Re: sparking the prospect
that buck smith was a bull strong, patient type of journeyman. Just shut up shop, soaked up ridiculous ammounts of punches and waited for his chance. fair play to him, i couldnt believe it.tijuana1 wrote:I remember Kirkland Laing gettin sparked in the 90's by what Reg Gutteridge called a Journey man Buck Smith. He had the biggest left hook, what a lucky swing it was. Me and my mate practiced it for years but thought we would get thrown out the ring for using it. lol.

Just cant help yourself can you. You start a thread trying to disrespect a boxer, you get put in your place so you bring it apon yourself to start this one knowing full well that Vinny got a prospect award at the LEBA the weekend so you could just mention him. Its you that has the obsession...cant contain yourself over a result, you was saying you didn't rate Vinny as a prospect anyway ...... Also, name calling shows frustration ;;-)rhino222 wrote:you burk, he WAS a prospect but his latest demise has put another nail in the coffin of his professional ambitions, either you are vinny mitchell, or you are one sad stalker. this thread is about prospects in general, NOT JUST your boyfriend !!Des1 wrote:So he's a prospect now? I'm no more obsessed than you though am I? Your the one actually starting the threads...

How about one that got the build up but got done before even turning pro.
Kelcie Banks was the nail on cert for a gold medal in the 1988 Seoul Olympics, but one right hand in the 1st round from Regilio Tuur ended that.
Tuur went on to have a decent pro career himself though.

I mind that, some of the worst refereein I've seen in person. He was clearly fecked after the 1st kd but the ref just let him get splattered.hendrix_lennon wrote:Willie Bilan from Fife was a really good amateur and Tommy Gilmour had high hopes for him after signing him.
After winning his first couple of fights he was knocked spark out by Alex Spitko on the undercard of a Kevin Anderson fight.
Was a pretty sickening KO and Bilan has never really bounced back from it.

Absolutely.
I remember watching him just basically drop to his knees and then keel over after the first knock down.
God knows how he managed to get back up, but the ref should have stopped it long before.

Who else was in the running?
His career as a pro hasn't exactly "set the world on fire."

Saunders was much better than his record would suggest. He also floored a 23-0-0 Mike Jennings in the first before being stopped in five in one of the final fights of his career. You can't help but feel if he'd been matched a bit easier earlier in his career he'd have a much better statistical record and perhaps got the british title earlier.

Not to sure to be honest, maybe just from the Capital being London Ex Boxers Association. Might let us know in boxing news.whicker wrote:London Ex-Boxers Association?Des1 wrote:He won it for the 08-09 session at the LEBAwhicker wrote: Really?

the jamie moore result was a big shock, i was there at the velodrome i think it was, undercard of farnell v tak....1southpaw wrote:jamie moore getting stopped by scott dixson ??????

jamie seemed 'gassed' that night and body shots took their toll, perhaps he took the training lightly...only mooresy can enlighten us, come on jamie, spill the beans.

i had no idea that vinny won prospect of the year at the LEBA awards at the weekend, and how on earth would i know, i live in lincolnshire..surrounded by spuds, tractors, polish people and drains (great pike fishing !!) .......im not too bothered about who won the prospect of the year, i bet those that voted are busy wiping the egg of their faces now !!
in all seriousness, there is a huge void at the moment in talent coming through from the capital, far more fighters are emerging from the midlands, wales, manchester and scotland...... but equally........how has vinny mitchell beat the likes of degale, groves and even tony owen and akaash bhatia in a prospect award from the capital...??
were stevie wonder and ray charles on the judging panel !! ....
Re: sparking the prospect
Has there EVER and I mean, EVER been an Eastern European fighter who was flown over as an "opponent", and ended up winning?
What would they do? Would they celebrate?
(As an "opponent." Notable fighters challenging for titles, or defending titles etc obviously don't count.)
((Alex Spitko doesn't count, as he is British based.))

Another good one: Andrew Singh Kooner got quite a bit of buzz for his British debut (Audley-Williams 2 undercard) and then he got absolutely wiped out by Shinny Bayaar, who was at the time still very much considered a journeyman.
Re: sparking the prospect
although he didn't win pavels dolgovs drew with ian lewison! he didn't exactly celebrate, but he looked surprised and gave me a bar of latvian chocolate, very nice it was too

Glen McCorry 13-0 lost KO4 to John Westgarth 5-2-2
Glenn Catley 7-0 lost KO 5 to Carlo Colarusson 10-8
Carl Thompson 8-0 got stopped in 6 by a then 10-3 Crawford Ashley in Manchester.
As mention Paul Silky Jones got KO'd by Paul Wesley 13-20-1
All went on to win major world titles, how many would have predicted that directly after these defeats.
