He avoided Calzaghe and beat a faded Eubank and Benn, and spent the rest of his career screaming for Jones Jr (who would have hammered him over 12). He fought some good guys though, in fairness

That said, great chin, nice chap.....good fighter.

Matt- re the watson fight. obvously i have watched it over and over again. rds1-4, McCallum misses almost nothing. Its fcking eery how accurate he is and how well he anticipates Watson's movements etiehr offensive or defensive.
Yeah, and some rounds he starts off with a left hook to the body. It's almost poetry to watch at times.
Not almost - IT IS poetry.

McCallum is achingly underrated - he never really got the fights to shine against the biggest names, like Leonard, Hagler and Hearns. I'd have picked him over Hearns, due to Thomas' shaky beard and McCallum's own cast iron one, and the fact that Hearns was always open to be tagged when throwing his own shots.

Hagler - well that would have been an extremely interesting fight, given that Hagler had real problems with Duran, who was also a sneaky counterpunching type, and a naturally smaller man, well, let's just say a tough nights work.

Think Leonard would have been too quick and too savvy, but no great humbling not being up to beating Leonard now is there.
There's a quote from Tommy and Manny around the time that Mike was a Kronk fighter, how that Mike was much more naturally gifted and he would say ok, drop the right hand 3 times when he does this and he did it, without even having to practice. Tommy says sheesh...how did he do that? He could never get it. McClellan also did the same thing, lays the right hand 3 times.

Mike to me could out-Kronk the Kronk fighter in Tommy et al - He would dangle that left arm to sucker you in and jab, left hook and right hand.

The sucker feint to the body he lays on Curry before the KO is sublime - He throws it twice, lands and Curry brings down his right arm to protect the body and 3rd time, boom he feints then throws it to the head. Mike said he felt that shot all the way down his left arm to his left toe.

When Collins did the dinner show in Cardiff, Calzaghe was obviously brought up during the Q&A session and a member of the audience asked Collins why the fight never materialised and he said something along the lines of 'I'm Irish, not stupid'. :OhYes:

I like what you post usually Mugabi I have to respectfully disagree with the point you made that Collins fought and beat Eubank and Benn at their 'peak' I would say that a weight drained Eubank who completed his daft 'world tour' and Benn who was massively shot would have beaten Collins without too much difficulty in their primes.

Collins was a fighter in the right place at the right time. He didn't distinuish himself as champion - didn't he defend against Cornelius Carr?

Collins was what he was - a good, tough, middleweight contender who would have never been champion a decade earlier.
Hi Carlos. Sorry its my fault I was a bit lazy typing with the peak description of Eubanks like you rightly corrected me he was burnt out on his world tour but what i was trying to say but made a mess of was he was still a bit more useful than the weight drained one Joe beat. Likewise you're spot on Benn was no where near his peak he was mentally totally shot. Anyway thanks for the heads up

Steward said Mike was the most naturally talented figher he ever had. Given his outstanding stable, that is some accolade.

If he'd been moved better, McCallum could have had an even better career than he did.

If you wanted to insult Steve Collins, asking that question would be a good way to go about it :TU:

I like Collins, one of my favourite fighters growing up, he also had a go at the crowd booing Benn in their rematch if I remember rightly too

Yes, definitely not a good idea and I'm sure he'd punch anyone that mentions a paint spray gun one more time.

Yes, It was some of the thickos from Benn's own following that started to boo him when he quit on his stool. This was a fighter who gave fans everything in every single fight and when he had nothing left to give, these f*ckers started booing him. Collins did the right thing that night by talking to these callous fans before celebrating his victory. :TU:

Surely you are not that stupid to be reeled in by every lame, half arsed attempt to rile you concerning an Irish boxer and their nationality.

No need for you to make this point is there?

I read somewhere you are a veternarian. I assume from that you are a bright guy - it would be nice if you acted like one in regards stupid comments. :TU:
