A bit late to find this thread but i'm still reeling at Bunceys suggestion that Ron Stander would NOT win a world title today.
Amongst his victims was one Thad Spencer who's resume includes victories over Bodell, Brian London, Ernie Terrell, Doug Jones (who lost by decision to Ali and beat Zora Folley and Bob Foster in back to back fights). So the man beat the man who beat fighters who were in a queue at a time when there was a plethora of heavyweight talent.
Although it's clear that Ron was a fill in fight when he was KO'd by Joe Frazier, who one fight later danced to the tune of Foremans bombs, he had at least engineered a position whereby opportunities came his way. He did get to fight for a world title.
Need a comparison?
Oliver Mccall, who gained a reputation as a puncher despite having plenty of decisions and a couple of losses in his first thirty fights won the world title and defended it successfully against Larry Holmes.
So fast forward to today, when a well managed Derek Chisora gets within a whisker of fighting for the big one, where Audley Harrison gets a title shot and tell me that Ron Stander wouldn't have a chance.
Still not convinced? Who was the first person to KO big punching Earnie Shavers? Yep, it was Ron Stander
