Liverpool’s Tony Bellew could step up against British-based Jamaican Ovill McKenzie in an explosive-looking encounter for the vacant Commonwealth light-heavyweight title on the big Paul Smith-Tony Dodson card in Liverpool on March 12.
“Bomber” Bellew has raced to 12-0 (8) in the paid ranks after a dazzling amateur careeer saw him win three ABA heavyweight titles. Always a bit blubbery up there, he slimmed down as a pro and hopes to emulate his home city's most famous fighter, John Conteh, the vicious-hitting (make that just vicious) former world light-heavyweight champion.
Bellew, 27, hits hard and looks like one of our brightest hopes, but this represents his first real test in the paid ranks. McKenzie, every bit as dangerous, is more battle-hardened and has previously held the Commonwealth title, which he won with a stunning second-round stoppage of classy Londoner Peter Haymer in a real upset in September 2006, although he lost the title just five months later when Basingstoke’s excellent Dean Francis nailed him and finished him with a perfect left hook in 107 seconds.
It remains the only time McKenzie has been stopped.
Nicknamed “The Upsetter”, the 30-year-old Derby puncher has bounced back in style, winning Prizefighter in an impressive canter last year and destroying ex-para Billy Boyle in less than a round last month. He starts fast and had future WBO super-middleweight champion Denis Inkin on the deck in the early stages of a losing eight-rounder at the MEN Arena in April 2004 - a man who beat Carl Froch in the amateurs.
As lively as he starts, McKenzie does seem to fade down the stretch, and this gives the slim, obviously well-conditioned Bellew his chance. On home turf, in a real ‘bombs away!’ affair (pardon the pun), Bellew outlasts the man in green.

Personally, I doubt Bellew-McKenzie will happen. McKenzie, on closer inspection, looks a bit too seasoned for the big-hitting if untested Bellew. Kudos to Bellew if it does.

You know your boxing, Carlos, so I appreciate the echo. Tony is obviously a likeable fellow and one of the best prospects in Britain but don't chuck him in with a bogeyman like McKenzie yet.
McKenzie has already beaten a former amateur star from Liverpool with an unbeaten record (at the time) - one Courtney Fry.

Thank you Bennie - and I can repay the same compliment to you.

What should happen is what they used to do with the cartel - bring in some Americans for a few 10 rounders and Tony can get the rounds in whilst building up his record. Once upon a time, the cartel would bring in opposition for the bigger boys from the states, Canada, Argentina and you never see it now! With the dollar as weak is it is now - this would be a fantastic time to bring in some good American journeymen
so Tony and dare I say it - even Nathan Cleverly can fight and learn from these kind of boxers - because sooner or later they will be meeting them if they enter world class.

Bomber needs tests, but who else could he fight?

Oakey and McIntosh square off soon so have to count them out. Fry didn't want the fight. Many others don't want the fight.

It means getting over some African, which will only bring criticism.

If Tony is to go far, he should be beating the likes of McKenzie. He wants the fight, supposedly does Ovil.. make it happen Maloney!

You are absolutley right! Thats my point! For some reason - we don't bring over decent yank journeymen anymore - one day Tony Bellew might be fighting for the WBC title and as you have just pointed out - he won't be facing some Latvian or Kenyan with an disputed record - more than likely he will be facing an American fighter.

Tony is at a stage where none of the other British contenders want to fight him - I don't blame Frank Maloney in not wanting Ovil McKenzie to fight Tony because Ovil has earnt his shot at the gold - so why take the step backwards to fight Bellew? So while he is waiting for Oakey and McKenzie to sort out their differneces for the title (something that they have earned) and McIntosh, Barney and the rest - FW could bring over a guy like this:

http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_ ... &cat=boxer

With a very weak dollar, it would be value for money - also - they will put up a scrap - and sometimes (if you remember Buck Smith vs Kirkland Laing) they win! :box:

Good call, Carlos, as jBacca is exactly right about Africans. However, Nigeria's Michael Gbenga, who went the full 12 with Dean Francis for the Commonwealth light-heavyweight title, is worth a bit of a mention.
He has never been stopped.

I remember Mickey Duff bringing over Nicky Walker to box Henry Wharton in York just after Henry won the Commonwealth Title.A great learning 10 rounds against a very tough opponent. Also, the crowd went home happy, and was the start of some great nights in York.

Mickey, I think you mean Henry Walker. Yes, he gave Kaylor 10 'learning' rounds, the kind of 'rounds' sorely lacking for Errol Christie.

Sorry, Mickey, I'm getting Wharton confused with Kaylor. Again, my apologies.

I'm think am speaking out of disappointment at the potential of some second-rate fighter being brought to fight last minute on the Liverpool card, when it looked like McKenzie v Bomber was all set.

The local lads are hoping 2010 is a big year for Tony, all starting with a title fight against good opposition.

If they can get someone in (like you and Bennie have mentioned), then i'll be happy, but there's always the last-minute jibes that could pop up if Tony wins.

Hello JBacca,

I think it is one of those situations where 'good things come to those who wait' Tony Bellew has talent and he has the punch but it is just not his turn yet. It doesn't look like the fight with McKenzie was ever on in the first place if we now look with hindsight. This could have been allegedly trying to make fight cards before finalising all the details. Last minute pull outs and stand ins are just part of boxing, though it does happen a lot with Big Boy Frank doesn't it?

It's only my opinion of course but get him amongst the final eliminators and then the top domestic light heavies will have to fight him and in the meantime bring in some good class Americans and I think you can look forward to a 2010 in which Tony Bellew is on the way to accquiring the tools in his quest to conquer the light heavyweight division - Rome wasn't built in a day and it should take another 2-3 years before Tony Bellew is fighting top class performers. My final point - in my opinion - he probably isn't ready for a tough experienced bull like McKenzie yet but in about a years time - why not? :box:

That's a shame, would have been a good test at this stage.

Another one falls by the wayside..
