Overrated fights
Overrated fights
These are fights that were highly anticipated and that everybody expected to be exciting, action-filled matches, but turned out to be duds.
I'll start with an early one whose 100th anniversary was July 4: Johnson-Jeffries. This fight was highly anticipated as the "Fight of the Century" and was the biggest boxing match thus far in the history of the sport. But, as it turned out, Jeffries had nothing following a six-year layoff and Johnson won every rounds except, possibly, the fourth when Jeffries made a bit of a rally. Not only was it one-sided, with Johnson dominating the last eleven rounds, it was boring - with numerous clinches and holding by both men.

Dempsey-Carpentier.
The fight came with huge hype but was really one way traffic for the most part.
Georges wasnt strong enough to hang in there with Jack.

Lewis/Holyfield 1- Horrible fight, even worse decision.
As for romanticized fights that I think are overrated.

It was heavily hyped but I don't recall anyone saying it was a good fight.Idisagree wrote:DLH - Trinidad
Edit . . I just read the first post. The topic then should be DISSAPOINTING FIGHTS . . under-rated implies that people say the fight was actually good.

This is going to cause a stir, but I'm going to have to say...
HAGLER-HEARNS!
Of course it was brutal, of course it was exciting, but a lot of people will tell you it was the greatest fight of all time. For me, ultimately it was too one-sided to be even close to that accolade. Hearns fought hard from the off, but there was never any giant swing of momentum, they didn't trade knockdowns, the finish didn't come out of nowhere, and you weren't left with the feeling that there was unfinished business at the end of it - all ingredients of many other "great fights".

Re: Overrated fights
Gotta disagree with all of that except that I don't think it was one of the absolute greatest fights of all time. There definitely wasn't anything one sided about it.
Re: Overrated fights
Momentum swing happened in the first round but after that Hearns was putting more into his left hook than his right which told you he was in trouble.
Don't forget the nasty cut Hagler had too.
The weekend after the fight Henry Cooper, writing for one of the tabloids, said that he felt the fight was disappointing because Hearns didn't box Hagler which is what he needed to do to win.
Unsettled business? I have always felt that Hearns would have won rematches with Leonard (probably did) and Hagler (robbed of his chance). Hearsn would never have fought that way (and probably not have broken his hand) a second time and who knows what the result would have been.

For all the massive hype, Louis v Schmeling II was never going to be a great fight. Louis had won 11 straight, was World Champion with 3 defenses under his belt, and Schmeling, who had pulled a big upset in the 1st fight, was 2 yrs older and pushing 33.

Does anyone call that a great fight, though? I've never heard it.Seamus wrote:For all the massive hype, Louis v Schmeling II was never going to be a great fight. Yep Im tired of hearing it called the "greatest 3 round fight ever".oliverfennell wrote:This is going to cause a stir, but I'm going to have to say...

Of course the anticipation was incredible before the fight and the first round was tremendous one of the best in boxing history no doubt. But the second and 3rd do not belong in the same category in my opinion. Hearns had shot his bolt and the drama of the cut aside Hagler had taken over.
Oliver when you say something like this there are always going to be some who will bristle at your impudence, but I know exactly what you mean.
To me it was a real anticlimax that there was never a rematch, and not just as I am a Hearns fan. The first round was undoubtedly incredible for those journalists watching ringside as historically any boxing match was always more real and violent in person up close and personal.
But HD tv has really bought the true ringside boxing experience into the home to some extent. I would love to see Hagler and Hearns in HD so you could hear the gloves smacking!
Re: Overrated fights
I always felt Norton-Holmes was way overrated. A good fight for sure and an exicting last couple of rounds but no way is it on of the greatest heavyweight fight of all time.

Really? I thought it was a great fight. Norton got off to a bit of a slow start, but there were several really good rounds. With the possible exception of the first two Holyfield-Bowe fights, I haven't seen a better heavyweight fight since then and that was more than 30 years ago.

..not over rated after the fight, but louis/conn II was one of the great disappointments....

I always felt that Hagler-Hearns was overrated. It was a cracking fight but not one of the greatest fights of all time, in my opinion. Hearns was all punched out after the first round and wobbling around like a new-born giraffe. It wasn't pretty.

Wow, I'd STRONGLY disagree with that one, but to each his own . .Counter-puncher wrote:round for round i thought the Witherspoon fight was better.Ambling Alp wrote:Really? Winky Wright-Felix Trinidad. So one sided, was a dud.raylawpc wrote:These are fights that were highly anticipated and that everybody expected to be exciting, action-filled matches, but turned out to be duds.
Re: Overrated fights
Barrera-Morales trilogy. I don't argue the action and I am sure most people on here loved those fights, but for some reason they just did not entertain me. When 2 guys are literally hitting each other at will, and you are watching knowing that there is no chance for a KO, that kills the suspense for me. I hate watching a fight knowing it is going to the cards.
