post 1980 British P4P top ten....

Post by dekker88 »

i would say all time but i'm only gonna include boxers i've watched myself and whose career's i'm familiar with....and as i was 7 yrs old in 1980 i think that's a reasonable cut off...

1 Lennox Lewis
2 Joe Calzaghe
3 Naz Hamed
4 Ricky Hatton
5 David Haye (for his CW achievements)
6 Lloyd Honeyghan
7 Chris Eubank
8 Nigel Benn
9 Amir Khan
10 Frank Bruno

Pretty good, but not sure about the last two.

I would be more inclined to consider - Hope, Minter, Andries, and maybe Robinson over them (currently).

Its close but for accomplishments, I'd be inclined to swap Hatton and Hamed (very close though).

those last two were pretty difficult to nail down....there's a lot that could be there....i put amir in because of the age when he won the title and the fact that he appears to be mixing with the elite already...

and big frank is in because of his excellent comedy laugh.

I would be tempted to put Honeyghan above Haye as i think that Lloyds win over Don Curry far exceeds any win on Hayes record.

Not a bad list.

I'd have Khan at no 2 though, or level with Lennox.

3. Hatton
4. Benn
5. Honeyghan
6. Hamed
7. Andries
8. Eubank
9. Froch
10. Bruno

I think honeyghans win over curry was the single best win by a british fighter ever, nobody gave him even a slight chance but he totally dominated curry and finished him as a top class fighter

It's got to be up there hasn't it? I guess the only question mark over it is how much Curry was affected by making the weight. Either way it's surely out of that and the first fight between Turpin and Robinson. Stracey's win in Mexico was a bit special as well.

Also Herbie Hide won the world title twice to Big Franks only once out of his 4 attempts.

Herbies the naturally smaller man also... :box:

Hide never beat anyone good though.

Bruno's best performance in either victory or defeat was against Lewis..... after that it was probably one of his other losses too.

Other than Bowe I can't see Bruno losing to anyone Hide faced, though he might have a bit of bother with Vitali before getting the job done.

Vitali would have taken care of Bruno IMO.

You could make a case for Robin Reid in the No.10 slot.

WBC Super Middleweight Champ, with four successful defences etc.

He may have been shot to shit by the end of his career, but don't forget what he achieved.

Let's also remember who he achieved it against though. Reid never had a really decent world-class victory to his name - his best performance was in the loss to Calzaghe and his loss to Malinga remains one of the worst 'world title' fights I've ever witnessed.

1. Lennox Lewis
2. Joe Calzaghe
3. Naz
4. Ricky Hatton
5. Nigel Benn
6. Barry McGuigan
7. David Haye
8. Chris Eubank
9. Lloyd Honeyghan
10. Duke McKenzie

This kind of list is very subjective but I can't believe Hamed is as low as 6th on some peoples lists. There is a very strong argument he should be in ahead of Calzaghe.

McGuigan is too high. He was very popular, but his career really wasn't very special. I say he would be lucky to make top 10. Haye too high for me also. He needs to beat a top boy at heavyweight. Cruiserweight was a very weak division.
