really think the Marg fight has taken a bit from him, and PacMan is on fire these days, at the top of his game. It could be a great one.

Cotto, for me, started looking sluggish around the Judah fight.

I remember seeing him against Ubaldo Hernandez I think it was, when I was at uni at around 2am on channel 5's ESPN coverage. He was so fluid, so fast, powerful and mobile - a great prospect. Success for him ensued - then I saw him vs Judah where his win was more rough and dogged than the stylist he had been earlier in his career, and from there he has looked distinctly beatable and has slowed down a lot I think, with his mobility really having suffered over the years.

Pac is going to look like dynamite here, the speed difference at this stage is night and day. Cotto's power may give him problems but I see Pac busting up Cotto and maybe stopping him late on facial damage or something, or just with cotto taking too many shots.

THIS SHOCK NEWS JUST IN:

'fighter takes gradual steps up in class and gradually looks slightly less dominating and above his opposition as he does so'

...wasn't saying that...

It's nothing to do with his opposition. Cotto has slowed down and lost his fluidity over the years. if you don't believe me watch his fights as a prospect then watch his movement vs Judah, night and day.

first, speed is relative, you can only really tell speed in relation to an opponent, IMO

so opposition IS important, in the context you are saying 'he looked ace v Hernandez and less ace vs Judah'

you mean, the Judah who until Pac got to 147, was the quickest fighter seen there in years? again, this newsflash etc, Cotto looked slower against a very very quick fighter.

second, wasn't hernandez back in Cotto's days at 140? about 7 years and 18 fights ago?

shock news headline no2, 'fighter gets slower with advancing age and weight'

for sure he was going to look better back in those days. he was fighting people with 2/3 his talents, at most. he looked more powerful going forward as there wasn't often much coming back, and his balance and fluidity looks worse, quite possibly because he is taking more punches (gets to your legs, it does) and fighting big bad nasty mofos like Toni and Clottey who can push him around

what's your 3rd scoop here, you gonna tell me Cotto has taken shots to the face and his scartissues are more vulnerable now?

anyway i guess i am saying, i don't think he's declined quite as badly as you do and i would assess it as par for the course, wear and tear from a career in a tough sport.

Cotto is currently 15/2 to win on points, while Pacquiao is 7/2 to win via points. That's from Paddy Power. Cotto is 40/1 & 50/1 to win in rounds 11 & 12 respectively. Cotto to win on points has got to be worth a flutter, given those odds?

Cotto is 8/1 to win by points & 7/2 to win by TKO/KO, Ladbrokes & William Hill!

Cotto 11/1 to win by points with Betfair. That's generous!

Me too, still convinced that cotto will be weak at the weight, yes he has weighed below 147 recently but he is getting older and i think dropping the extra 2 pounds will have a big effect, i hope cotto wins as i don't like these catchweight fights especially when they are still calling it a welterweight title fight.

my next door neighbour is philipino and he is a bloody nuisance with his parties every other week keeping me awake all night. i hope to god pac loses or its going to be hell around here. sadly, i cant see cotto beating him. an earlier version might have done it but he isnt that fighter anymore - still very handy but he doesnt have the form plus he's slightly damaged goods - and the GOK lookie-likey knows that "its all about the confidence!"

I think Hatton made Pacquaio look more devasatating - remember, Pacman wasn't even able to drop Oscar, despite Oscar not even firing back at all and being horrifically weight drained.

Remember that it took him many rounds of punishment to stop Diaz also.

I think the Hatton fight should be taken with a pinch of salt.

The filipino fans I met after the first Pacman v Marquez fight were absolutely mental, and totally deluded. They believed that Pacman had won

"he pu' hi' dow' three time in da firs' round'" they said.

"Yes mate, but he lost the next eleven rounds" I replied.

They didn't look too impressed.

How can we take such a fight with a pinch of salt. Some people thought Ricky's punch resistance wasn't as sharp as before - but he was hardly Herbie Hide.

It wasn't just the devastating KO. Manny hit and hurt Ricky on many occasions.... even when Ricky seemed to be getting sharp.
