Classic Fights not given enough credit

Kessler v Froch was a good one.

I've never seen a poor Froch fight, his fights are nearly always exciting. I'd maybe exclude the Dirrell fight, as that got a bit tedious at times.
The Froch - Pascal fight is a very good shout!
I thought the Chavez Jr - Duddy fight about month back was a cracker myself. It never got the credit it deserved due to the hate campaign out against Chavez Jr.

90% of Carl Thompson fights.

Ensley Bingham v Gilbert Jackson

Re: Classic Fights not given enough credit
great call. it gets overshadowed by the vazquez-marquez rivalry but it was a stunning turnaround from vazquez, who stopped gonzalez after taking a terrible, and punishing, boxing lesson.Chambers2 wrote:Israel Vazquez Vs Jhonny Gonzalez
also, i recall most of the boxreccers hyping up guzman v barrios, from the same card (the stacked MAB-juarez 2 show), and raving about guzman the night after. i picked vazquez v gonzalez to be the fight of the night, and was right.
Re: Classic Fights not given enough credit
The first Hobson Maccarinelli fight was an absolute cracker.

Frankie Liles vs Tim Littles - undercard to Naz-Alicea in Newcastle. An unexpected 3 round up and downer. Classic.
Either that or Akinwande-Welch.

Wayne Alexander KO 3 Paul Samules was a small hall classic. Both unbeaten punchers meeting for the vacant Brit middle title, and it was bombs away.

Got to agree on Lewis-Vitali. No heavyweight title fight comes close to it in the last decade (maybe Wladimir-Sanders for pure drama). Hamed-Kelley too. That fight just about personified Naz in 20 minutes.
I always thought Barrera-Morales III was underrated especially due to the fact, after Pacquiao's utter dominace over him the year before, nobody expected that level of performance from Barrera. Perhaps funny to say considering he had a win over Pacquaio in his next fight, but it was arguably Morales's last great performance too.
De La Hoya-Vargas is rarely mentioned anymore but I think that one lived up to the hype. Does anyone remember the BBC's woeful coverage of the fight, with pretty much Adrian Chiles first forray into sports presenting , as they dipped their toes back into televised boxing? It was so bad it almost overshadowed such a brilliant fight.
Mayweather-Castillo I maybe.
Bit of a sidebar, and maybe considered sacrilege, but I never really understood why the Gatti-Ward rematches were held in such high regard. I always considered them, although action packed, on balance fairly one-sided drubbings.

DLH-vargas must have been a massive PPV success, so it might be too big a fight to go underated.SheffieldSteel wrote:Got to agree on Lewis-Vitali. MAB-morales 3, believe it or not, was hailed as one of the best fights of modern times by the likes of michael katz - apparently because it had some of the 1st fight's intensity plus some excellent skills.
lewis-vitali is a bit underrated as an exciting spectacle. it seems most media (at least in america) focused on the fact that vitali might have won if he hadn't been cut. rather than celebrate a bloody and exciting fight.
Re: Classic Fights not given enough credit
Kendall Holt vs Ricardo Torres was a great one rounder, as was Benn vs Barkley.

Foreman Vs Lyle
DLH Vs Quartey
Brodie Vs Chi I
Oakey Vs Francis
Lennox Vs Briggs

Re: Classic Fights not given enough credit
Tua-Ibeabuchi is a quality shout.
Tyson-Douglas, although held in high esteem due to the nature of the result, is another gripping fight.
Miguel Cotto has been in some absolute crackers. His fights with Corley and Judah are high class.
Also think Khan/Limond is a class fight. Bit one sided early on but it's high drama once Limind gets into it.
Dodson/Quigley is a classic. Had the pleasure of viewing that live and it was a wonderful feeling. These two need to rematch ASAP

Re: Classic Fights not given enough credit
Leeonzer Barber v Nicky Piper was a good fight, Piper was a round away from winning due to eye damage , but got caught with a huge shot.
Re: Classic Fights not given enough credit
Dean Francis & Mark Baker was pretty good.
Baker also had a couple of small hall classics with Sven Hamer & Mark Delaney.
Richard Williams/Paul Samuels II
I've not seen Crawford Ashley/Nicky Piper since it was on TV but that was pretty high paced and entertaining.

Gairy St-Clair vs Diego Corrales was a very intresting blend of styles that made a hell of a fight
Re: Classic Fights not given enough credit
it was pretty tough and i had it closer than many writers did. it would have been a classic if st clair had some power.alexpaterson wrote:Gairy St-Clair vs Diego Corrales was a very intresting blend of styles that made a hell of a fight
Re: Classic Fights not given enough credit
i reckon carl thompos v terry dunstan maybe doesn't get the credit it deserves, because it's been seen by so few ppl, at least in its entirity. i've got the long highlights, with an early TV commentating role by steve bunce, and it's an amazing fight. obviously, in its truncated form, it loses the come from behind drama that you often get with thompson's fights. doesn't get mentioned as often as thompson-sellers, thompson-rothmann and the 2 with eubank for the WBO title.
also, thompson v akim tafer. thompson in interviews calls this his hardest fight. yet ppl seldom mention this battle. tafer had, or would, challenge a world champion and do fairly well. thompson got a very tough night, away from home, for the european title. really got battered and outclassed, with heavy, correct shots from the beastly tafer. and turned it around midway. i think it was only televised in europe (think i've seen french and/or german broadcasts) so it doesn't get much mention on here or in magazines.

You might even call it the greatest late replacement fight....ever ?SheffieldSteel wrote:Got to agree on Lewis-Vitali. No heavyweight title fight comes close to it in the last decade (maybe Wladimir-Sanders for pure drama)
When it was touted a week or two before, it seemed almost unbelievable: a near heavyweight superfight, put together on 2 weeks notice.
It was looking like one of those fights that was never gonna happen...
Best HW fight of recent times is probably one of the Bowe/Holyfields....1st ? And Holyfield/Tyson 1 was a classic.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Froch beats Abraham, the Super Six wouldn't be the same without him.
