Post by KW1 »

Just bit bored and was thinking of fighters who smoke and still maintain boxing career, i can think of mayorga , who apparently smokes like a chimney, james toney (cigars) and kirkland laing who smoked the herbal variety.

Monzon was a chain smoker. Dave McAuley also smoked.

Eamon Magee.

Bruno admitted to smoking a spliff after every fight to unwind. Did John Murray say something about smoking weed as well? And of course, mike tyson tested positive for it.

Benn would have a crafty fag on and off but wouldnt class himself a "smoker".

Daniel Zaragoza smoked, and Mayorga.

Going back a bit, world champ Lionel Rose smoked a pipe

Forget Darcy, Carruthers or Fenech, Rose is the greatest Australian fighter ever. He had the cruel misfortune as world champion to run into a 52-0 Ruben Olivares in Los Angeles, and Olivares ruined him.
Olivares, of course, is one of the greatest Mexican fighters ever.

I think its a sad indictment on this country that the award of "Pipe Smoker of the Year" was discontinued in 2004. (Thatchers Britain, eh?)

For reference, here is the "parade of champions" people who are considered to be exceptional pipe smokers appear in bold.

1964 Rupert Davies
1965 Tobias Rutherford
1966 Andrew Cruikshank
1967 Warren Mitchell
1968 Peter Cushing
1969 Jack Hargreaves
1970 Eric Morecambe
1971 Lord Shinwell
1973 Frank Muir
1974 Fred Trueman
1975 Campbell Adamson
1976 Harold Wilson (Pipeman of the Decade)
1977 Brian Barnes
1978 Magnus Magnusson
1979 J. B. Priestley
1980 Edward Fox
1981 Martina Navratilova
1982 Dave Lee Travis
1983 Patrick Moore
1984 Henry Cooper
1985 Jimmy Greaves
1986 David Bryant
1987 Barry Norman
1988 Ian Botham
1989 Jeremy Brett
1990 Laurence Marks
1991 John Harvey-Jones
1992 Tony Benn
1993 Rod Hull
1994 Ranulph Fiennes
1995 Jethro
1996 Colin Davis
1997 Malcolm Bradbury
1998 Willie John McBride
1999 Trevor Baylis
2000 Joss Ackland
2001 Russ Abbot
2002 Richard Dunhill[2]

Its 'interesting' that there has only ever been 1 boxing pipe smoker of the year (Pipe Smoker of the Year, or PSotY, is my new 'thing' by the way, and won't be going away) but 2 cricketers have had the honour.
