What happens if Warren put Khan in with, say, Juan Manuel Marquez and Khan won.

Look what happend to Hatton and Calzaghe on their last fight under the Warren banner.... they became marquee fighters in the states.
Because Stu, with all due respect to the lad, Amir Khan is not Hatton or Calzaghe at that point in their careers! Plus i dont think Warren saw either of them guys leaving beforehand, or did he?
Another knockout to Khan and it'd make it a nother really difficult re-building process with instant success always expected in a deep talent pool in the US. Instead he'll pepper Salita and stop him late, and I expect him to look good doing it. because Khan does look good winning, doesnt he.
You chose Marquez there, a fighter who's light, old and could prove to be past his best (we wont know till he fights again what PBF took out of him). How about Bradley, juan Diaz, Urango even maidana... ? or, shock the world by giving Prescott his rematch instead of having him fight Mitchell ?

Why? There's a history of fighters ditching Warren when they feel they can make more money on their own, Hatton and Calzaghe did it, however, Amir is doing it a lot sooner.

Amir probably figures he doesn't need warren now, especially as he's working with Roach and wants to fight stateside, where Warren is loathe to do business.

Not sure how sensible being his own promoter is. I think it works well for one or two fights, but if you're going to try and make a big splash in the states, you need serious financial muscle behind you. Amir hasn't surely made enough yet to do this, so will he be borrowing to set this all up.

Ominous signs for Warren that Amir is looking to fly the coop so soon.

Cause Marquez is THE Marquee name. Thats why I selected him, Marquez is the one the could make the money.

THe only other one from that list is Juan Diaz.... he's quite big box office in the states. But again will have criticisms of being smaller, shot etc.

Prescott would have appeal here, but not in the states. Has had 2 ESPN fights since Khan - thats typically used for guys not wanted by HBO or Showtime.

Tim Bradley, Urango, Maidana etc - not known by the public. Good fighters, not fantastic fighters (the latter 2 especially). I think Salita vs Urango would be a good fight, close to predict.

I agree Calzaghe was very much at a different stage when he fought Hopkins. Hatton is different, when he fought Tszyu he had hardly ventured into World class and wasn't a world champion. Would Khan start as a bigger underdog against those quality names mentioned, as Hatton was against Tszyu? I would actually think Khan might start as the slight favourite against Urango, Bradley and Maidana.

I think Khan stands a good chance beating those guys, and I think Warren knows this also. Sure he has a china chin, but he has alot of good attributes. He made a solid, if unspectacular, world champion look very very average last time.

Prescott 2 would by a great match and a tough call, but it is no-way guarenteed to end up the same way. The only fighters who would really beat Khan are the likes of Mayweather, Mosley, Pacquiao etc - and they will definately be too hard.

So Warren was left with a predicament - does he give Khan the opportunity to lose, by giving him the best available fighter, but knows a win could propell him to a new level. OR, does he make his career stagnate further with a dull win over a solid, but not that respected, challenger.

With a fighter with 1 fight left in his contract, and you know is leaving you..... I know which option I would take.

Disagree, he is still a big big name in the UK. Granted people are not prepared to pay £15 for a him fighting an unspectacular fighter with an unspectacular undercard. However, he is still one of the more recognisable faces in British boxing.

He might have to swallow some pride a little bit and demand a little less cash, but as he will be a free agent he won't have promoter fees etc. Don't forget Warren said in order for HIM to make money with Khan he needed to be on PPV.

I can actually see ITV being interested again. Sky must have seen the viewing figures of Khan on ITV and thought he would make the transition to PPV. Okay, its not looking like it is going to be successful..... however, Khan is still a big big attraction.

Haye didn't need to work with anyone to get the Sky deal.... I don't think Khan will either. Obviously he'll need to work "in conjuction" with someone, to make sure there is an undercard etc.

marquee name, I probably shouldve used dangeorus opponent as thats what i was angling at.

Fair point you make. I'd personally give him the toughest I could.

Disagree on urango too, he's a solid champ, his chin is superb, great punching power, personally think he'd stop Salita handily, although thats a bold prediction without knowing what Salitas chin is really like. His fight with bailey was a cracker, numerous punches form both men that wouldve felled lesser opponents. Only argument is he's there to be hit at times.

What makes you think this Stu? you've propelled a man who was Ko'd in a round by Bredis Prescott into eliete level by ebating Kotelnik, Barrera and fagan ?

Wales,

Well there is alot of strength in the Lightweight - Welter devisions, but not that much depth.

There also seems to be 3 sort of levels of world class now also.

We have "super elite" - Mayweather, Pacquiao, Mosley, Williams and possibly Margarito and Berto.

Then we have an "elite" band - which are probably too faded or not good enough to beat the Super Elite but can command good purses and would give the Super elite good fights. This is where I would place the the likes of Hatton, Marquez, Diaz, Casamayor, Clottey, and Bradley.

Then we have the world class bands - solid world title challengers and champions - not yet in the elite bracket. Here I would place Khan now, and I would still have both Kotelnik and Prescott in this category. Urango would be here, as would Bailey, Ngoudjo, Malignaggi etc.

Now the Super Elite would wipe the floor with Khan. However, I don't think anyone could say with 100% confidence that the elite band would beat Khan. Sure, some would start as favourite, but Khan would have a good chance against them.

I didn't mean to say that the Kotelnik win pushed Khan into an elite bracket, but it did show he was a world class operator, beating a solid champion, who beat one of the fighters you mentioned that could face Khan. We still don't know enough about Prescott to know if he was a one punch wonder or not. He looked distinctingly average last time out, and if that is all Prescott is, then Khan should beat him next time.

If you did a world ranking from Lightweight/Welterweight.... kind of a p4p for those devisions. Hatton would probably still be in the top 6 or 7. Everytime I've brought up Khan vs Hatton a big chorus of response is "we don't want to see Hatton lose to Khan". Personally, I still think Hatton beats Khan - but it is no forgone conclusion and Hatton is still one of the finest fighters in these devisions.

You don't beat Kotelnik convincingly if you are not good.

Why is his best win tainted? Cause of what he did prior to the Mosley fight? Why isn't all his wins tainted then.

I did say "possibly" because we'll have to see how he comes back - but he has some good wins in the next bracket down - Cotto, Clottey, Cintron. He also ran Paul Williams very close.

That fact that we are debating whether I was right to include one fighter in the Super Elite bracket - highlights the lack of depth.

Khan has major, major flaws yes.... but so does alot of the fellow champion and world class challengers.

margarito is the ricky hatton of the welterweights.

tough, good pressure fighter, good left hook.

but like ricky he has issues with speedy boxers.

i scored the williams fight 8 rds to 4.

thought it was a fairly comfortable win for williams actually. :>

Khan never did it at that class though did he. Never won a euro title or british belt. At least clev is clearing out each systematically. Thats not me trying to say Clev has better opposition, but Khan didnt beat or fight the best in his domestic division.

he's not even got to european class yet.

hold the horses.

kotelnik is bottom half of the top 10 and he boxed his head off.

let's see if clev could do that to a light heavy equivalent.

someone like glen johnson.

domestic light heavy scene is tosh right now anyway.

Graham Earl was #1 Lightweight at the time of the fight.

Willie Limond was the commonwealth champion.

Martin Krisjansen had "hung" in EBU title class. Drawing with Zoff.

He later beat the former #1 Super Feather who ran Manny Pacquiao pretty close a year previous.

ANd then a former EBU and current WBA champion.

He might not have cleaned up domestically - but he's beaten far better than what Clev has done so far.

This is why I very, very rarely discuss anything with you anymore, Stu. You're like a dog with a f*cking bone. If you don't accept Margarito's victory against Cotto is tainted, there's nothing to say.

And before you start, NO, just because the twat was preparing to go out with plaster fists it doesn't NECESSARILY mean he was doing it before. But, it makes any rational person think, no?

I wasn't debating anything. I was asking questions, you might have thought they were daft questions But was asking why was the Cotto fight tainted, more so than the other fights? Did he hook up with that trainer for the Cotto fight and not for the others.

And before you start, NO I am not trying to start a debate or an arguement on this - I am asking the question. I'm not even, as you think I love to do, take a arguement just to be a pedantic so and so and piss James (or whoever) off.

There has been a school of thought on various forums, including this one, that Margarito "plastered up" for the Cotto fight (cause of the mess on Cotto - apparently he never gets messed up) and tried it for the Mosley fight.... but was "clean" in his other fights. Now that school of thought is one I just don't understand and I was wondering if James was in it or not.

My own view point is.... I don't care if Margarito plastered up or not before - the guy shouldn't be near a boxing ring in his life. He attempted to do the most disgusting thing a boxer could do and showed no respect for his opponent (who is also a kind of forgotton about cheat) or the sport. He should have been banned for life. However, he will invariably return and he will get the big fights which is why I put him in the "possibly" bracket of the "Super Elite" - his wins in the past, if they were legit, over Clottey, Cotto and Cintron make him worthy.... and, sadly, we will get to see if he can legitimately and fairly beat top fighters - cause there is no doubt he will be vicarously checked next time.

If you are to ask me the direct question "Do I think Margarito cheated in the Cotto or any other fight", my answer would be I don't know, I would like to think the checks and safety procedures are in place to catch any wrong doing, remember that he was actually caught before any punch was thrown against Mosley (thank goodness). I would like to think the checks would have been there to prevent it happen against Cotto or any other fighter. I would like that the checks before and after each fight was vigarous enough to show him to be innocent until proven guilty. Although I do feel bad doing that, cause I don't want to give that scumbag any "praise" whatsoever.

I think that is a fair enough, rational enough, stance. At the same time, I am aware that in the heat of a big box office promotion things can get overlooked. However, I was simply asking if James thinks all of Margarito's fights are tainted, or just the Cotto one (because of the manner of that performance). As I said, sadly we are going to find out how good Margarito is. Sadly, alot of athletes get caught cheating on one occasion but not on others, and they come back "clean" and a chance to reach the top of the tree again..... does that mean all of the performances, including all the times they passed the various tests get dubbed "tainted" or just the ones in which the excelled? Again, let me reiterate that was a question not an arguementative, pedantic, "dog with a bone" point of view. Should everything that Shane Mosley, James Toney, Linford Christie, Vitali Klitchsko, Dwain Chambers etc achieved and will achieve in future be labelled "Tainted", or should it be just the ones they were caught on, or should be the ones they got caught on and the ones they looked impressive also (forget the bad nights... must have been clean then)???? Again its a question, I would like to hear your answer too.... I can already give you my response to your impending answer "fair enough, IMO there is no right or wrong answer, respect your opinion" - so don't worry about a long winded, pedantic argumentative response.... it was a question.

I think I've clarified my stance on Margarito, hand wraps, Cotto, and who can would definately beat Khan enough now. Ian, if you don't like my style of posting, what I've got to say, and the way I rationalise things why don't you just press ignore. Instead of trying to bring it to everyones attention your views on me.

On a side note, did Margarito still get his millions for the Mosley fight? I don't think I read anywhere that he got his pay cancelled.

I feel like im picking holes for the sake of it now, and its silly because if you actually read and digested my post it said “Thats not me trying to say Clev has better opposition, but Khan didnt beat or fight the best in his domestic division.” It would just have been nice to see Khan do things “the traditional way” like so many people like, when it suits.

Graham Earl was #1 Lightweight at the time of the fight.

He’d just had all the fight knocked out of him by kastidis, many said he should retire after the kastidis fight. It was clear in the fight he hadn’t got owt left by the way he was felled with a jab. Come on Stu, Thaxton and Murray are massive gaps in Amirs british lightweight (non existent) reign. Prior to Roach’s involvement would you say he would’ve 100% beat them both? The UK was clamouring for Thaxton Khan when Khan was with Harrison.

Willie Limond was the commonwealth champion.
Commonwealth is like the diet-british title. Who did Limmond win it off again... exactly

Martin Krisjansen had "hung" in EBU title class. Drawing with Zoff.
Krisjiansen 7ko’s in 21 fights. Perfect for Khan who’s offensive boxing never is, and cant be, questioned. He is a world call boxer but has world class vulnerabilities which only a puncher (one would think, limmond might disagree) can exploit.

He later beat the former #1 Super Feather who ran Manny Pacquiao pretty close a year previous.
We’re talking about Barrera here… post Roach, controversial because of the cuts (why wasn’t the fight stopped before it had to go to the cards?). Ran Pacquiao close, didnt he take a bit of a shallacking in that one?

ANd then a former EBU and current WBA champion.
Post Roach, excellent hit and don’t get hit performance which probably switched ana rmy of fans off him ansd set out a blue print for how he's going to fight in the future.

Felled by limmond (badly – I wonder if Limmond would’ve been able to continue if it was the other way round?)
Felled by a shot blown up in weight Michael Gomez who 12 months last is fighting transvestites on the EBF circuit!
Knocked out by an unknown fighter who subsequently loses and never re-matches him.
Never wins euro title held by Romanov.
Never wins british title held at the time by Thaxton.

Like I say its just nice to see Clev doing things “the traditional way” like so many people like, when it suits. he's only had 18 fights, was Prescott Khans 18th or 19th? So they're really at similar stages respectively.

No, Stu, you weren't - though I do understand your later qualification. You initially asked 'Why is his best win tainted?' when it is self-evident why this is the case. Then you make a huge post trying to explain that you weren't in fact asking that but were really asking something else (which you might have been...as well).

I absolutely agree with you that he should not be allowed to box again.
