No worries, Tony, if Cleverly wins the European tite on Saturday (which he will), the British title door opens – wide.
I know you want to fight for a title in Liverpool in March. It may just happen.

Can any mod please provide a reason as to why Lirva hasn't been banned from this forum yet as his trolling under multiple aliases are increasingly tiresome?

South Africa prospect Isaac Chilemba appears, somewhat surprisingly, in this country in a light-heavyweight 12-rounder in London on March 26 (no opponent as yet, no venue).
The 22-year-old Chilemba brings over a solid 14-1 (8) tab. The loss came on points in a six-rounder in 2007 and was avenged a fight later, since when he’s reeled off five more wins, including a big 12-round decision over Ghanaian iron man Charles Adamu, the Commonwealth super-middleweight champion who won the title against Liverpool’s useful Carl Dilks at York Hall in December and once gave Carl Froch a 12-round war in front of a packed house in Nottingham.
Nicknamed “Golden Boy”, the powerfully built Chilemba looks strong, tough, heavy handed and efficient. He clearly finds work at home hard to come by, with just two fights since Adamu in September 2008, which presumably explains this trip.
Chilemba looks tasty.

There's no obligation to explain, but when you have two boxers who want to fight one another and in a clash that fans would love, you can easily make the case that it would make sense to give an explanation.
After all, if one isn't forthcoming, my gut reaction would be that it's these types of occurances that are killing boxing...

Maybe Mr Maloney does feel Tony Bellew has a better than average chance .. doesn`t really mean anything. His job is to do whats best for his guy.

Much the same as when Gary Mason put it all on the line against a young Lennox Lewis. Mason wasted years of hard work and a sure world title fight against a young Lewis who didn`t bring anything to the table at that time. A shrewder manager wouldn`t have put Mason in with Lewis then .. even if Mason did want it.

What I can't understand is that Frank M is talking about McKenzie fighting for the British title, when, presuming Cleverly wins on Saturday and vacates the title, the guy who would be boxing for the British title is Bellew (possibly against Oakey).
I can't see McKenzie jumping the queue on the basis of winning prizefighter at a different weight. McKenzie's last 5 light-heavyweight fights were Boyle (W RSC 1), Ajisafe (L PTS), Salam (L PTS), Nilsen (W RSC 1), Francis (L RSC 1).
It would seem to me, McKenzie's only hope of a title shot is the Commonwealth title.
Bellew would destroy McKenzie too.

I'm perfectly aware that's the most plausible interpretation of the situation, but my point is that this 'protectionism' is damaging the sport deeply.

I don't see where you have Bellew ranked over McKenzie - its ridiculous - Bellew has not fought any of his fellow British title contenders. (for whatever reason) Tony's best win was against that German who went 10 rounds with Streglitz and Matthew Ellis. Let us know of Bellew's last five fights at light heavyweight. :TU:

McKenzie on the other hand is a former Commonwealth light heavyweight champion and has very good recent form. (even if it was for the cruiserweight prizefighter)

Bellew would destroy McKenzie? Thats a really bold statement to make about a fighter who has only been stopped once in 27 fights against a post-novice who has yet to go six rounds.

Deserter mate, we both know who is responsible for more or less killing boxing as a mainstream speactator sport in this country - especially regarding TV audiences. Protectionism HAS damaged the sport I think, beyond repair - and once the said promoter responsible retires - the remants can be salvaged.

And before anyone jumps into defend this certain promoter - if it was up to this guy - we would have multiple national title belts like they do in New Zealand and America.

I saw Bellew enough as an amateur to know his qualities. McKenzie got lucky that his Prizefighter win was against a bunch of old men.

How sure are all of you that when Cleverly wins the European he will vacate the British? It is not deffinate that he will surely? Why not defend it again and win it outright?

Just my thoughts guys, Iam sure you lot will hve the answere as too whether he will or won't vacate.

I strongly disagree with your implication. In my opinion, satellite/cable TV ruined boxing as a mainstream spectator sport. To blame an individual promoter is inaccurate.

aint they kept it going :!:

but wasnt there a boss a lady at itv that detested boxing as it was a bloodsport???

the michael watson incident i feel had a big impact on the sports popularity, as people love a tear up but when they see the results can result in life or death they turn off it.

even spencer olivers collapsing & emergency clot removing had a big effect on the sport dont you think??

Bellew v McKenzie should have happened. McKenzie deserves to be mixing it with the likes of Bellew as he has not got the breaks since he won Prizefighter. If both fighters wanted to get it on and it is clearly something that the punters want to see then what is the logic behind Maloney putting a halt to it?

Sod this.

If I want soap opera, I'll watch Eastenders.

Bored of boxing now- too many good fights just don't happen, and all the talk seems to be about the "politics" and of the sport.... Khan leaves Warren, Calzaghe in court, Hatton likes pies..

:witzend:

It's hard to follow fighters now - great wins are followed up with... nothing much. (OK, Froch and Haye are exceptions.) But look at how little competition there is for the British title.

The fact is that LITERALLY one or two competative boxing matches take place a WEEK in Britain.

Come on, cut the talk, lets see some promoters puitting on decent shows.
