Heavy-Ali, Louis,Foreman
Light Heavy-Spinks, Charles, Tunney
Middle-Monzon, Hagler, Greb
Welter-Robinson, Leonard, Armstrong
Light-Duran,Gans, Leonard
Feather-Sanchez,Pep,Saddler
Bantam-Jofre,Harada,Zarate
Fly-Wilde,Perez,Lynch
Picking the three featherweights and the three middleweights were the easiest for me.
Light heavy and bantam were the hardest. You could have easily picked three different guys for each of these weight classes.
Light Heavy-Spinks, Charles, Tunney
Middle-Monzon, Hagler, Greb

Re: Top 3 Fighters in these divisions? (non-current)
Not all. Two or three years ago there was a topic about rating the featherweights. Armstrong was not nearly as good at featherweight as he was at lightweight and welterweight. He lost several times at that weight class. He is barely top 10 at featherweight.
Of course now people are going to freak out and say how can you say that about Henry Armstrong. I don't think a lot of people actually look at what a fighter did at a certain weight class. They know someone was great and fought at several weight classes annd just assume they were as good at the lower weight class as the higher. That is clearly not the case here.

Re: Top 3 Fighters in these divisions? (non-current)
To do this, I picked the top fighter from (a) pre-Dempsey era; (b) post-Dempsey era to 1960; and 1960 through 1980s.
Thus, my selections are in no particular order:
Heavyweight:
Jim Jeffries
Joe Louis
Muhammad Ali
Light-heavyweight:
Sam Langford
Gene Tunney
Bob Foster
Middleweight:
Bob Fitzsimmons
Ray Robinson
Carlos Monzon
Welterweight:
Joe Walcott
Ray Robinson
Jose Napoles
Lightweight:
Kid Lavigne
Benny Leonard
Roberto Duran
Featherweight:
George Dixon
Willie Pep
Alexis Arguello
Bantamweight:
George Dixon
Manuel Ortiz
Ruben Olivares
Flyweight:
Jimmy Wilde
Pascual Perez
Miguel Canto

Ray, in many ways your methodology is the best approach to this exercise.raylawpc wrote:To do this, I picked the top fighter from (a) pre-Dempsey era; (b) post-Dempsey era to 1960; and 1960 through 1980s.
