Hardest Puncher.
Hardest Puncher.
Which of these Heavyweights do you feel had the hardest punch.
Re: Hardest Puncher.
You did say PFP, so I'd say it's Mike Tyson from that bunch.

For one punch power I'll go with Tyson.

For one punch power I go with Baer. For pure 'hurt' and hardness of a shot I go with Foreman.
Re: Hardest Puncher.
So u think he hit harder then Baer or Foremen? The Great John L wrote:For one punch power I'll go with Tyson.
Id go Foreman. But if ur talking 1 hit power I think Baer.

Had to think for a bit. For one clean, crippling shot, I went with Baer.

Re: Hardest Puncher.
I think the original poster was talking about 1 punch power, and in that case, yes I would say he hit harder than Foreman or Baer. Baer would be close, but in general, George usually didn't end fights with a single punch.gambler49 wrote:So u think he hit harder then Baer or Foremen? The Great John L wrote:For one punch power I'll go with Tyson.

No one in history, "usually" ended their fights with a single punch. That kind of power doesn't exist.

Re: Hardest Puncher.
Yes, that's true, I didn't really state that properly. There are a number examples of HWs who stopped world class opponents with single shots, including George with Moorer. However, George pretty much always bludgeoned his opponents for a while before stoppages, even the lower level ones. Great power, yes, but I just don't think the single punch stoppage power was as good as a number of others, including Tyson.Goodnight, Irene wrote:No one in history, "usually" ended their fights with a single punch. Sorry, but I just have those memories of guys like Agosto, Dennis and Pires.

I understand, but Tyson's KO's were swifter as a result of velocity (much better than Foreman, in this regard), not more power, IMO.

Yes, he was a great combination puncher, but I think he has a few examples of guys getting blitzed with one punch, or the first punch of a combination.gambler49 wrote:Tyson mostly ended them wiv a combo. Sorry chap, I normally like ur posts. But here I think ur wrong.
BTW, glad to hear that someone likes my posts.

Well, power is speed and mass, so I don't really think we're too far off here.Goodnight, Irene wrote:I understand, but Tyson's KO's were swifter as a result of velocity (much better than Foreman, in this regard), not more power, IMO.
It would have been interesting to see a few others in the list, because there have been some hellacious punchers just during my time as a fan. And a lot of them never really made it anywehere near the top of the division.
Re: Hardest Puncher.
I would have added Shavers to that list. He stamina suck, but his punching power was up there with all of the previous mention.

Thanks. He was one I was alluding to. I think he's the hardest puncher I've ever seen.Idisagree wrote:I would have added Shavers to that list. He stamina suck, but his punching power was up there with all of the previous mention.
Re: Hardest Puncher.
How would you guys rate Sonny Liston on the power scale in relation to the other names already mentioned?
Maybe we can track down Albert Westphal and get his opinion.![[icon_e_biggrin.gif] :D](./images/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif)

Re: Hardest Puncher.
Of these guys, I believe Foreman was clearly the harder puncher but its noted by many boxers that Shavers was the hardest hitting heavyweight.

He's got grandkids in that arena still trying to wake him from his slumber.
Re: Hardest Puncher.
I went with Big George from this bunch.

Sonny renamed him "Quickphal."
Re: Hardest Puncher.
For me out that group:
1. Mike Tyson
2. George Foreman
3. Max Baer
4. Rocky Marciano
5. Lennox Lewis
However, the number one hardest puncher in term of brutal KO power is Mr. Ernie Shavers.

Sonny would certainly belong in any list of the hardest punching HWs.yancey wrote:How would you guys rate Sonny Liston on the power scale in relation to the other names already mentioned?

That's why I included him in this and voted for him.ecto55 wrote:Max Baer- easy IMO.
What makes me think Baer hits hardest among that list is that in his day he was recognised as a harder single shot puncher than Louis, and was able to cause the deaths of two fighters in doing so.
Ive read that his whole jovial manner was a coping mechanism for having killed in the ring, I'm also trying to find the article where one the opponents he killed was autopsied and the medical examination revealed the Baer punches had ripped the sheared the opponents brain from the membrane that attaches it to the inside of the skull. Thats brute power.
