Isn't the "The Independent" a "respectable" newspaper? Where do you begin when trying to explain boxing to someone like this?

I don't really get what her point is, apart from the fact she doesn't like the SPORT of boxing. The Mike Tyson reference is unnecessary and bizarre, but he raped a woman twenty years ago so it's okay to just throw his name in despite him being just one man in the long history of boxing, even though he served his time and has never been in similar trouble since. Whether it was long enough is different matter, but I don't see why she mentioned him at all, but I'm sure it made some readers prick their ears up. A poor article written by someone who clearly has no clue what they're talking about.

Isn't the "The Independent" a "respectable" newspaper? Where do you begin when trying to explain boxing to someone like this?

I guess it would help to know a bit about Julie Burchill, i'm an admirer of her past writings even though not this particular article..it's cool though as not every one likes Boxing or see's it beyond 2 men beating the shit out of each other.

Only thing that interested me was knowing who the pop singer she mentioned that went to see the boxing with Madonna.

Some years back I had a heated debate with an American girl popstar friend who had always lectured me mercilessly about animal rights and the evils of meat-eating. I was amazed when I read a magazine account of her and Madonna making beasts of themselves at a boxing match

I quite like the Independent overall, but viewspaper is a good description and I think they have writers on both ends of the scale. Sam Wallace is someone I enjoy reading. The papers iPhone app is free and pretty good, and they do seem to cover more boxing than most of the other nationals. Can't say I think much of this particular piece though.

Got to tell yous this story only because of its reference to porn , This guy i've met lots of times in the pub , he's not a mate but is very interested in boxing and if he's in the pub always likes to talk boxing .

Anyway he knows another mate and came over talking , tellingf us how depressed he is bla bla , cos he can't get a job . or keep one , his missis is sick of him drinking and losing jobs ect ect .

Meets him again a couple weeks later , he's really depressed his wife kicked him out . so he tells us the story .

Apparantly a few days after we last met , he scored a very well paid job in the mines , but they are no drink tolerance , so knowing he's going away 3 weeks on 2 weeks off , he has a bender the night before he starts ,
Shows up at the office to be drove to the airport, but they breathalize them all , HE FAILS , still half pissed from the night before .

They tell him to go home he's lost the job before he even starts ,

Said he went home , and was watching tv before the wife gets home, having a beer , trying to think how he's gonna get out of this one , . Anyway , he reckons he starts feeling horny , and goes gets a porn film his missis did'nt know he had , she don't agree with them either apparantly .
Reckons he's watching the movie , having a good old tugg , and you guessed it , his missis walks in with her workmate , they came home for lunch She goes beserk and kicks him out , I'm trying not to laugh while this poor facker is telling me all this , feeling sorry for him .

Meet the guy about a month later and he's happy has Larry , i asked if he got back with his missis of 20 odd years , and he says No , i met this big fat ugly chick and moved in with her , , I said whats good about that ,

He said she's got loads of kids does'nt work , drinks piss all day , and loves watching Porn , he reckons he's in heaven

Yes, for those who don't know Julie Burchill, for the last 25 years at least she has been living off the reputation she forged as a young writer (NME, I think).

Writes constant drivel and is paid incredibly well for it. Recycles well too.

Julie Burchill has always appeared to deliberately go against the grain of public opinion in order to spark reaction and, in turn, further build her reputation as an outspoken, opinionated journalist. I have long believed that she has very little credibility and, furthermore, in my view, her journalistic persona is a total charade - a lucrative charade at that.
