I will. I do it mostly for the enjoyment of the sport but I also like to get some compensation to help with the costs of covering in an event that's 3 hrs away and for the travel meals. I'd like to get credited not so much for a personal recognition but more so that others know that an event is covered and they can show their support by clicking on my article since that's the only way I get compensated monetarily. i.e. DC Amateur Boxing posted the results of the National Golden Gloves off of my site and onto his blog site with a link referring to my site. That helped out tremendously as that directed a lot of hits to my site. I don't mind if anybody uses whatever I write or take pictures of for whatever 'legal' purposes as long as there's some recognition for the work.
(P.S. Honestly I can do this without any monetary earnings.. but try to explain this to your wife when she has to share her time with boxing especially when it comes at a cost financially? lol The monetary relief from the viewership on my articles helps comfort her a little for her to see that this isn't just an expensive hobby. )
I'm going off on a tangent about promoting amateur boxing on the web here.....
The great thing about the web unlike retail businesses where a customer would choose either or... coke or pepsi. One loses. But on the web... one customer could view as many websites and everybody wins. The internet encourages the idea of 'passing it along'. If we all set up our own website or web page use Google AdSense and we all visited each others site... you be amazed with what we can achieve as a boxing community. Amateur boxing would gain a tremendous amount of attention on the web (which may displace or integrate with television in the future) and participants would make the most of their time on the internet financially for something you're already doing for free. (No longer will your spouse think you're wasting time on the net when you get a check in the mail.)
I know that the amateur boxing community members at the grassroot level would use whatever extra income they have on boxing for boxing club travels, boxing club's equipment, or maybe some of the coaches would earn enough to do boxing full time. I've come to know many members of the amateur boxing community to be self-less, giving, and charitable for the young amateur boxers. My goal is to educate many members of the boxing community to become more entrepreneurial to grow the sport. The best part about the web is that nobody in the boxing community pays a financial cost for what we can do. Example: Back in the days.. people would video an amateur boxing bout and sell the videos to whoever wanted a copy. So the boxer in that video may pay for a video he was in. Now, thanks to the internet, the video would be uploaded on YouTube and the boxer can view anytime for free. When that YouTube channel gains a lot of viewership, advertisers would pay the owner of the channel for a space on their channel. So the one who is doing the work of attending the events and recording the videos will not be compensated financially by the boxer but by the advertisers.... as long as the boxer continues to view his videos.
I apologize if this sounds like an infomercial... lol

We do it for the love of the sport. Getting paid changes that in everything in life.....just saying. Our wives girlfreinds and family deal with us and our crazy time we put into this sport as coach, fan, or fighter cause they know thats who we are and thats what we do. Real people that love you will put up with it and understand. Can I get a witness? God Bless! 8)

I understand the heart of what you're saying. However, it's greed that corrupts. You can't blame money but only to the person who gives power to it and allow themselves to get possessed by it. I'm sure many people here would love to quit their day jobs if they could get paid the same amount to do nothing but boxing. I'm not talking about becoming a millionaire... I'm talking about a regular living where your job would be to just train boxers at the boxing gym. That's the crux of this... how much of a better trainer could you be if you didn't have a job apart from boxing that hinders you from traveling or spending more time with the boxers. Knowing many of the members in this community... I would see them be happy just doing that rather than becoming a self-indulgent ambitious opportunist. I hope nobody took that from the initial post.coachingGOLD wrote:We do it for the love of the sport. Getting paid changes that in everything in life.....just saying. If it comes down to it, nothing should come before God and your family... not even boxing. I'm sure many may disagree. I wouldn't sacrifice my wife and son for my own enjoyment in anything. Real people wouldn't put themselves before their family. I can attest that even God wouldn't want you to choose anything over your family. That's why it's important for the family to move together as one.
Grace and peace.

Well as I said. They put up with us. We dont put things above or in front of our family. In fact many times me and many included have trained a fighter for 5 weeks and on fight day someone from family is ill we dont travel and work the fight. That goes without saying. Just saying it changes things in anything.

Thanks for the 108 & 178 Great Lakes info. I edited my prior post w/ the new info which is now complete for Region 5.
Re: 2010 U.S Championship - Teams / Favorites
Thanks everybody for Region 5. This is always a tough region as they combine 6 or more GG franchises. Fighters are always left out such as Jekabson (201) Smith (123) and Adams (141) unless they are going through some other way. Anybody know? Demetrius Banks and Paul Parker might surprise some people this year.
Re: 2010 U.S Championship - Teams / Favorites
Jekabson did not box in the regionals due to an injury. Smith did not box in the LBC tourney and thus did not go to the regionals. Adams was at the regionals, but lost in the finals. I have no idea if any of them have another ticket to the U.S. Championships.
Region 5 is always tough. Banks and Parker are both good boxers.

Now Jekabson can apply for an ATL bid right?Dennis wrote:Jekabson did not box in the regionals due to an injury. Smith did not box in the LBC tourney and thus did not go to the regionals. Actually it would be an Independent slot, not an At Large. At Large spots are for boxers who were competing/traveling for Team USA and missed their LBC or Regional tournament.

You are right Dennis. I don't think that many people understand the definition of " AT LARGE." Zeddie lost to Robert Easter in the finals of the region 5 tourney. Ashley Gartland said that they were having a meeting yesterday to go over the independent applications. Zeddie has applied. I'm not sure about Gary Russell. I was hoping to see a match up between these two.
Re: 2010 U.S Championship - Teams / Favorites
ZMOMMI - USAB doesn't list the criteria they use for the independent slots nor do they say how many are available. Are they going to give out one per weight class, 10 total - not necessarily the same # per weight class or say up to 5 per weight class? How many boxers applied for the spots? That would be interesting to know too. Good luck to Zeddie.

Re: 2010 U.S Championship - Teams / Favorites
Well this is a funny time in being this close that they havent posted qualification process to make the 2012 team. We are all in the same boat as coaches and family that put everything into our fighters.....Time, Money, heart and soul and prayers. It would be nice to just know what we gotta do. I think more will just turn pro soon if they wait longer and longer to post.
Re: 2010 U.S Championship - Teams / Favorites
where do you get the Independen Slot Application from?Dennis wrote:ZMOMMI - USAB doesn't list the criteria they use for the independent slots nor do they say how many are available. Re: 2010 U.S Championship - Teams / Favorites
Ashley did provide me with the criteria for At Large and for Independent slots. After all regions have submitted their rosters, USAB looks at how many openings there are. USAB then goes over the applications that boxers have made to fill the openings. Ashley did not tell me how many spots were available at 141, but she did say that there were openings. USAB then looks over each boxers past experience at nationals, international competition and so on. Ashley said that we should know who is going to fill various slots by the end of the week. I guess it is up to USAB as far as who they want to pick to fill the independent spots. I don't think that anyone qualifies for At Large status for this tourney.thecoach wrote:where do you get the Independen Slot Application from?Dennis wrote:ZMOMMI - USAB doesn't list the criteria they use for the independent slots nor do they say how many are available. Ballard the 165 from the DC area got an "At Larger" Bid. So what are you saying about this process because obviously these bids are being handed out or the article got it wrong.
