Most Pathetic Corner Work

I cannot speak to how good Lou Duva was in training camps, but to me his corner work is mediocre at best. He is such a drama queen in the corner. He spends half the time screaming at the ref and complaining. If I was in a big fight and I came back to my corner between rounds I wouldn't want to sit there and listen to him scream. I don't think that does a fighter any good at all.

As far as the Taylor fight in particular, I guess I have been convinced that they didn't do the worst thing before the 12th round. Still Duva has always rubbed me the wrong way. Although he seems like a good guy in interviews.

How is Lou doing? Ever hear or see anything from him anymore? He is 88 now, and the last thing I see about him online is from around 2007.

88 huh? So that means he must have been 68 when he charged Roger Mayweather to start a bloody brawl, and 74 when he got Knocked TFO during the Bowe Golota brawl.........that's what i always loved about Lou.....his tremendous sense of dignity and grace.

He is a fair guy, I still wouldnt mess with him. He was in a corner recently (cant remember who, but it was because he was great at getting the ref's attention). Did he post on here?

Always look for the guy playing to the camera. When you watch a trainer at work between rounds, just observe carefully and ask yourself - how conscious is this guy of the cameras and mics, how much of his behaviour is influenced by the presence of these?
To be fair, i think the best trainer would have a hard time blocking out the tv audience, but Manny Steward always seems to be totally oblivious, does not raise his voice for the mic to pick him up and always seems to be focused solely on his fighter.
Gotta mention Rooney's work with Tyson too, although that was before the age of the ppv, when the temptation was not so big.

I think Angelo enjoyed the attention as well to be honest. Eddy Futch was very good, you hardly notice Nacho Berstein, Jimmy Tibbs does his job and doesn't give a homily or a tap dance post fight; Kevin Rooney wasn't as flamboyant as others. It is a personal preference; both of the trainer and the fan. Some people enjoy the limelight and some people (boxing fans) appreciate people who are low key. :)

Very good point. There is a clear jealousy and bitterness in Atlas. I sincerely beleive he had the talent but mental issues with the ring prevented him turnig pro rather than anything physical.

And i beleive thats why he always loves to play the amateur shrink always questioning other fighters "character" and "heart" and "fortitude" in his endless but entertaining similes.

I also dont like the way he has dined out on the Tyson episode for 30 years.

Juan Roldan's corner V Hagler. He was being systematically beaten in the later rounds yet all they could say was "keep doing what you're doing" and "don't give up". Not exactly the best strategic advice ever given but Roldan followed it anyway

Theres been lots of ineptitude Im sure.
However, Gil Clancy and his crew in Jerry Quarrys corner when he fought Ken Norton was a disgrace in my opinion.
I dont know about instruction, but they let Jerry get the sh.t kicked out of him in the fourth and fifth rounds.
They should have pulled him out of there.
Every punch Norton threw,hit Quarry on the chin.Jerry was game as always, but that just meant taking more shots and Clancy should have known that.
It always pissed me off how much of a beating he took in that fight.
Lobianco finally shut it down after Jerry was shelled with another combo in the fifth.
Jerrys corner was standing around.

I had one corner in particular in mind when I started this thread and I was waiting to see if anyone brought it up.

If I was Chris Byrd's father/trainer, I would tell that damn wife of his to 'go sit down and shut the hell up'. She comes up the ring stairs in nearly every fight and screams over Mr. Byrd while he is giving instructions. She screams complete nonsense. In the 2nd Klitschko fight "He's jabbin' and grabbin' you Chris!" Yeah, in between the murderous right hands he almost killed your husband with. I cannot believe any trainer would let that go on, whether they are family or not.

The worst was the Wlad rematch when Tracy kept screaming at her former middleweight husband to "keep coming forward!" while Byrd was getting nailed with right hands and jabs while he stood right in front of Klitschko in the pocket. Not only was it terrible advice, but how could you be screaming at your significant other to 'come forward' while they are getting absolutely pounded on!!!

Also agree about Duva . . for such a highly touted trainer I found his advice in the corners of every fight I've seen him in very amateurish and repetitive. I swear the only thing he ever said to Tua when he worked with him was "David, you have to go in there and punch" . . .wow Lou, so a boxer has to go into a boxing match and punch? I had no idea . . .

Good point. None of us have ever been President so we shouldn't talk about politics. None of us have coached in a Superbowl, so we shouldn't talk about a coaches decisions in a game. Come to think of it, I have never been a chef, so if I don't like that taste of food at a restaurant I shouldn't discuss that either.

If only fighters and chief seconds posted on boxrec this would be a lonely board.
